Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of high-temperature materials in current and future applications, including silicone materials for handling hot foods and metal alloys for developing high-speed aircraft and spacecraft systems, has generated a growing interest in high-temperature technologies. High Temperature Materials and Mechanisms explores a broad range of issues related to high-temperature materials and mechanisms that operate in harsh conditions. While some applications involve the use of materials at high temperatures, others require materials processed at high temperatures for use at room temperature. High-temperature materials must also be resistant to related causes of damage, such as oxidation and corrosion, which are accelerated with increased temperatures. This book examines high-temperature materials and mechanisms from many angles. It covers the topics of processes, materials characterization methods, and the nondestructive evaluation and health monitoring of high-temperature materials and structures. It describes the application of high temperature materials to actuators and sensors, sensor design challenges, as well as various high temperature materials and mechanisms applications and challenges. Utilizing the knowledge of experts in the field, the book considers the multidisciplinary nature of high temperature materials and mechanisms, and covers technology related to several areas including energy, space, aerospace, electronics, and metallurgy. Supplies extensive references at the end of each chapter to enhance further study Addresses related science and engineering disciplines Includes information on drills, actuators, sensors and more A comprehensive resource of information consolidated in one book, this text greatly benefits students in materials science, aerospace and mechanical engineering, and physics. It is also an ideal resource for professionals in the industry.

Book excerpt: This report describes the evaluation of candidate materials systems for high temperature service and is presented in two separate parts: the first pertains to the development of laboratory tests for the evaluation of refractory alloy coatings; the second, to the arc-plasma-jet evaluation of ablative materials, impregnated porous ceramics, refractory composites, and sprayed ceramic coatings. Part I describes analytical and experimental approaches leading to the development of an orderly series of tests designed to characterize the oxidation behavior of refractory alloy coatings and to determine their influence upon the physical and mechanical properties of the base metal. Part II describes the screening of 78 different high temperature materials with an arc-plasma-jet testing facility. The systems evaluated fell into four general categories: ablative materials, impregnated porous ceramics, refractory composites, or sprayed ceramic coatings. Testing procedures were adjusted for each class of materials to emphasize particular performance characteristics. (Author).

Book excerpt: Work under the subject contract is divided into two general areas: one covering the evaluation of refractory alloy coatings; the other the evaluation of high temperature materials systems. The coatings evaluation program is directed towards the development of an orderly series of standardized test procedures to provide a common basis for comparison of the characteristics of various refractory alloy coating systems and their applicability to certain service requirements. The program is intended to evaluate (1) the ability of the coatings to provide reliable oxidation protection; and (2) the extent to which the coating and/or application process may influence the properties of the substrate material. The evaluation of high temperature materials is intended to provide data pertaining to the performance of materials in unusual thermal and corrosive environments.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents approaches to characterize inelastic behavior of materials and structures at high temperature. Starting from experimental observations, it discusses basic features of inelastic phenomena including creep, plasticity, relaxation, low cycle and thermal fatigue. The authors formulate constitutive equations to describe the inelastic response for the given states of stress and microstructure. They introduce evolution equations to capture hardening, recovery, softening, ageing and damage processes. Principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics are presented to provide a framework for the modeling materials behavior with the aim of structural analysis of high-temperature engineering components.

Book excerpt: High Temperature Coatings, Second Edition, demonstrates how to counteract the thermal effects of rapid corrosion and degradation of exposed materials and equipment that can occur under high operating temperatures. This is the first true practical guide on the use of thermally protective coatings for high-temperature applications, including the latest developments in materials used for protective coatings. It covers the make-up and behavior of such materials under thermal stress and the methods used for applying them to specific types of substrates, as well as invaluable advice on inspection and repair of existing thermal coatings. With his long experience in the aerospace gas turbine industry, the author has compiled the very latest in coating materials and coating technologies, as well as hard-to-find guidance on maintaining and repairing thermal coatings, including appropriate inspection protocols. The book is supplemented with the latest reference information and additional support to help readers find more application- and industry-type coatings specifications and uses. Offers an overview of the underlying fundamental concepts of thermally-protective coatings, including thermodynamics, energy kinetics, crystallography and equilibrium phases Covers essential chemistry and physics of underlying substrates, including steels, nickel-iron alloys, nickel-cobalt alloys and titanium alloys Provides detailed guidance on a wide variety of coating types, including those used against high temperature corrosion and oxidative degradation and thermal barrier coatings

Book excerpt: Section I describes the evaluation of oxidation-resistant coatings for TZM molybdenum (Mo-0.5Ti-0.07Zr-0.03C) and B66 columbium (Cb-5V-5Mo-1Zr). Eight coatings for TZM were evaluated with primary emphasis upon four of these. Six coatings for B66 were evaluated with the bulk of this effort concentrated upon two coating systems. Test results covering complete metallographic analysis, tensile and bend tests, cyclic oxidation tests in the temperature range of 1600 to 3000F, and the results of creep-rupture tests complete with a statistical analysis are presented. Section II describes the screening tests of 32 different high-temperature materials, including ablative materials, impregnated porous ceramics, and refractory composites, in an arc-plasma testing facility. Included are screening data for several refractory materials developed from tests of 1-inch diameter discs. This disc test is described in detail and its relative merits as compared to more conventional flat panel tests are discussed. Materials performance data are presented as a tabulation of test conditions and their effects upon specimen behavior. (Author).

Book excerpt: Conventional materials, such as nickel based alloys, will not be able to match the required performance specifications for the future generation of high temperature materials. This book reviews the characteristics and potential of a wide range of candidate superalloy replacements, such as ceramics, intermetallics, and their composites. Particular attention is devoted to the problems of processing and design with these materials.
