Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences Against Christianity, Vol. 1 of 2 Though I cannot but rejoice at times in the strength of my cause, and exult in the confidence of its victory though the very difficulty Of the task which I have undertaken and the might Of the enemies whom I Oppose, are such as to give a keen pleasure, to one who can appreciate the rap ture of the strife, yet there are other times, when I am sad and sorry that such a labor should have appeared to me in the guise Of a duty. The feelings would have to be unusually blunt in a man who could feel unalloyed pleasure in endeavoring to overthrow a system which is woven in with the heart-strings of many of those who are dearest to him To Oppose the institution which your fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evidences of Christianity Evidences in the wider sense. - And so the student of Christian Evidences is justified in including within the scope of his inquiry those elementary ideas of God and religion which, though not distinctive of Christianity, are its groundwork. In taking this wider sweep he is enabled to meet the arguments of different classes of assailants. There are those who profess belief in a God while denying in whole or in part the truth of the Christian revelation. There are also Opponents with whom he seems to have less in common. Besides the Atheist, who utterly denies the existence of a God, there is the Agnostic, who grudgingly admits the possibility of a God, but asserts that if He does exist He cannot possibly be known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences of Christianity The author would have composed and delivered the whole of the designed course at once, if his health and other duties had allowed. But finding himself quite exhausted with the effort so far as it has now been carried, and being unwilling to be taken off for a longer time together, from his other pastoral duties, he stopped when he had completed the arguments for the authenticity, credibility, divine authority, and inspiration of the scriptures; reserving the consideration of the internal evidences for another occasion. The uncertainty of that period, and in deed of every thing future, has led him to think that he should be better consulting his duty to his flock by submitting to them the present volume, than by waiting till the second was ready for delivery. Christian Evidences We do not mean, of course, to assert that it is improper to develop one or another line of evidence to the exclusion, for the time, of other lines. This is often most desirable. We think, however, it is un fortunate to attempt to discredit any of the well established forms of the argument for Christianity merely because some particular form happens for the moment to be unpopular. In the end more is lost than is gained by the procedure. The attempt is made in the succeeding pages to state the argument for Christian belief from the four leading standpoints. The aim has been to put the case as clearly and with as little of the formal and technical in language and style as the nature of the subject would admit. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Lee Strobel trains his investigative sights on the hot-button question: is it really credible to believe God intervenes supernaturally in people's lives today? This provocative book starts with an unlikely interview in which America's foremost skeptic builds a seemingly persuasive case against the miraculous. But then Strobel travels the country to quiz scholars to see whether they can offer solid answers to atheist objections. Along the way, he encounters astounding accounts of healings and other phenomena that simply cannot be explained away by naturalistic causes. The book features the results of exclusive new scientific polling that shows miracle accounts are much more common than people think. What's more, Strobel delves into the most controversial question of all: what about miracles that don't happen? If God can intervene in the world, why doesn't he do it more often to relieve suffering? Many American Christians are embarrassed by the supernatural, not wanting to look odd or extreme to their neighbors. Yet, The Case for Miracles shows not only that the miraculous is possible, but that God still does intervene in our world in awe-inspiring ways. Here’s a unique book that examines all sides of this issue and comes away with a passionate defense for God's divine action in lives today. Also available: The Case for Miracles Spanish edition, kids' edition, and student edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Positive Evidences of Christianity The author of this vigorous treatise is an estimable minister of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He bears the honored name of Beverly Waugh, late Bishop in the M. E. Church - a warm and life-long friend of the Bond connection, in Maryland, to which the author belongs. It may well be supposed, therefore, that he was steeped in Methodism from his birth; and if Methodism is "Christianity in earnest," as Dr. Chalmers says, an earnest defense of Christianity may be expected in this work. The reader will not be disappointed. The conception of the book originated in the author's careful perusal and study of the best works on the Evidences of Christianity - Paley, of course, being prominent. Encouraged by judicious friends, he prosecuted his investigations, and committed his views to writing, until they were developed into a well-proportioned treatise of sufficient size, and, we will add, of due importance, to justify its publication. We have had the pleasure and profit of its perusal as it has been passing through the press, and we hesitate not to say it is an excellent resume of the Evidences of Christianity, as presented by Paley, Row, and other apologists, embodying much fresh original matter adapted to the "perilous times" in which we live. Book excerpt: The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence of Christianity: Derived From Its Nature and Reception The idea, which the following pages are designed to illustrate, is briefly this: that a religion like the Christian could never have existed, unless it had been introduced by divine authority. It could not have been invented: it would not have been received. This line of argument has at least one advantage; at the same time that it proves, if well founded, that the religion is true, it shows also what the religion is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apologetics or a Treatise on Christian Evidences Some things are true in all religions. Each system seems to have, in a sense, its historical basis. Each sets up its claim of supernatural origin. But, one by one, as they are subjected to a critical analysis, and the severe test of truth is faithfully applied, their claims, which are fundamental, are found to consist in myth, not in fact. Christianity, which is founded on the Old and the New Testaments, is an exception to the above statement. The more severe, the broader, and the more scientific the tests which have been applied to Christianity, the more invulnerable has it proved to such attacks. Recognizing the facts set up in the Holy Scriptures, first, that they are a revelation from God, setting forth both the religious and political history of Israel which, under the guidance of God, was in due time to bring forth a Saviour that would redeem the world from sin and death; second, that in the person of Jesus Christ, the world's Saviour and Redeemer has actually come, and that the statements made in the Old and the New Testaments concerning the development of Israel and the records respecting Jesus Christ are historically true - these are some of the claims set forth in the Christian system -the Christian apologist ought to see that his defense of Christianity must be more than simply negative. As a satisfactory working basis for religious hope and activity he must prove the facts of Christianity beyond a reasonable doubt. To do this has been the intent of the author.
