Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life, or Causes of Change in Animal Forms: A Study in Biology The great question of The Evolution of Life upon the earth, and the causes that have led to the successive changes in animal forms, is one that should be treated from an anatomical and a physiological point of view. Scientists have hitherto spoken of these changes that have taken place, and have concurred in the opinion that the lower forms of life have advanced in the scale of development, and in time have given rise to higher and newer forms. It is believed and generally accepted that the protoplasmic cell was the first vital organism that appeared upon the earth - that, following this in order came the protozoans, the fishes, the reptiles, the marsupials, the mammals, the higher apes, and finally man, but no attempt has ever been made, as far as I know, to explain the physiological causes of these changes in the anatomy of the animal kingdom. It is only a part of the truth to say that a reptile was evolved from a fish, a mammal from a reptile, and man from the higher apes. But this is not enough. The world is advancing to that point when it demands to know [1010 these changes took place, by what physi ological process they occurred, and what was the reason that induced them to change. It is this great point that I have endeavored to explain, - how far, and how well I have succeeded, I leave others to judge. If any thing is left unsaid or unexplained it may serve as a stimulus to future writers to finish the work I have planned out. I have written this work from a physi. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolf Raff is recognized as a pioneer in evolutionary developmental biology. In their 1983 book, Embryos, Genes, and Evolution, Raff and co-author Thomas Kaufman proposed a synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology. In The Shape of Life, Raff analyzes the rise of this new experimental discipline and lays out new research questions, hypotheses, and approaches to guide its development. Raff uses the evolution of animal body plans to exemplify the interplay between developmental mechanisms and evolutionary patterns. Animal body plans emerged half a billion years ago. Evolution within these body plans during this span of time has resulted in the tremendous diversity of living animal forms. Raff argues for an integrated approach to the study of the intertwined roles of development and evolution involving phylogenetic, comparative, and functional biology. This new synthesis will interest not only scientists working in these areas, but also paleontologists, zoologists, morphologists, molecular biologists, and geneticists.

These transitions include the origin of life itself, the first eukaryotic cells, reproduction by sexual means, the appearance of multicellular plants and animals, the emergence of cooperation and of animal societies. This is the first book to discuss all these major transitions and their implications for our understanding of evolution.Clearly written and illustrated with many original diagrams, this book will be welcomed by students and researchers in the fields of evolutionary biology, ecology, and genetics.

Book excerpt: Today many school students are shielded from one of the most important concepts in modern science: evolution. In engaging and conversational style, Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science provides a well-structured framework for understanding and teaching evolution. Written for teachers, parents, and community officials as well as scientists and educators, this book describes how evolution reveals both the great diversity and similarity among the Earth's organisms; it explores how scientists approach the question of evolution; and it illustrates the nature of science as a way of knowing about the natural world. In addition, the book provides answers to frequently asked questions to help readers understand many of the issues and misconceptions about evolution. The book includes sample activities for teaching about evolution and the nature of science. For example, the book includes activities that investigate fossil footprints and population growth that teachers of science can use to introduce principles of evolution. Background information, materials, and step-by-step presentations are provided for each activity. In addition, this volume: Presents the evidence for evolution, including how evolution can be observed today. Explains the nature of science through a variety of examples. Describes how science differs from other human endeavors and why evolution is one of the best avenues for helping students understand this distinction. Answers frequently asked questions about evolution. Teaching About Evolution and the Nature of Science builds on the 1996 National Science Education Standards released by the National Research Councilâ€"and offers detailed guidance on how to evaluate and choose instructional materials that support the standards. Comprehensive and practical, this book brings one of today's educational challenges into focus in a balanced and reasoned discussion. It will be of special interest to teachers of science, school administrators, and interested members of the community.

Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

Book excerpt: Everyone wonders what tomorrow holds, but what will the real future look like? Not decades or even hundreds of years from now, but thousands or millions of years into the future. Will our species change radically? Or will we become builders of the next dominant intelligence on Earth- the machine? These and other seemingly fantastic scenarios are the very possible realities explored in Peter Ward's Future Evolution, a penetrating look at what might come next in the history of the planet. Looking to the past for clues about the future, Ward describes how the main catalyst for evolutionary change has historically been mass extinction. While many scientist direly predict that humanity will eventually create such a situation, Ward argues that one is already well underway--the extinction of large mammals--and that a new Age of Humanity is coming that will radically revise the diversity of life on Earth. Finally, Ward examines the question of human extinction and reaches the startling conclusion that the likeliest scenario is not our imminent demise but long term survival--perhaps reaching as far as the death of the Sun! Full of Alexis Rockman's breathtaking color images of what animals, plants and other organisms might look like thousands and millions of years from now, Future Evolution takes readers on an incredible journey through time from the deep past into the far future.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...understand just what part each one of the various developmental factors or causes plays, there is necessary a most thorough analytical study of development, and an attempt o determine in measurable or quantitative degree just what specific effects each factor produces. Obviously the most reliable way to effect this analysis and this determination of the specific cause and effect relations is to appeal to experiment. But biology has always been looked on as, and until recently has actually been, almost wholly a science of observation. It is now becoming, in part at least, a science of experiment as chemistry and physics have long been (these are now becoming more and more sciences of calculation, that is, exact sciences like mathematics), and this change and advance--for it is truly an advance when a science formerly relying for its facts on observation begins to base its foundations on the results of experiment--is due primarily to the modern interest and work in the problem of developmental causes. The search for a rational, causomechanical explanation of the complex and at first sight wholly baffling phenomena of development has been a great stimulus to the bold questioning of many other vital phenomena heretofore looked on as to be explained only by the assumption of a mystic vital force or capacity wholly beyond and foreign to the physicochemical world of matter and force. Mechanism versus vitalism is one of the greatest present-day battles in biology, and nowhere is the struggle keener or are the mechanists more bold in their position than in the particular field of the processes and factors of development. To the mechanists the play of familiar physicochemical forces through the complex and unique structure of germ plasm and living...
