Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syntagma of the Evidences of the Christian Religion Men and Brethren: You are hereby invited to attend the Discussions of the Evidences of the Christian Religion, which are held every Tuesday evening, in the Society's Areopagus, 86 Cannon street, City, to which all respectable persons, upon observance of the necessary regulations, are admissible; and where all competent persons, upon a previous notification of their intentions, are allowed to deliver their sentiments upon the topic of discussion. This Society aims only to promote the love of Truth, the practice of Virtue, and the influence of Universal Benevolence, as opposed to foolish and contradictory systems of religious faith - derived from the ignorance of barbarous ages, and craftily imposed upon the many, for the aggrandisement of the power and influence of a few, who, aware of the suspicious origination of their pretended Divine Revelation, have shown themselves afraid and ashamed to maintain the same, where they might be answered by learned and able men, and might have their accuracy established, or their errors corrected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion, Its Meanings and Proof This book forms the sequel to my former work, entitled The Fatherhood of God in Christian Truth and Life. It is an attempt to explain and verify the Christian religion by means of the fatherly-filial relationship, the supremacy and meaning of which for Christian consciousness and theology, was investigated in the former work. The book has been prepared under very great difficulties, owing to the ceaseless pressure of public engagements. It is to be feared that it has suffered thereby. Moreover, its scope is so extensive that it has been impossible to fill in many details, while some important subjects connected with the exposition and proof of Christianity have been but lightly touched upon or in some cases omitted altogether. The purpose of the book is rather to establish a general point of view than to treat the subject with the exhaustiveness of a Compendium of Christian Evidences. The popular discussion of what is commonly called the New Theology did not take place till this book was practically completed. It has, therefore, been impossible, even if it had been otherwise desirable, to enter into the current controversy on the subject. It will be found, however, that many of the subjects of the controversy are dealt with, and that a serious attempt is made to give full effect to the truth of the immanence, while steadfastly maintaining the transcendence, of God. I am, of course, greatly indebted to many sources in working out the view of Christianity and of its relation to Reality, which is outlined in these pages. Christian Evidences We do not mean, of course, to assert that it is improper to develop one or another line of evidence to the exclusion, for the time, of other lines. This is often most desirable. We think, however, it is un fortunate to attempt to discredit any of the well established forms of the argument for Christianity merely because some particular form happens for the moment to be unpopular. In the end more is lost than is gained by the procedure. The attempt is made in the succeeding pages to state the argument for Christian belief from the four leading standpoints. The aim has been to put the case as clearly and with as little of the formal and technical in language and style as the nature of the subject would admit. But they sought more than a passive and unexamining belief. They knew in whom they believed; they felt the power of every truth which they professed. And the same cause, 1n active operation, would be productive of the same effects. The same strong and unwavering faith established on reason and conscious conviction, would be creative of the same peace and joy in believing, and of all their accompanying fruits. And as a mean of destroying the distinction, wherever it exists, between the profession and the reality of faith, it is ever the prescribed duty of all, who profess to believe in the gospel, to search and to try, to prove all things, and hold fast to that which is good and to be able to give an answer to every one that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Christian Evidence The original work, which formed the basis of this handbook, was only a compend. The first edition, though quite large, was speedily exhausted. Since it has been out of print, there have been so many calls for it, sometimes in large quantities, that both the publisher and the author feel justified in issuing the present edition. It is cause for hopefulness and for gratitude to God that, even in these days of many departures from the faith, books of an evangelical order are in demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Demonstration of the Truth of the Christian ReligionAbundant as are the materials for the construction of such an irrefragable argument, yet additional evidence is still ac cumulating. While the progress of physical science dis closes the works of the God of nature, it illustrates also the truth of his word. The very objections of ignorance become the arguments of knowledge. And, as superstition is shaken, true religion is confirmed. And the'labours of all the ene mies of the truth, in seeking to confound Christianity with its corruptions, or to subvert them together, is only the clear ing away of the rubbish which has too long obscured the rock on which the church of Christ is built; and that man must know but little of the spirit of the times, and be ill-instructed unto the kingdom of Heaven, who, in seeking to illustrate the truth of the gospel, could not readily bring forth out of his treasure things new as well as old.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The author of this vigorous treatise is an estimable minister of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He bears the honored name of Beverly Waugh, late Bishop in the M. E. Church - a warm and life-long friend of the Bond connection, in Maryland, to which the author belongs. It may well be supposed, therefore, that he was steeped in Methodism from his birth; and if Methodism is "Christianity in earnest," as Dr. Chalmers says, an earnest defense of Christianity may be expected in this work. The reader will not be disappointed. The conception of the book originated in the author's careful perusal and study of the best works on the Evidences of Christianity - Paley, of course, being prominent. Encouraged by judicious friends, he prosecuted his investigations, and committed his views to writing, until they were developed into a well-proportioned treatise of sufficient size, and, we will add, of due importance, to justify its publication. We have had the pleasure and profit of its perusal as it has been passing through the press, and we hesitate not to say it is an excellent resume of the Evidences of Christianity, as presented by Paley, Row, and other apologists, embodying much fresh original matter adapted to the "perilous times" in which we live.
