Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Will to Choose traces the history of African-American Methodism beginning with their emergence in the fledgling American Methodist movement in the 1760s. Responding to Methodism's anti-slavery stance, African-Americans joined the new movement in large numbers and by the end of the eighteenth century, had made up the largest minority in the Methodist church, filling positions of authority as class leaders, exhorters, and preachers. Through the first half of the nineteenth century, African Americans used the resources of the church in their struggle for liberation from slavery and racism in the secular culture.

This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in order to raise money to purchase his son's freedom, Thomas Jones's autobiography first appeared in the 1850s. This version, published in 1885, includes not only Jones's account of his childhood and young adult life as a slave in North Carolina, but also a long additional section in which Jones describes his experiences as a minister in North Carolina, while still enslaved, and then on the abolitionist lecture circuit in Massachusetts and the Maritime Provinces of Canada after he stowed away on a ship bound for New York in 1849. The narrative's most prominent focus is on Jones's ministry in and around Wilmington, North Carolina, before he escaped. The narrative puts a characteristically postbellum emphasis on shared religious devotion and even fondness between African Americans and whites. Perhaps the most compelling scene, however, is Jones's account of his forcible separation from his first wife and their three children, whom he never saw again. A DOCSOUTH BOOK. This book was released on 1987 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work examines the core period of the African diaspora in the Americas. The author confronts myths surrounding the ethos of this diaspora which were induced by the mercantilist preoccupations of Western Europe. The entire period is portrayed as a battle between two conflicting and opposite strategies - that of the slavocracy and that of the enslaved Africans - culminating in the conversion of the French colony of St Domingue into the revolutionary state of Haiti. The author suggests that Haiti, because of its position in the midst of hostile slave societies, provided inspiration for the antislavery crusade in both its particularistic and its international aspects. The epilogue provides a glimpse into the author's second book on the divergent perceptions in the early evolution of leadership in the African diaspora in the Americas."--Amazon.com viewed Oct. 26, 2022.

This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing published and archival oral histories of formerly enslaved African Americans, Libra R. Hilde explores the meanings of manhood and fatherhood during and after the era of slavery, demonstrating that black men and women articulated a surprisingly broad and consistent vision of paternal duty across more than a century. Complicating the tendency among historians to conflate masculinity within slavery with heroic resistance, Hilde emphasizes that, while some enslaved men openly rebelled, many chose subtle forms of resistance in the context of family and local community. She explains how a significant number of enslaved men served as caretakers to their children and shaped their lives and identities. From the standpoint of enslavers, this was particularly threatening--a man who fed his children built up the master's property, but a man who fed them notions of autonomy put cracks in the edifice of slavery. Fatherhood highlighted the agonizing contradictions of the condition of enslavement, and to be an involved father was to face intractable dilemmas, yet many men tried. By telling the story of the often quietly heroic efforts that enslaved men undertook to be fathers, Hilde reveals how formerly enslaved African Americans evaluated their fathers (including white fathers) and envisioned an honorable manhood.
