Book Synopsis Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium by : Linda M. Willem
Download or read book Adapting Spanish Classics for the New Millennium written by Linda M. Willem and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first-century's turn away from fidelity-based adaptations toward more innovative approaches has allowed adapters from Spain, Argentina, and the United States to draw upon Spain's rich body of nineteenth-century classics to address contemporary concerns about gender, sexuality, race, class, disability, celebrity, immigration, identity, social justice, and domestic violence. This book provides a snapshot of visual adaptations in the first two decades of the new millennium, examining how novelistic material from the past has been remediated for today's viewers through film, television, theater, opera, and the graphic novel. Its theoretical approach refines the binary view of adapters as either honoring or opposing their source texts by positing three types of adaptation strategies: salvaging (which preserves old stories by giving them renewed life for modern audiences), utilizing (which draws upon a pre-existing text for an alternative purpose, building upon the story and creating a shift in emphasis without devaluing the source material), and appropriation (which involves a critique of the source text, often with an attempt to dismantle its authority). Special attention is given to how adapters address audiences that are familiar with the source novels, and those that are not. This examination of the vibrant afterlife of classic literature will be of interest to scholars and educators in the fields of adaptation, media, Spanish literature, cultural studies, performance, and the graphic arts.
Book Synopsis A New History of Spanish Literature by : Richard E. Chandler
Download or read book A New History of Spanish Literature written by Richard E. Chandler and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-09-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, A New History of Spanish Literature has been a much-used resource for generations of students. The book has now been completely revised and updated to include extensive discussion of Spanish literature of the past thirty years. Richard E. Chandler and Kessel Schwartz, both longtime students of the literature, write authoritatively about every Spanish literary work of consequence. From the earliest extant writings though the literature of the 1980s, they draw on the latest scholarship. Unlike most literary histories, this one treats each genre fully in its own section, thus making it easy for the reader to follow the development of poetry, the drama, the novel, other prose fiction, and nonfiction prose. Students of the first edition have found this method particularly useful. However, this approach does not preclude study of the literature by period. A full index easily enables the reader to find all references to any individual author or book. Another noteworthy feature of the book, and one omitted from many books of this kind, is the comprehensive attention the authors accord nonfiction prose, including, for example, essays, philosophy, literary criticism, politics, and historiography. Encyclopedic in scope yet concise and eminently readable, the revised edition of A New History of Spanish Literature bids fair to be the standard reference well into the next century.

Download or read book Revival: A History of Spanish Literature (1930) written by Ernest Merimee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present English version, authorized by the publishers and heirs of M. Merimee, is based on the third French Edition. New material of two sorts has been added, however. First, the translator has been allowed to utlize an annotated, interleaved copy of the Precis, 1922, in which the author, and after his death his son Henri, himself a distinguished Hispanist, had set down material for the next revision. This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.

Book Synopsis The Evolution of the Pastoral Novel in Early Modern Spain by : Dominick L. Finello
Download or read book The Evolution of the Pastoral Novel in Early Modern Spain written by Dominick L. Finello and published by Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (ACMRS). This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work recasts the role of the pastoral novel in the intellectual life of the Spanish after the initial impact of the Dianas. Spanish pastoral novels published from 1570 onward, the author claims, are crucial in reconstructing Spain's intellectual history and modernity. Still to be discovered in its entirety, the Spanish pastoral novel was a springboard for literary academies and poetic competitions renewing Castilian poetics for the essential concerns of artistic reception, the conception of innovative generic forms, the power of the writer in a hierarchical society and, ultimately, the novel's bold new sense of literary self-consciousness."--BOOK JACKET.
