Book excerpt: The performance of circuit simulators running on SISD computers is fundamentally limited by the Von Neumann bottleneck. Multiprocessors do not share this limitation. The task of solving the equations for the many parallel signal paths found in most circuits lends itself readily to concurrent computation. For both of these reasons, parallel processing is a highly promising approach to circuit simulation. This thesis explores several facets of this problem. The logic simulator CONSIM was implemented in the parallel language Multilisp, which contains special constructs for dispatching tasks in parallel. A model for the simulator's behavior was developed using a series of experiments. The analysis explains the effects upon CONSUM's performance of several parameters, including: the number of nodes in the multiprocessor, circuit size and topology, and the algorithms for generating the simulation code and for taking advantage of its inherent parallelism. The final generation of these algorithms exposed and exploited significant parallelism, but did not attain linear speedup. Keywords: computer aided design.

Book excerpt: The potential of parallelism in logic reaches far beyond the exploitation of AND- and OR-parallelism usually found in attempts to parallelize PROLOG. This book discusses parallelism in logic and its exploitation on parallel architectures. A variety of categories of parallelism is discussed with respect to different levels of a logical formula and different ways to evaluate it. As an outcome of these investigations it is shown that modularity allows s tructuring of logic programs and meta-evaluation can be used to c ontrol the evaluation process on a parallel system. This combinat ion yields a consistent programming framework with a wide scope. Finally, the suitability of a specific evaluation mechanism for p arallel architectures is investigated.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Parallel inference machine (PIM) systems are being developed in the Japanese FGCS project. A PIM pilot machine, PIM/i, is now being developed. This paper begins by describing the main characteristics of the target language KL1, which is a concurrent logic programming language. The PIM/i processor architecture which is an amalgamation of RISC, tagged architecture, pipelining and LIW approaches is proposed. This amalgamation is tuned to KL1's main characteristics such as high frequency of branches. By this amalgamation, the PIM/i processor can exploit both temporal and spatial parallelisms from the execution of the target language KL1. A language system and a simulator for this architecture have been implemented and some simulation results are reported in this paper."

Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the 13th International Workshop on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL) held on September 1–3, 2003. The conference was hosted by the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering-Research and Development of Lisbon (INESC-ID) and the Depa- ment of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the IST-Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. The FPL series of conferences was founded in 1991 at Oxford University (UK), and has been held annually since: in Oxford (3 times), Vienna, Prague, Darmstadt,London,Tallinn,Glasgow,Villach,BelfastandMontpellier.Itbrings together academic researchers, industrial experts, users and newcomers in an - formal, welcomingatmospherethatencouragesproductiveexchangeofideasand knowledge between delegates. Exciting advances in ?eld programmable logic show no sign of slowing down. New grounds have been broken in architectures, design techniques, run-time - con?guration, and applications of ?eld programmable devices in several di?erent areas. Many of these innovations are reported in this volume. The size of FPL conferences has grown signi?cantly over the years. FPL in 2002 saw 214 papers submitted, representing an increase of 83% when compared to the year before. The interest and support for FPL in the programmable logic community continued this year with 216 papers submitted. The technical p- gram was assembled from 90 selected regular papers and 56 posters, resulting in this volume of proceedings. The program also included three invited plenary keynote presentations from LSI Logic, Xilinx and Cadence, and three industrial tutorials from Altera, Mentor Graphics and Dafca.

Book excerpt: Single-threaded software applications have ceased to see signi?cant gains in p- formance on a general-purpose CPU, even with further scaling in very large scale integration (VLSI) technology. This is a signi?cant problem for electronic design automation (EDA) applications, since the design complexity of VLSI integrated circuits (ICs) is continuously growing. In this research monograph, we evaluate custom ICs, ?eld-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and graphics processors as platforms for accelerating EDA algorithms, instead of the general-purpose sing- threaded CPU. We study applications which are used in key time-consuming steps of the VLSI design ?ow. Further, these applications also have different degrees of inherent parallelism in them. We study both control-dominated EDA applications and control plus data parallel EDA applications. We accelerate these applications on these different hardware platforms. We also present an automated approach for accelerating certain uniprocessor applications on a graphics processor. This monograph compares custom ICs, FPGAs, and graphics processing units (GPUs) as potential platforms to accelerate EDA algorithms. It also provides details of the programming model used for interfacing with the GPUs.
