Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langauge and Discrimination provides a unique and authoritative study of the linguistic dimension of racial discrimination. Based upon extensive work carried out over many years by the Industrial Language Training Service in the U.K, this illuminating analysis argues that a real understanding of how language functions as a means of indirect racial discrimination must be founded on an expanded view of language which recognises the inseparability of language, culture and meaning. After initially introducing the subject matter of the book and providing an overview of discrimination and language learning, the authors examine the relationship between theory and practice in four main areas: theories of interaction and their application; ethnographic and linguistic analysis of workplace settings; training in communication for white professionals; and language training for adult bilingual workers and job-seekers. Detailed case studies illustrate how theory can be turned into practice if appropriate information, research, development and training and co-ordinated in an integrated response to issues of multi-ethnic communication, discrimination and social justice.

This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report comments positively on some aspects of the design of the Youth Contract. It builds on the types of interventions which have been shown to have a positive impact: increased Jobcentre Plus (JCP) adviser support; work experience placements; and apprenticeships. It also welcomes the inclusion of a new scheme for 16-17 year-olds, the large majority of whom do not receive support from JCP as they are ineligible for Jobseekers Allowance (JSA). The Committee acknowledges that the Government has sensibly focused wage incentives - the key new element of the Youth Contract - on longer term young unemployed claimants and there is an attempt to achieve sustainable job outcomes by linking wage incentives to the Work Programme payment structure, in which providers are financially incentivised to keep participants in work and off benefits in the longer term. However the Youth Contract on its own it will not be enough to address the current unacceptably high level of youth unemployment. A significant impact can only be made if all the targets are met. In particular, past experience shows that 160,000 wage incentives is a very ambitious target in the current economic climate. And 250,000 additional work experience placements for young people may also be unrealistic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this autobiography, Henry Kissman describes his journey from a boyhood in prewar Austria to life in America, and how he survived the displacements and losses of wartime and built a life devoted to scientific inquiry and public service. As a prosperous Jewish family in the city of Graz, the Kissmans became Nazi targets immediately after the German takeover of Austria in 1938. Henrys parents were both jailed on trumped-up charges, and were stripped of everything they owned, including their successful lumber export business. Henry, age 15 at the time, was able to flee to England; his younger sister followed on a Kindertransport a few months later. After 9 months, his parents were expelled from Austria. Eventually, they also reached England, where they lived and worked throughout the war. In December 1939, Henry was able to emigrate to the U.S. After living with relatives in New York City for a time, he worked at various factory jobs in New Jersey and completed his high school education at night. Through a scholarship he was able to earn a degree at Sterling College in Kansas in 1944. He was then drafted into the Army, where he first served as a combat medic with the 10th Mountain Division in northern Italy, and later as a counter intelligence agent with the U.S. occupation forces in Germany. After discharge from the Army, Henry obtained advanced degrees in organic chemistry with the help of the GI Bill. Eventually, he joined a research group at a pharmaceutical company, where he worked on biologically active substances such as antibiotics and steroids. In 1955, he met Lee Cohn his wife-to-be. They married in January 1956. Beginning in the mid-sixties, Henrys interests changed from laboratory research to developing innovative ways of managing scientific information. He directed such information projects at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and then at the National Library of Medicine until his retirement in 1992.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, it seemed likely that by the end of that decade, if current trends continued, the majority of social researchers would be working under contract to government and other agencies which commissioned policy-relevant investigations. This shift towards contracted and commissioned research threw into heightened relief the importance of greater understanding of the often problematic relationship between researchers on the one hand, and funding agencies and policy-making bodies on the other. This book was directed at both social scientists who were or would in the future be involved in social policy research, and at administrators, planners and policy makers who often had responsibility for funding such research and who were also its potential users. The authors provide accounts of research in a wide variety of settings, conducted on behalf of a diverse range of sponsors, in order to confront, describe and try to understand the tensions which develop between the two sides of the policy research relationship. While there is, of course, no suggestion here that there are tailor-made solutions that can eradicate difficulties, the feeling is expressed that improvements in the research relationship are possible and highly desirable. The primary objective of the book was to provide an impetus for greater understanding and collaboration that could lead to such improvements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume draws together two studies for the Department of Labour, a picture of the dynamism of many such firms emerges. Considerable learning is going on amongst the highly diverse VSME population and the challenge for the state lies in how to support what is already going on: how to spread it and how to avoid over-interference in enterprises whose success has typically been irrespective of, or in spite of external interventions. The Research Programme on Human Resources Development (HRD) at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) aims to inform the development of skills that will meet national, social and economic needs. In addition to producing an HRD Review and an electronically accessible cross-sectoral warehouse, the Research Programme undertakes user-driven research in education and training, focusing on further and higher education and science, technology and education, with a strong emphasis on learning pathways - especially the transition between different levels of education and training, and between education and work.
