Book excerpt: Excerpt from Executive Decision Making in Organizations: Identifying the Key Men and Managing the Process Executive decision making in organizations-the making of decisions which have consequences for subsequent organizational activities-is seldom done by individual members of the organization acting alone. People work together in project teams or task forces, coordinate their efforts with broader purposes of the organization, and exchange stimulation and support with their colleagues. Book excerpt: This book provides a practice-driven, yet rigorous approach to executive management decision-making that performs well even under unpredictable conditions. It explains how executives can employ prescribed engineering design methods to arrive at robust outcomes even when faced with uncontrollable uncertainty. The book presents the paradigm and its main principles in Part I; in Part II it illustrates how to frame a decision situation and how to design the decision so that it will produce its intended behavior. In turn, Part III discusses in detail in situ case studies on executive management decisions. Lastly, Part IV summarizes the book and formulates the key lessons learned.

Book excerpt: Uncertainty in the decision making environment complicates the decision making process because future events may change the effect of a particular decision or series of decisions. This thesis explores the possibility of applying robust engineering design techniques to the decision making process in order to limit the effects of changing circumstances. The intent is to identify solutions that will reduce the variation in the outcome of decisions that are made across many projects by analyzing projects that have been executed at the Dryden Flight Research Center (DFRC) over the past several years. A framework to relate past performance to match the requirements of experiments in a Design of Experiments (DOE) analysis is developed. The approach views factors that are considered in making decisions as controllable elements and factors that unexpectedly affect the outcome of the decisions as noise. The resulting framework is then organized such that the data can be analyzed using the Taguchi approach to DOE, which has been successfully used for analyzing engineering design and manufacturing processes. The analysis approach considers the robustness of the outcome based on the factors used to make the decisions about the various projects that have been conducted at DFRC over the past six years. The decision process performance is analyzed and recommendation are made to improve the performance of the decision making process at DFRC. The analysis indicates that projects providing large increases in technical knowledge were the most influential in reducing the effects from changes in budget and staffing resources that were beyond the control of the decision makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years, there has been growing interest in the process of strategic decision-making among both managers and researchers. Strategic decisions are important for five main reasons: They are large-scale, risky and hard to reverse; they are a bridge between deliberate and emerging strategies; they can be a major source of organizational learning; they play an important part in the development of individual managers and they cut accross functions and academic disciplines. Strategic Decisions summarizes the current state of the art in research on strategic decision-making, with chapters prepared by leading strategy researchers. The editors also present implications for current application and proposed directions for future research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisionmaking literature, which has emphasized the act of solving problems, has long neglected the need to identify problems as precisely as possible. This book examines the nature of problems and decisionmaking and their impact on people who direct an organization. It further focuses on how executives respond to take action at the upper levels of their organizations. The book stresses problem identification, which executives frequently ignore because of their preoccupation with problem solving. It looks at the need to avoid viewing solutions as remedies achieved at predetermined milestones. It examines options other than solutions, such as accommodation and coping, and it looks at the executive environment associated with outcomes along a spectrum ranging from perfection, to progress, to failure. The author argues that executives should abandon the attempt to predetermine objectives over time and adopt a Problem Exchange Ratio (PER) concept. The executive then compares the status of problems over time, creating a ratio. The PER approach considers the problems that solutions themselves trigger. It then allows executives to see where they stand and suggests ways of ameliorating unwanted conditions. The author provides illustrative cases and episodes from both the public and private sectors. Combining theory and practical aspects of executive decisionmaking, this book gives the reader a fuller understanding of the link between decisions and problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines strategic executive decision-making. Using data collected over a seven-year period, the author describes how some 1,500 executives actually do make strategic decisions--and how reality differs substantially from theories about executive decision-making. The author identifies and explains the limitations of much of the current research in strategic decision-making. He then offers a rigorous alternative that reflects what actually happens when executives grapple with strategic decisions involving joint ventures, market entry, diversification, acquisitions, project selection, and long-term goals. Management Review This groundbreaking contribution to business literature examines executive decisionmaking behavior concerning corporate and competitive business strategy. In contrast to previous studies, Strategic Executive Decisions does not offer a prescription for executive decisionmaking. Rather, with the help of extensive data collected over a seven-year period, Stahl describes how some 1500 executives actually do make strategic decisions from the executives' self reports of their own priorities, showing how reality differs substantially from existing theories widely used to explain executive decisionmaking behavior. Required reading for students of management and finance, this book offers an important new methodological alternative to existing theoretical explanations of executive decisionmaking behavior. Based on the observed difference between theory and actual practice, Stahl identifies and explains the limitations of much of the current research in strategic decisionmaking. He goes on to offer a methodologically rigorous alternative that more closely reflects what actually happens when executives grapple with key decisions involving joint ventures, market entry, diversification, acquisitions, project selection, and long-term strategic goals. The bulk of the study is devoted to a detailed analysis of executive decisionmaking in practice. Stahl shows that the only reliable means of determining how strategic decisions are made is unbiased observation of several decisions followed by calculation of what is really important to the decisionmaker. Questionnaires or interviews with the executives, Stahl demonstrates, will often produce misleading information about how a particular decision was made.

Book excerpt: The measure of the executive, Peter Drucker reminds us, is the ability to 'get the right things done'. Usually this involves doing what other people have overlooked, as well as avoiding what is unproductive. He identifies five talents as essential to effectiveness, and these can be learned; in fact, they must be learned just as scales must be mastered by every piano student regardless of his natural gifts. Intelligence, imagination and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that convert these into results. One of the talents is the management of time. Another is choosing what to contribute to the particular organization. A third is knowing where and how to apply your strength to best effect. Fourth is setting up the right priorities. And all of them must be knitted together by effective decision-making. How these can be developed forms the main body of the book. The author ranges widely through the annals of business and government to demonstrate the distinctive skill of the executive. He turns familiar experience upside down to see it in new perspective. The book is full of surprises, with its fresh insights into old and seemingly trite situations.
