Witness to the rapid urbanization of the 20th century, Lefebvre conceptualized public space as socially produced--a mirror image of capitalist ideology--and levied a humanitarian slogan in response: "the right to the city," a notion that has energized the thought of leading American geographers such as David Harvey and Edward Soja. Lefebvre also worked closely with the Situationist International, collaborating with them on urban experiments in the '50s and '60s. Arguably his greatest legacy, however, is his theory of "the everyday"--a topic he returned to throughout his life, culminating in his three-volume magnum opus, The Critique of Everyday Life. Like public space, Lefebvre argued, the everyday is a social structure concurrent with modernity: "the everyday is a product, the most general of products in an era where production engenders consumption." In this edition of Lefebvre's classic but largely unavailable text, New York-based artist Julie Mehretu responds to Lefebvre's 1987 essay, reflecting upon its implications during a time when conceptions of "the everyday" are both heightened and obscured. The aim of this study is to reassess the women refugee writers' narrative strategies and integrate their work within feminist literary studies. She also shows their innovative ways of picturing the gendered tension between the experiences of exile and exile as a modernist metaphor as well as their search for ways to refute the Nationalist Socialist rewriting of history. It offers, firstly, a historical perspective, demonstrating the importance of mainstream and dissident Surrealism; the indispensable contribution, over a 20-year period (1960-80), of four major figures: Henri Lefebvre, Roland Barthes, Michel de Certeau, and Georges Perec; and the recent proliferation of works that investigate everyday experience. Secondly, it establishes the framework of philosophical ideas on which discourses on the everyday depend, but which they characteristically subvert. Thirdly, it comprises searching analyses of works in a variety of genres, including fiction, the essay, poetry, theatre, film, photography, and the visual arts, consistently stressing how explorations of the everyday tend to question and combine genres in richly creative ways. By demonstrating the enduring contribution of Perec and others, and exploring the Surrealist inheritance, the book proposes a genealogy for the remarkable upsurge of interest in the everyday since the 1980s. A second main objective is to raise questions about the dimension of experience addressed by artists and thinkers when they invoke the quotidien or related concepts. Military occupation increasingly informs the politics of both democracies and dictatorships, capitalist and formerly socialist regimes, raising questions about its relationship to sovereignty and the nation-state form. Israel and India are two of the world's most powerful postwar democracies yet have long-standing military occupations. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey have passed through periods of military dictatorship, but democracy has yielded little for their ethnic minorities who have been incorporated into the electoral process. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh (like India, Pakistan, and Turkey) have felt the imprint of socialism; declarations of peace after long periods of conflict in these countries have not improved the conditions of their minority or indigenous peoples but rather have resulted in "violent peace" and remilitarization. Indeed, the existence of standing troops and ongoing state violence against peoples struggling for self-determination in these regions suggests the expanding and everyday nature of military occupation.
