Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Evolution of Infantry Tactics Yet the conditions of this particular struggle have been by no means those I had in my mind at the time of writing, and the defensive form might have Shown itself locally far more successful than it has done, without in the least invalidating my conclusions. I had before me the conditions at present prevailing in Western Europe, in regard to communications, facilities of transport, and the like, and my imaginary armies were actuated by the driving power of modern twentieth-century Continental civilisation, which compels both combatants to seek an early decision at any cost. From these conditions in the aggregate, there must result campaigns of the Napoleonic type, in which rapid manoeuvring decides the manner in which actual collision takes place, and the construction of defensive works after the fashion of the early half of the eighteenth century, of the American Civil War, and the Russo Turkish War is entirely precluded by want of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of Tactics World War It is hoped that this work will have its share in em phasizing the experiences of the war that have been pur chased with so much blood, and which experiences may easily run the danger of being lost in the dissolution of our old, tried army. May these pages call back to mind what our troops have performed, the equal of which can not be found in military history, by heavy work against an enemy so superior in numbers and equipped with all possible auxiliary means. But the heroic achievements of our troops were possible only because all members of the army performed untiring and devoted work in time of peace, in the matter of training the men to faithful per formance of duty, willingness to assume responsibility and audacity. I have but briefly touched on the end of the army; my theme ends upon the battlefield; the awful dissolution process and the failures at home, are beyond the limits of tactics. Therefore, I have purposely avoided touching on the unfortunate struggles in the interior of our country. This book of mine is not for the purpose of accusing, neither is it for the purpose of excusing errors that have been committed. I have merely touched where it was abso lutely necessary. My only endeavor has been to show how our present day tactics had their being and how they, starting from an excellent peace training, adapted them selves to the continually more difficult demands of battle. Though the war could not end with victory on the battle field, that surely was not the fault of the army, nor of its leaders. I shall be very thankful for any corrections and addi tions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bull Run Its Strategy and Tactics From the point of view of the military art one can mark off, in the history of the Civil War, three periods. In the first, we find little but crudeness; in the second, crudeness is flanked by great daring and brilliancy; in the third, brilliancy sobers down to a ripe and masterly exposition of military science; first was Bull Run, then came the Second Manassas, and last of all the terrific struggle from the Wilderness to Appomattox. That is why one is tempted to begin at the beginning, to examine the conditions under which was fought the first conflict of the Civil War. By investigating its crudities, we shall understand better the brilliancy and the maturity that followed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inquiries Into the Tactics of the Future: Developed From Modern Military History The book herewith presented for the first time in English is a development of the work entitled "Two Brigades," and in its present form is, as the author says, what he originally had in mind. In describing the process of evolution by which the book has reached its present form, the author remarks that though the original work was well received in South Germany, France, Austria, and other European countries, it met with a cold reception in North Germany; probably because nobody likes to have his own mistakes pointed out. He intimates that although the Official Account of the Franco-German War is based on all publications and documents that appeared in print previous to its publication, and although it is undoubtedly the best technical account of military operations ever published, it cannot be denied that some thing have either been glossed over or that the compilers were, in some instances, misled by the defective accounts and reports of eye-witnesses. In fact, it is impossible to avoid the impression that the German General Staff, in compiling the Official Account, was careful to let no opportunity slip to increase the prestige of the German arms, and especially to avoid impairing that prestige when unpleasant facts could be passed over with a few words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inquiries Concerning the Tactics of the Future In the following Translation I have desired to place before English readers as accurately as possible a remarkable German Book. The two languages differ, however, so far that some modifications, in the form of sentences, in punctuation, and in phraseology, have been made. Such slight paraphrasing as I here and there employ has been limited not only by the general principle that all translations should be close, but also by the special character of this book - partly historical, partly argumentative or even speculative, and largely technical. In the German text considerable use is made of spaced-out type for emphasis; this method, or the correlative use of italics, I have not adopted. Investigation of questions raised in the treatise may be assisted by the citations in the text and in the Author's footnotes. The volume now offered, being a simple translation, reproduces these, but makes no claim to collating, weighing, or deciding. In a few cases, however, a footnote of my own has been added, enclosed in square brackets [], and marked Translator. The rule stated by the classic Peter Beckford may be, in part, extended to translations. They should be 'as little clogged as possible, ' and be 'easily understood; having less to do with words than things.' I must ask the reader's pardon for some shortcomings in the present instance.
