Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the English House It would be useless for any one writer to pretend to accomplish this task, though when the way is cleared a social history connecting more closely and summarizing the work of all the contributors will be possible; but at present it is intended to ask each of them to bring his special knowledge to bear upon the explanation of social life, and, in treating his portion of the work, to look at original authorities to see not merely what light they throw on his own branch separately, but how they affect its conception considered in relation to the whole, that is, to the development of the life of the English people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the English House: A Short History of Its Architectural Development From 1100 to 1800 The object aimed at in the following pages is to tell the story of the growth of the English house from its first appearance in a permanent form down to the time of our grandfathers, when it lost much of its interest. Although it is a history of domestic architecture, no deep architectural knowledge is required to understand it; technical terms are avoided as far as may be, and of such as are used a glossary will be found at the end of the volume. The reader unacquainted with architecture will be able to follow the story without difficulty; but he who already knows something of our English buildings will of course be better able to link it up with the general development of English architecture. It is the main stream of progress which is followed, but there are many pleasant backwaters and interesting tributaries which it is impossible to explore in the space at command. Those who are desirous of pursuing the subject more minutely will have no difficulty in finding books dealing with particular periods - Mediaeval, Tudor, Early Renaissance, or Late Renaissance. Hitherto, how ever, the panorama has not been unrolled from end to end in one volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...in Sheffield imply that in ancient times there were streets in that town which could only be traversed by foot passengers. For Waingate is "wagon street," and is the road which leads to the old bridge crossing the river. The name implies that there were other streets through which wagons could not pass. Fargate means2 "public street" or "driving street," and implies the same thing. It is obvious that in old cities the larger streets would lead to the bars or gates, as they do, for instance, to the four gates of York and Chester. Here the plan of the Roman camp, with its via principalis and its four gates, is followed. In the Roman provincial towns there were also streets which could only be traversed by foot passengers. At Pompeii "the narrow streets are practically blocked by single large stones in their centres; the broader streets are crossed by rows, containing from two to five stones." Some twenty-five years before the destruction of Pompeii 1 Thornbury, A Tour Round England, 1870, ii. 36. 2 From O. N. far, means of passage, and gata, a road. Compare O. N. far-vegr, a track, road, Swedish farwccg, via publica; O. E. far, passing, transit. The author here desires to correct a former opinion on this point. Compare the German fahren, to drive. STREETS FOR WAGONS AND OTHERS 99 Claudius forbade travellers to drive in carriages through provincial towns. "Heavy burdens were carried on the backs of horses, mules, or cattle.... In the case of Pompeii horses and carriages were, beyond a doubt, confined to certain streets." Occasionally these streets were closed by iron gratings.1 The smaller streets of English towns were, as we have seen, mere alleys leading into the wider or public streets. In...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Home So many things go to the making of an ideal house, and yet how little do many of us concern our selves with its construction or with the reasons for the particular design of each separate part, the nature of the floors we walk over, the walls which protect us from the cold and heat, and the roofs that afford us shelter from the weather! It is but too true that the education of most of us includes but little study of architecture - the oldest of all the arts - Which throughout successive ages has been the outcome of progressive civilization. It is the one art upon which we are always depen dent, Whether in the secluded village or the crowded town. The lowly country cottage, the stately town house or castle, all in their place must have their suit able architectural form. In our public schools we are taught something of the dwellers in many lands With various climates, and but little of their dwellings. Book excerpt: Harold Godwineson was king of England from January 1066 until his death at Hastings in October of that year. For much of the reign of Edward the Confessor, who was married to Harold’s sister Eadgyth, the Godwine family, led by Earl Godwine, had dominated English politics. In The Rise and Fall of the House of Godwine, Emma Mason tells the turbulent story of a remarkable family which, until Harold’s unexpected defeat, looked far more likely than the dukes of Normandy to provide the long-term rulers of England. But for the Norman Conquest, an Anglo-Saxon England ruled by the Godwine dynasty would have developed very differently from that dominated by the Normans.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Homes and How to Make the Best of Them As a pillar stands firm on the grave of the dead. - Homer. That is a fine image of stability, though in England a pillar is a cold symbol of commemorated success. It does not appeal to the family heart, being an emblem of public virtue, not a token of domesticity. An English poet would choose a word more intimate than pillar, either home or hall, but preferably hall, because the English home of to-day grew from that one room. In other words, the hall threw out offshoot chambers and storeys till at last good house - plans were formed, the evolution lasting over a span of so much time that its periods cannot be counted now. As the hall stands firm on the grave of the dead this, then, is a just figure of England's stability through the ages. In this matter past and present unite as true yoke-fellows with Time and that is why a book on modern houses Should give, as a necessary introduction, a brief account of what they and we owe to bygone generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Homes: A Summer's Sketch-Book Happily, the existing old Halls and Manor-houses - once the homes of so many of those whose names are inseparably associated with this country's annals - are neither few in number nor widely separated. Our purpose has been confined to the selection of a few of the most interesting of these residences as types of the whole class; and while sketching on the spot their ex ternal aspects as they exist 50-day, we have blended with the descriptions those picturesque associations that every where group themselves around old English homes.
