Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Everglades of Florida My first public utterance concerning the Everglades of Florida was an address delivered in Miami, Fla., Feb. 26, 1908. At this meeting I gave it as my opinion the Ever glades would be drained, but the land would not be perma uently settled without the introduction and growth of some staple crop of a high commercial value, and suggested rice and sugar cane as the crops that would most likely be found best suited to the climate and soil. After having completed my investigation for the U. S. Department of Agriculture, in a report prepared by me June 25, 1909, I used the following language: It is believed by agriculturists and chemists who have studied the situation, and from evidence afforded by the demonstrations that have been made, that sugar cane can be grown successfully on these muck lands. The writer saw in numerous places, visited many patches of sugar cane, the stalks as large and heavy as those grown in Louisiana and thick enough on the ground to yield a big tonnage per acre. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across the Everglades: A Canoe Journey of Exploration If the reader has the patience and fortitude to follow me in my wanderings, he will perhaps find many preconceived and erroneous impressions of the character if Everglades dissipated. I have elsewhere stated the purpose of my winters work. It remains, then, only for me to thank those who have kindly aided me. I beg here to express my great indebtedness to my friend, Mr. H. M. Flagler, for the courtesies of his railroad and the special interest shown by him in the successful issue of my undertaking. I have also to thank Mr. J. I. Ingraham for loaning me the complete and interesting notes made by him during his own expedition. The vocabulary in this volume was greatly enriched by the use of that charming little book, "The Seminoles of Florida," by Minnie Moore Willson, enabling me to add much to my own stock of words. Ln a vast, shallow sheet this lazy river idles through tall grasses and shadowy forests, easing over alligator holes and under bird rookeries, finally mingling with the salty waters of Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico in the mangrove swamps. From source to sea, all across the shallow breadth of this watery landscape, life abounds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Sports in the South: Or, of the Camp-Fires of the Everglades Some of the Sketches contained in this volume Were con tributed by the Author to the journal Ihe Spirit of the Times; some have since been floating about in other papers; While others were also published in New York in 1860, under the title of Wild Sports in the South. So much it seems necessary to say, lest the reader should regard these twice-told tales as lack ing in originality. N othing more is claimed for this volume than that it contains reminiscences of an actual hunt, and some adventures in the penin sula of Florida that happened many years ago, and counterparts of tales, some of them then told and since remembered, some of them fancied, such as frontier hunters tell When assembled at night around their camp-fires. The Author does not ask that each story shall be regarded as having occurred literally as written; but he believes the spirit of the tales, the portraits of the frontier characters, the description of natural scenery, and the fragments of Indian history, to be correct. Much of the Indian history may be found in The Exiles of Florida, a historical work written by J oshua R. Gidding, and published in 1858. The basis of the Florida Pocahontas is recorded in the history of Garoilasso de la Vega, one of the early Spanish chroniclers. Hitherto this most desirable location has made itself known through its own merits only, no efforts having yet been made to bring it into general notice; consequently many tourists have passed it by altogether. You may, at first sight, be a little disappointed. The general aspect of things is, perhaps, primitive, and somewhat strange to the Northern eye. Yet this is not unpleasing; and the place has a wonderful capacity for growing upon one's affections. A single Winter passed there con firms your love for it. You always want to go back to it again. You realize a moral as well as a physical benefit from this communion with the primitive world. The author has endeavored, in this pamphlet, to state simple facts. If anything here seems too highly colored, it should be attributed wholly to the writer's affection for the place: or as a sort of mental thank-offer ing for restoration to health. There was about him an air of anxious expectancy, and from time to time he rose from his crouching position and with hand to ear listened intently. I sort 0' wonder if they'll all fail me, he muttered, as he removed the frying-pan from the coals but set it near enough to keep the contents hot. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of the Everglades and Their Neighbors, the Seminole Indians Would you like a glimpse into the primeval forest of America? Then let us turn the slide and look upon a picture in the heart of Amer ica's Least Known Wilderness - the great Everglades of Florida. We turn the clock of time back twenty - five years, only a span in the history of a community or a Nation. We see upon this flame lit screen, massive live oaks, festooned with the swinging, wind-tossed moss, which, with the tall cabbage palms, cocoanuts, magnolias and India rubber and mangrove trees, make a framework or back ground; swaying, dangling, green and yellow and red trimmed vines, rare and brilliant orchids. Wild coffee plants, the myrtle and the bay, with the wild lemon and the custard apple, make the scene a veritable fairyland of jungle beauty, a land of mystery that will ever lend a thrill to the name of Florida. Butterfly colonies float here and there with feather-like lightness, as they rise from their island homes, making the scene a maze of yellow and green a mosaic of wondrous beauty like a picture under glass.
