Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook aims to provide an overview of regular survey activities, as well as to show how survey results can be used scientifically in the context of business-cycle analysis and forecasting. Examples of various business surveys are described in detail, starting with their objectives, the questions they pose, how they are weighted and extrapolated and the representativeness of their results. A detailed scientific examination of the explanatory value of the data is also made in order to demonstrate their potential usefulness. The Handbook has three parts: firstly, it presents the importance of business surveys for empirical research. Secondly, selected surveys are introduced in detail such as the Ifo Business Survey and the Ifo Investment Survey, and thirdly, a broad spectrum of studies - on the consequence of the survey results - is presented. The significance of the surveys applies equally to business cycle analysis and to forecasting. An array of modern methods of time series analysis and econometric model construction is used in these investigations. This book will be of interest to an audience comprising members of institutions conducting business surveys, scientists using survey results to analyse and forecast business cycles, and students of empirical economic research.

In this context, innovations are considered to play a crucial role in stimulating firms’ performance. This book investigates this general hypothesis by looking at three topics: 1. Does innovation lead to an increase in employment growth? 2. Does innovation boost labour productivity? 3. Does innovation in one period improve innovation performance in subsequent periods?

Book excerpt: Generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation of nonlinear systems has two important advantages over conventional maximum likelihood (ML) estimation: GMM estimation usually requires less restrictive distributional assumptions and remains computationally attractive when ML estimation becomes burdensome or even impossible. This book presents an in-depth treatment of the conditional moment approach to GMM estimation of models frequently encountered in applied microeconometrics. It covers both large sample and small sample properties of conditional moment estimators and provides an application to empirical industrial organization. With its comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of the subject which includes topics like bootstrapping and empirical likelihood techniques, the book addresses scientists, graduate students and professionals in applied econometrics.

What remains is thanking all those people who directly or indirectly contributed to the out come. My thanks go to my family and friends for their encouragement towards the completion of this book. Among the academic profession, I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Dr. Harald Scherf, my academic teacher, first. During the years at Hamburg University I benefitted especially from his profound knowledge of Keynesian theory. His way of examining an argument in an unbiased way helped me a lot to carry out the reseach I wanted to do. His confidence enabled me to finish the work. A part of the book was written while I was a visiting fellow at DELTA, Paris, where I am particularly indebted to Roger Guesnerie. I have benefitted from his encouragement, advice, and gentle criticism during discussions and seminars, especially on the topic of the time structure of economic dynamics. I would like to acknowledge the hospitality and stimulating atmosphere at DELTA. Different versions of the manuscript, or parts of it have been read by Prof. Dr. Manfred Holler, Dr. Jorg Bibow and Dr. Gabriele Kasten. Their comments and suggestions were quite helpul and are gratefully acknowledged. Additionally, I have to thank Prof. Dr. M. Funke and Prof. Dr. V. Timmer mann.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the role of credit markets in the transmission of U.S. macro-financial shocks through the prism of a financial conditions index (FCI) based on a vector autoregression (VAR) methodology. It explores the relative predictive power of market variables compared to credit standards/conditions. The main conclusion is that under plausible specifications credit conditions dominate market variables, highlighting the importance of credit supply. The fact that direct measures of credit conditions anticipate future movements in asset prices has an extremely important implication. Most models of the credit channel see it as an amplifier of underlying changes in financial wealth. The impact of credit conditions on growth compared to other market variables implies that credit supply drives other financial variables rather than responding to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should we be interested in macroeconomic survey expectations? This important book offers an in-depth treatment of this question from a point of view not covered in existing works on time-series econometrics and forecasting. Clements presents the nature of survey data, addresses some of the difficulties posed by the way in which survey expectations are elicited and considers the evaluation of point predictions and probability distributions. He outlines how, from a behavioural perspective, surveys offer insight into how economic agents form their expectations.
