Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethnology of the Salinan Indians As data on many important points was entirely missing, due to the almost complete loss of aboriginal culture among the present Indians of the northern missions, material has been incorporated from various other sources. Through the courtesy of the Bureau of American Ethnology access has been had to certain ethnological notes collected by Dr. Henshaw in 1884 from informants now deceased, and other items of importance have been gleaned from the writings of various travellers and visitors to the missions. Notable among the latter is Alexander S. Taylor, who visited the missions in 1856, sent many of his manuscripts and other material of the mission period to wash lugton, and recounted his observations in The California Farmer in 1860. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History, Vol. 1: Part IV.; Ethnology of the Gros Ventre The following information on the Gros Ventre was collected in the winter and early spring Of 1901, at the Fort Belknap Reservation in northern Mon tana, as part of the Mrs. Morris K. Jesup Expedition. Very few of the statements made, unless such is obviously the case, are based on observation. In general, where nothing is said to the contrary, they are founded on state ments made by the Indians. The introductory explanations that have been made in regard to the Arapaho1 apply also to the following material. The alphabet used for rendering Gros Ventre words is the same as that employed for Arapaho. Additional sounds are 6 and ii, which are open, and k', a palatal k. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Gazetteer of Ethnology In reading works on Philology, Sociology and Anthropology we frequently find names of races and peoples mentioned without any hint as to their locality. The inconvenience of this is heightened by the fact that there appear to be no works specially dealing with this subject, by reference to which the deficiency could be remedied. Thinking it would be very desirable, if such a defect can be removed even in the slightest degree, I began to compile this book in the spring of 1902, but owing to the lack of suitable reference books in this country, the work has progressed more slowly than I anticipated and even in its present state does not afford me complete satisfaction. Nevertheless, having collected eight thousand tribe-names of all countries, I decided to publish the present book. There being no dictionaries of this kind in Europe and America, the two languages, English and Japanese were especially used. The present volume being compiled with the above object, the distributions of races and peoples in past and present times are mentioned, and at the same time, I have endeavoured to add as many synonyms of them as possible, and to explain the derivation and meaning of the terms, while their ethnical relations and characters are omitted.
