Sample Book Insights: #1 We can view our own bodies as a form of reincarnation. We know our bodies are ever changing. Cells are constantly dying and being renewed in a never-ending cycle. We don’t have the same body we had ten, twenty, or thirty years ago. #2 The doctrine of reincarnation is a philosophy, and as such it does not conflict with any established form of religion. It enhances, makes it fuller. It is difficult for some people to accept, but they should try to live the best life they can through their own belief. #3 I began experimenting with hypnosis in 1979. I found subjects easily because there is an interest in this philosophical idea even if it is only from the standpoint of curiosity. #4 I planned to treat my method as a scientific experiment and see if it was repeatable. I wanted to use it on as many different types of people as possible. If the same results were obtained, this would add to the validity of the theory of reincarnation.

Book excerpt: "Illustrated throughout in four-color pictures, Jesus and First-Century Christianity in Jerusalem traces the little-known story of the original Jewish-Christian community. Focusing on the first century (33-135 CE) in Jerusalem after the death of Jesus, the authors of this book present evidence to show that the Jerusalem community remained true to their Jewish heritage and had a connection with the Essenes. Jesus and First-Century Christianity in Jerusalem brings to light Christianity's Jewish connections and an appreciation of Christianity's Jewish heritage."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in caves near the site of Qumran in 1947, this mysterious cache of manuscripts has been associated with the Essenes, a "sect" configured as marginal and isolated. Scholarly consensus has held that an Essene library was hidden ahead of the Roman advance in 68 CE, when Qumran was partly destroyed. With much doubt now expressed about aspects of this view, The Essenes, the Scrolls and the Dead Sea systematically reviews the surviving historical sources, and supports an understanding of the Essenes as an influential legal society, at the centre of Judaean religious life, held in much esteem by many and protected by the Herodian dynasty, thus appearing as "Herodians" in the Gospels. Opposed to the Hasmoneans, the Essenes combined sophisticated legal expertise and autonomy with an austere regimen of practical work, including a specialisation in medicine and pharmacology. Their presence along the north-western Dead Sea is strongly indicated by two independent sources, Dio Chrysostom and Pliny the Elder, and coheres with the archaeology. The Dead Sea Scrolls represent not an isolated library, quickly hidden, but burials of manuscripts from numerous Essene collections, placed in jars in caves for long-term preservation. The historical context of the Dead Sea area itself, and its extraordinary natural resources, as well as the archaeology of Qumran, confirm the Essenes' patronage by Herod, and indicate that they harnessed the medicinal material the Dead Sea zone provides to this day.

Book excerpt: The early Christian and medieval practice of spiritual marriage, in which husband and wife mutually and voluntarily relinquish sexual activity for reasons of piety, plays an important role in the development of the institution of marriage and in the understanding of female religiosity. Drawing on hagiography, chronicles, theology, canon law, and pastoral sources, Dyan Elliott traces the history of spiritual marriage in the West from apostolic times to the beginning of the sixteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph explores the meaning and role of Melchizedek and Melchiresac in Judaism of late antiquity. In Part I four texts from Qumran are transcribed from the published photographs and translated: 11QMelchizedek, 4Q'Amramb, 4QṬeharot D, and 4QBerakot A. The commentary focuses on establishing the reading of the texts and restorations made on the basis of parallel biblical passages and other writings among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Part II examines the role of the heavenly Melchizedek in the Qumran literature, particularly in relation to his evil counterpart, Melchiresac. These two figures serve as opposing angels who act as leaders of the earthly and heavenly kingdoms of the sons of light and the sons of darkness. Certain Zoroastrian religious concepts that were well known before the second century B.C.E. and that parallel the Essene belief in the spirit-leaders of the worlds of light and darkness are also investigated. Part III discusses the influence of the heavenly Melchizedek on the Johannine concept of the Paraclete, on the comparison between Christ and Melchizedek in the NT letter to the Hebrews, on the NT Son of Man, and on the identification of Melchizedek with the angel Michael.
