Book excerpt: Modern Asian economic history has often been written in terms of Western impact and Asia's response to it. This volume argues that the growth of intra-regional trade, migration, and capital and money flows was a crucial factor that determined the course of East Asian economic development. Twelve chapters are organized around three main themes. First, economic interactions between Japan and China were important in shaping the pattern of regional industrialization. Neither Japan nor China imported technology and organizations, and attempted to "catch up" with the West alone. Japan's industrialization took place, taking advantage of the Chinese merchant networks in Asia, while the Chinese competition was a critical factor in the Japanese technological and organizational "upgrading" in the interwar period. Second, the pattern of China's integration into the international economy was shaped by the growth of intra-Asian trade, migration, and capital flows and remittances. While the Western impact was largely confined to the littoral region of China, intra-Asian trade was more directly connected with China's internal market. Both the fall of the imperial monetary system and the rise of economic nationalism in the early twentieth century reflected increasing contacts with the Asian international economy. Third, a study of intra-Asian trade and migration helps us understand the nature of colonialism and the international climate of imperialism. In spite of the adverse political environment, East Asian merchant and migration networks exploited economic opportunities, taking advantage of colonial institutional arrangements and even political conflicts. They made a contribution to national and regional economic development in the politically more favourable environment after the Second World War, by providing the valuable expertise and entrepreneurship they had accumulated prewar. The character of the international order of Asia, governed by Western powers, especially Britain, but shared also by Japan for most of the period, was "imperialism of free trade", although it eventually collapsed by the late 1930s.

Fragmentation trade, reflected mainly in the trade in parts and components, is expanding more rapidly than the conventional trade in final goods. This is mainly due to the relatively more favorable policy setting for international production, agglomeration benefits arising from the early entry into this new form of specialization, considerable intercountry wage differentials in the region, lower trade and transport costs, and specialization in products exhibiting increasing returns to scale. The economic integration of China has deepened production fragmentation in East Asia, countering fears of crowding out other countries for international specialization. International production fragmentation in East Asia has intensified intraregional trade but has depended heavily on extraregional trade in final goods. While production networks centered on China have contributed significantly to growth in East Asia, they also breed vulnerabilities. They have not automatically led to technology spillovers and have led to an extreme interdependence across East Asian countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a study of the development of Chinas overseas trade during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. It argues that beginning in the 1670s, the formerly profitable trading links that connected China to Japan and Luzon were compromised by political changes in the three regions, and particularly by a civil war in China. The result was a turn towards Southeast Asia that began in 1674 when the Taiwan-based Zheng family, who then dominated maritime trade in East Asia, were forced to find alternative sources of goods to replace Chinese ones that had become inaccessible during the war. After the Qing empires conquest of Taiwan in 1683, its government legalised maritime trade from Chinese ports, creating a surge in the volume of Chinas overseas trade. The markets of Japan and Luzon were not elastic enough to allow all of the new China-based merchants to participate profitably there, so they once again turned towards Southeast Asia. However, unlike the Zheng family in the 1670s, the goal of these new merchants was to find alternative markets to Japan and Luzon for their Chinese goods, and new imports for their home market.This trading network that emerged in the 1680s is examined in depth. Its structure developed as a hub-and-spoke system; China-based merchants concentrated their activity in a few major commercial hubs that were already connected to many smaller centres by the spokes of sub-regional trading networks, and in some cases to the Indian Ocean as well. This gave the China-based merchants indirect access to a larger number of markets than would have been possible otherwise. The major impact of the expansion of Chinese trade in Southeast Asia was a re-orientation of the regions economies towards China, and away from other trading systems, including the Dutch Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnies commercial empire. This network in Southeast Asia was also easily the most important maritime link between China and the global economy until about 1720, when a combination of factors helped prompt the growth of direct trade between China, Europe, and South Asia.

It argues that the commercial expansion of British private traders in the South China economy rested on their engagement in the intra-Asian trade. During the period under study, British private traders penetrated the regional trade of Asia by actively partaking in the flourishing exchange of Asian produce and by manipulating and re-configuring networks of the intra-Asian trade to promote their own interests. These trade networks were in many ways connected to the economy of the South China Sea, facilitating the exchange of a wide range of Asian commodities produced in India, Southeast Asia and China. A great variety of Asian produce had been imported into China in the early 19(century, with a significant portion of the trade undertaken by British country traders; this however was usually neglected due to the overwhelming emphasis of pervious scholarship on cotton and opium trade. This study will reveal the complexity of the intra-Asian trade and the scope and scale of British iii participation in the trade. Furthermore, British trade with China concurrently evolved extensive networks in terms of multiple layers of commercial and financial relationships. That process of network development was on the one hand a response to the dynamics of intra-Asian trade, and on the other hand, was structurally linked with the multilateral framework of international trade.
