Download or read book A New Divinity written by Mark Jones and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study on Reformed theological debates during the »Long Eighteenth Century« in Britain and New England. By »Long« a period that goes beyond 1700–1799 is in view. This examination begins just before the eighteenth century by looking at the Neonomian-Antinomian debate in the 1690s. This is followed by the Marrow Controversy in Scotland in the eighteenth century. After that, the authors address the ecclesiological debates between George Whitefield and the Erskines. The doctrine of free choice concerning Edwards and his departure from classical Reformed orthodoxy is highlighted next, followed by reflections on the Edwardseans and the atonement. Returning to Britain again, the volume provides a study on hyper-Calvinism, and on eschatological differences among key figures in the eighteenth century. More specific debates in particular Baptist circles are noted, including the battle over Sandemandianism and the Trinitarian battles fought by Andrew Fuller and others. Returning to ecclesiology, a discussion on the subscription controversy in Philadelphia in the early eighteenth century and an analysis of the debate about the nature of »revival« in New England close this volume.
Book Synopsis The Scary Cloud Monster by : Carol Erskine
Download or read book The Scary Cloud Monster written by Carol Erskine and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Scary Cloud Monster- A Kid Hero Story" is one of several stories originally written for my children. Although the idea of a scary story may seem antithetical to child development and child safety, these stories were designed to be exciting for the relevant age group while promoting the idea that children can use their innate and learned abilities to meet the challenges of their lives. There is a strong educational and science component to the story. Indeed, The Scary Cloud Monster, is colorfully illustrated by a talented graphic artist who is also my daughter-in law, is the story of two young brothers, (around ages 5 and 7) who on a sunny day with a friend, are chatting about the rumor of a cloud monster. As the sun disappears and their friend runs home, Nick and Max are faced with the appearance of an ominous dark cloud that comes alive. As the "hands" of the giant cloud grab hold of Max, the boys use their knowledge about clouds and rain to defeat the monster cloud. The boys use the garden hose in the yard to spray water into the cloud causing it to rain out, successfully defeating the cloud monster. The boys talk about a "Make it Rain" experiment learned in school that showed them when a cloud fills with water, it rains out. Children are urged to try the very simple experiment which is set out for them after the story ends. There is also a safety rule reminding children to tell a trusted adult if they are ever in trouble. It is important to note that the goal of the story is to show that children are heroes who can solve difficult situations without the "special powers" of superheroes. This story is unique in that it uses an age appropriate "scary" theme to encourage children to resolve challenges facing them by using their own education and abilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of A Civil Action—this true story of a North Carolina outdoorsman who teams up with his Appalachian neighbors to save treasured land from being destroyed will “make you want to head for the mountains” (Raleigh News & Observer). LIVING ALONE IN HIS WOODED MOUNTAIN RETREAT, Jay Leutze gets a call from a whip-smart fourteen-year-old, Ashley Cook, and her aunt, Ollie Cox, who say a local mining company is intent on tearing down Belview Mountain, the towering peak above their house. Ashley and her family, who live in a little spot known locally as Dog Town, are “mountain people,” with a way of life and speech unique to their home high in the Appalachians. They suspect the mining company is violating North Carolina’s mining law, and they want Jay, a nonpracticing attorney, to stop the destruction of the mountain. Jay, a devoted naturalist and fisherman, quickly decides to join their cause. So begins the epic quest of “the Dog Town Bunch,” a battle that involves fiery public hearings, clandestine surveillance of the mine operator’s highly questionable activities, ferocious pressure on public officials, and high-stakes legal brinksmanship in the North Carolina court system. Jay helps assemble a talented group of environmental lawyers to contend with the well-funded attorneys protecting the mining company’s plan to dynamite Belview Mountain, which happens to sit next to the famous Appalachian Trail, the 2,184- mile national park that stretches from Maine to Georgia. As the mining company continues to level the forest and erect the gigantic crushing plant on the site, Jay’s group searches frantically for a way to stop an act of environmental desecration that will destroy a fragile wild place and mar the Appalachian Trail forever.

Book Synopsis You Have Seen Their Faces by : Erskine Caldwell
Download or read book You Have Seen Their Faces written by Erskine Caldwell and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle years of the Great Depression, Erskine Caldwell and photographer Margaret Bourke-White spent eighteen months traveling across the back roads of the Deep South--from South Carolina to Arkansas--to document the living conditions of the sharecropper. Their collaboration resulted in You Have Seen Their Faces, a graphic portrayal of America's desperately poor rural underclass. First published in 1937, it is a classic comparable to Jacob Riis's How the Other Half Lives, and James Agee and Walker Evans's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, which it preceded by more than three years. Caldwell lets the poor speak for themselves. Supported by his commentary, they tell how the tenant system exploited whites and blacks alike and fostered animosity between them. Bourke-White, who sometimes waited hours for the right moment, captures her subjects in the shacks where they lived, the depleted fields where they plowed, and the churches where they worshipped.

Download or read book Daditude written by Chris Erskine and published by Prospect Park Books. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wise, wry, and witty essays on fatherhood from Chris Erskine, the beloved columnist for the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. “Charming, well written, concise, and to the point. Perfect for anyone who enjoys stories of fatherhood.” — Library Journal Life is never peaceful in Chris Erskine's house, what with the four kids, 300-pound beagle, chronically leaky roof, and long-suffering wife, Posh. And that's exactly the way he likes it, except when he doesn't. Every week in the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune (and now and then in many other papers), Erskine distills, mocks, and makes us laugh at the absurdities of suburban fatherhood. And now, he's gathered the very best of these witty and wise essays—and invited his kids (and maybe even Posh) to annotate them with updated commentary, which they promise won't be too snarky. This handsome book is the perfect gift for the father who would have everything—if he hadn't already given it all to his kids.

But when he gets there, nothing is what he thought it would be. The project has nothing at all to do with engineering, and he finds himself working alongside his wacky eighty-something- year-old aunt, a homeless man, and a punk rock girl as part of a town-wide project to adopt a boy from Romania. Mike may not learn anything about engineering, but what he does learn is far more valuable.

Adrian is small for his age, even for a twelve year old. It doesn't help that he's an albino, which makes those he meets wonder if he's an angel or a devil. Since Adrian can write, his father wants him to be a scribe. That's just about the last thing Adrian wants. When the Scots invade England and Adrian's best friend Hugh runs off to find his father and fight in battles, Adrian soon follows, intent on finding Hugh and joining him in glorious warfare against the pagans invading England from the north. When Adrian finds Hugh, who is caring for a wounded Scotsman, he's horrified that Hugh would aid an enemy. But soon, as Adrian gets to know the Donald, he begins to question what he's been taught about the enemy and the nature of war. In this epic journey an afflicted boy finds and inner strength he never knew belonged to him.
