It seeks to determine the extent that middle school students feel cared for by teachers and other adults in school and to identify specific student perceived adult caring and non-caring behaviors. Research methods include the creation and administration of a three-question survey administered to school students (grades 7and 8) who attend an upper Midwestern middle school. Survey results are interpreted referencing attachment and self-systems theory. Research findings suggest that teachers must focus on and address both academic and personal needs to create meaningful teacher-student relationships that are perceived by students as caring.

Specific caring behaviors (challenging questions, encouragement and praise, non-verbal support, understanding and friendly, and controlling -- which refer to teacher's expectations for classroom behavior) were evaluated by 101 students (72 girls and 29 boys) in grades 7, 8, and 9 by means of a survey instrument. Research findings support earlier investigations confirming that boys and girls interpret teacher friendliness differently. However, both male and female students reported similar perceptions of their teachers' behaviors with respect to praise, non-verbal support, and controlling. In addition, a strong correlation existed between students' perceptions of teachers' behaviors and student self reports of academic competence"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This qualitative cross-analysis case study examined the unheard voices of middle school students to report their perceptions of caring in their schools. This study utilized focus group interviews to allow thirty-one middle school students from two rural school districts in Southeast Texas the opportunity to discuss attributes of caring they perceive as important for schools. A male student group and a female student group from each school were interviewed to allow a wide range of perceptions from the students. The interviews were analyzed and coded for common themes. The twelve common themes that emerged from the interviews were: characteristics of caring teachers; attributes of a caring principal; trust; respect; motivation; high expectations; the classroom environment; safety; equity; connectedness; voice; and the need for change. Four other isolated themes emerged: friendship; family; support; and relationships between students. The voices of the student participants present an honest and insightful dialogue on the topic of caring in two rural public middle schools.

The purpose of this study is to examine students' sense of belonging in middle schools of Southeast Texas. Conclusions will be presented concerning the gap between the teachers' perceptions of how students feel about themselves in school and what the students actually reported. An analysis of variance revealed that there is a significant difference between the students' sense of belonging and the teachers' perceptions of the students' sense of belonging. Book excerpt: " The test score gap between blacks and whites—on vocabulary, reading, and math tests, as well as on tests that claim to measure scholastic aptitude and intelligence--is large enough to have far-reaching social and economic consequences. In their introduction to this book, Christopher Jencks and Meredith Phillips argue that eliminating the disparity would dramatically reduce economic and educational inequality between blacks and whites. Indeed, they think that closing the gap would do more to promote racial equality than any other strategy now under serious discussion. The book offers a comprehensive look at the factors that contribute to the test score gap and discusses options for substantially reducing it. Although significant attempts have been made over the past three decades to shrink the test score gap, including increased funding for predominantly black schools, desegregation of southern schools, and programs to alleviate poverty, the median black American still scores below 75 percent of American whites on most standardized tests. The book brings together recent evidence on some of the most controversial and puzzling aspects of the test score debate, including the role of test bias, heredity, and family background. It also looks at how and why the gap has changed over the past generation, reviews the educational, psychological, and cultural explanations for the gap, and analyzes its educational and economic consequences. The authors demonstrate that traditional explanations account for only a small part of the black-white test score gap. They argue that this is partly because traditional explanations have put too much emphasis on racial disparities in economic resources, both in homes and in schools, and on demographic factors like family structure. They say that successful theories will put more emphasis on psychological and cultural factors, such as the way black and white parents teach their children to deal with things they do not know or understand, and the way black and white children respond to the same classroom experiences. Finally, they call for large-scale experiments to determine the effects of schools' racial mix, class size, ability grouping, and other policies. In addition to the editors, the contributors include Claude Steele, Ronald Ferguson, William G. Bowen, Philip Cook, and William Julius Wilson. "

Book excerpt: The use of a multi-tiered system of supports framework has been of growing interest in addressing issues related to disruptive behaviors and school suspensions. The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential, explanatory study was to examine middle school teachers’ perceptions (behavioral expectations defined, behavioral expectations taught, and an ongoing system for rewarding behavioral expectations) of their efforts toward implementing Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports with fidelity in two middle schools within an urban school district located in Georgia. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, homogeneity of variance Levene’s test, t-tests, factorial analysis, a one-way analysis of variance, post-hoc tests, frequencies and percentages of suspension, and coding to discover themes from focus group responses. Findings were that teacher participants who were SWPBIS members were assumed were assumed to be more knowledgeable and to know more about policy knew more about policy and procedures than non-SWPBIS members. The results indicated that there was statistically significant difference in years of full-time teaching experience between 6 – 10 years and 11 to 15 years and between 11 to 15 years and more than 20 years. In-school and out-of-school suspensions in M. N. Middle School were less than those in C. M. Middle School to a statistically significant degree, and students received fewer suspensions. Focus group findings showed that the majority of participants held high expectations for student behavior. A review of the results implied that schools with increased disruptive behaviors and suspensions may be motivated to adopt a discipline program. The implications for positive social change are dependent on middle school teachers effectively using SWPBIS with fidelity to improve students’ behavior.
