Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eternal Priesthood "Forasmuch as no act can be more excellent than the consecration of the Body of Christ, there can be no order after (i.e. higher than) the priesthood." "No act is greater than the consecration of the Body of Christ." "The Bishop and the priest are equal in respect to the consecration of the Holy Eucharist." S. John Chrysostom founds the sanctity of the priesthood, which, in Bishop and priest, is all one, upon the twofold jurisdiction over the natural and the mystical Body of Christ - that is, upon the power of consecration and upon the power of absolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name of this series is God's Administration in the History of Redemption (Eph 1:9). God's administration in the history of redemption is His management of the entire history, including the promising of the Messiah, giving prophecies of every detail of His coming, His birth and ministry on earth, and the atoning work on the cross. God interceded in mankind's history through His providence in every period to make sure His will of salvation of fallen mankind through Jesus Christ is fulfilled. This series follows that history and traces back to see what God has done to bring us to salvation. The history in which God intervenes and eventually comes down to save His people is the history of redemption. Because He worked through people in their history, His works can be traced back through genealogies, which contain names, events, and years. Together, they form a history and become important evidence for the reality of God's work. The Bible actually provides all the evidence that its stories are not mere myths or legendary stories. The History of Redemption Series puts together the clues and evidence in the sequence of the redemptive historical flow, so the readers can see the drama and flow of God's work of salvation, which leads all the way to this current day. The genealogies of the godly seed continue in the book of Genesis through the fathers of faith who were able to overcome and set themselves apart from sins and greed in this world. The genealogies in Genesis lead to introduce Abraham, an essential figure in God's administration to bring salvation for the entire world. The work of redemption takes on a new phase through God's calling of Abraham and is fulfilled through the Messiah who comes as the son of Abraham. This magnificent story of godly lineage is what Moses refers to as the "days of old." They are the days that contain God's redeeming work which continues to fulfill His covenant in our lives today.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1884 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIX. THE PRIEST'S LIFE. The Fourth Provincial Council has also traced out in its twelfth decree what a priest's life ought to be in the following words: 1. "' They who are not holy ought not to lay hands on holy things.'1 All the faithful of Christ, as the Apostle testifies, are called to be Saints.2 But priests ought to ascend to the perfection of sanctity. 'For he who, by the necessity of his position, is compelled to teach the highest things, by the same necessity is bound to show them forth in himself." The warning is altogether fearful: 'No man ought rashly to offer himself to others as a guide in the divine light who, in all hi3 state and habit, is not most like to God.'4 'For they who are appointed to divine ministries attain to a royal dignity, and ought to be perfect in virtue.'5 For so we are taught by the Catholic Church in its solemn ritual, and in the very act of conferring the priesthood. As God commanded Moses 'to choose out seventy men from the whole people to be his helpers, to whom the Holy Ghost should distribute His gifts, ' so the Lord Jesus chose out presbyters of the second order to help the Apostles--that is, the Catholic Bishops--that He might teach His Church, both by word and deed, that the ministers of His Church ought to be perfect in faith and in works-- that is, founded in the virtue of the twofold love of God and our neighbour.' For priests are chosen by God, that, being commended by heavenly wisdom, pure morals, and a lasting observance of justice, and 'keeping the ten commandments of the law they may be, by the Sevenfold Spirit, upright and mature in knowledge and in action; and that, preserving in their morals the integrity of a chaste and holy life, the pattern of all justice may shine...
Book Synopsis Theology of the Priesthood by : Jean Galot
Download or read book Theology of the Priesthood written by Jean Galot and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of Vatican II, in 1965, more active involvement of the laity has led many people to wonder about the priestಙs place in the Church. In this masterful work, theologian Jean Galot, S.J., clarifies the nature of the priesthood. He explains how the Jewish priesthood, the perfect priestly ministry of Jesus, and the role of the Twelve help us understand the ministerial priesthood. He considers how the ಜpriesthood of the faithfulಝ and the ministerial priesthood relate to each other, and how the latter is, by Godಙs design, necessary for the former. Theology of the Priesthood carefully examines the priestಙs role as minister of sacrifice and the sacraments, prophet of the Word, and leader of the Church. These and other aspects are summed up, according to Galot, in the priestಙs ministry as shepherd. This ministery is itself a sharing in Jesusಙ role as Shepherd: ಜThe priest does not draw the inspiration for his pastoral zeal from his own feelings, from his own personal resolve to create a better worldಝ, Fr. Galot writes. ಜHe is shepherd on the strength of Godಙs pastoral intention and represents specifically Christ the shepherd. Consequently, he is called upon to fulfill his pastoral mission not according to ideas of his own and his own personal ambitions, but in keeping with Godಙs own dispensation and the design of salvation devised by the Father and carried out by Christ. Like Jesus himself, the priest is at the service of the Father.ಝ The book also explores the spiritual life of priests, including the role of celibacy. It concludes with a discussion demonstrating that the male character of the ministerial priesthood is based on the will of Jesus and is not contrary to womenಙs dignity on their role in the Church.
Book Synopsis Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast by : James Valladares PhD
Download or read book Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast written by James Valladares PhD and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04-09 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The clergy abuse scandal has posed the greatest threat to the traditional understanding of the Catholic priesthood since the Protestant Reformation. Now, as then, the deadliest attacks are coming from within the Church. In an attempt to improve a system that allowed a small minority of the clergy to violate children and ameliorate the gross negligence of some bishops who recycled these predators, the American bishops instituted the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People in 2002. It is, unfortunately, doing the Church more harm than good. In Hope Springs Eternal in the Priestly Breast, Fr. James Valladares shows how justice and charity have been violated by some bishops in dealing with accused priests. He examines the pertinent canons that guide the Churchs judicial system and finds that these are often ignored or wrongly applied. He provides true cases that highlight the injustice of the process and the agony of priests who have been subjected to the charters draconian mandates. The Church has incurred tremendous financial losses because of settlements rising from both legitimate and false claims. Her image has been marred by the secular media, which has taken advantage of the crisis. Even so, we often fail to understand how trivial these are in comparison to the damage done to the priesthood by the enactment of the charters policies. This is the most pressing issue that the bishops need to address.
