Book excerpt: The circus performer's ability to walk on a tightrope is not a miraculous feat; it is just that he knows about balance more than you do. Not surprisingly, the same applies to crossing life's tightrope. One way or another, balance needs to be achieved in our life. Circumstances may help you make it an ideal balance, or you might be forced to compromise at times. However, it remains essential to recognize that achieving such a balance is a duty that can never be entirely disregarded. The Equilibrium Zone is somehow a philosophy, a lifestyle, and a way of thinking that you will find applicable and beneficial in various ways. But first, you will have to understand the deep meaning of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of exchange rate misalignments and the resulting payments imbalances have plagued the world economy for decades. At the Louvre Accord of 1987, the Group of Five industrial countries adopted a system of reference ranges for exchange rate management, influenced by proposals of C. Fred Bergstan and John Williamson for a target zone system. The reference range approach has, however, been operated only intermittently and half-heartedly, and questions continue to be raised in policy and scholarly circles about the design and operation of a full-fledged target zone regime. This volume, with chapters by leading international economists, explores one crucial issue in the design of a target zone system: the problem of calculating Williamson's concept of the fundamental equilibrium exchange rate (FEER). Williamson contributes an overview of the policy and analytic issues and a second chapter on his own calculations.

Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Plate tectonic collision, climate oscillation, glacial fluctuation, severe wind and water erosion—all have wrought dramatic change on the landscape of the Western Himalaya, one of the most dynamic and spectacular landscapes on Earth. Study of the region—from the Western Himalaya foothills and lowlands to the Arabian Sea—is of particular value to geology and geomorphology because of the size and frequency of events. That much of South Asia is relatively inaccessible has enhanced the significance of research in Pakistan and adjacent areas. Himalaya to the Sea focuses on the general evolution of landforms in Pakistan but also represents an essential guide for predictive, protective and remedial measures to mitigate the natural hazards which plague the region and constrain development. The book describes regional erosion and sedimentation within the context of topographical evolution; more specifically, chapters deal with neotectonics, past and present glaciation, general mountain geomorphology and process mechanics, past and present fluvial processes and landforms, wind-blown loess deposits, age dates, soils, marine terraces and archaeology. This is the first integrated assessment of the geomorphology and Quaternary evolution of this region, from highlands to ocean. Presenting new research, methodologies and theory, this highly illustrated volume also provides the first comprehensive bibliography to the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explains the fundamental theory and mathematics of water and wastewater treatment processes By carefully explaining both the underlying theory and the underlying mathematics, this text enables readers to fully grasp the fundamentals of physical and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater. Throughout the book, the authors use detailed examples to illustrate real-world challenges and their solutions, including step-by-step mathematical calculations. Each chapter ends with a set of problems that enable readers to put their knowledge into practice by developing and analyzing complex processes for the removal of soluble and particulate materials in order to ensure the safety of our water supplies. Designed to give readers a deep understanding of how water treatment processes actually work, Water Quality Engineering explores: Application of mass balances in continuous flow systems, enabling readers to understand and predict changes in water quality Processes for removing soluble contaminants from water, including treatment of municipal and industrial wastes Processes for removing particulate materials from water Membrane processes to remove both soluble and particulate materials Following the discussion of mass balances in continuous flow systems in the first part of the book, the authors explain and analyze water treatment processes in subsequent chapters by setting forth the relevant mass balance for the process, reactor geometry, and flow pattern under consideration. With its many examples and problem sets, Water Quality Engineering is recommended as a textbook for graduate courses in physical and chemical treatment processes for water and wastewater. By drawing together the most recent research findings and industry practices, this text is also recommended for professional environmental engineers in search of a contemporary perspective on water and wastewater treatment processes.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, the field of socio-emotional development and aging has rapidly expanded, with many new theories and empirical findings emerging. This trend is consistent with the broader movement in psychology to consider social, motivational, and emotional influences on cognition and behavior. The Oxford Handbook of Emotion, Social Cognition, and Problem Solving in Adulthood provides the first overview of a new field of adult development that has emerged out of conceptualizations and research at the intersections between socioemotional development, social cognition, emotion, coping, and everyday problem solving. This field roundly rejects a universal deficit model of aging, highlighting instead the dynamic nature of socio-emotional development and the differentiation of individual trajectories of development as a function of variation in contextual and experiential influences. It emphasizes the need for a cross-level examination (from biology and neuroscience to cognitive and social psychology) of the determinants of emotional and socio-emotional behavior. This volume also serves as a tribute to the late Fredda Blanchard-Fields, whose thinking and empirical research contributed extensively to a life-span developmental view of emotion, problem solving, and social cognition. Its chapters cover multiple aspects of adulthood and aging, presenting developmental perspectives on emotion; antecedents and consequences of emotion in context; everyday problem solving; social cognition; goals and goal-related behaviors; and wisdom. The landmark volume in this new field, The Oxford Handbook of Emotion, Social Cognition, and Problem Solving in Adulthood is an important resource for cognitive, developmental, and social psychologists, as well as researchers and graduate students in the field of aging, emotion studies, and social psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrological cycle plays a central role in geobiological and near-surface geological processes and in the energy balance of the earth. It is of crucial importance to many vital practical problems relative to man and his environment. This is especially true in arctic and subarctic regions, where knowledge of hydrologic processes is particularly limited. The introductory section of this report discusses the global hydrologic cycle and summarizes current estimates of the quantities of water involved in various portions of it. Following this, the definitions and boundaries of the arctic and subarctic are reviewed; a map showing these boundaries and annotations of a number of publications dealing with this problem are also presented. The main part of the report gives several hundred annotations of reports that directly discuss elements of the water balance in arctic and subarctic regions. These annotations are grouped by geographic area: the Northern Hemisphere, Europe, the U.S.S.R., Alaska, Canada, and Greenland and Iceland. For each area, annotations are presented according to water-balance elements: precipitation, evapotranspiration, runoff, streamflow, groundwater contributions to runoff, and changes in glacial storage. Book excerpt: This book is written with second year chemical engineering undergraduate students in mind. Chemical engineering undergraduate students are generally taught Equilibrium Stage Operations in their second year. This is the first time they are introduced to equilibrium stage-based separation processes. The goal is to present the equilibrium stage concepts and operations in a manner comprehensible to second year chemical engineering students with little or no prior exposure to separation processes. The book consists of sixteen chapters. It covers single-stage and multi-stage absorption and stripping, flash distillation, multi-stage column distillation, batch distillation with and without reflux, liquid-liquid extraction and solid-liquid leaching. Although the book is focused on equilibrium staged separation processes, the final chapter (chapter 16) is devoted to the analysis and design of continuous contacting packed columns as packed columns are becoming increasingly important in practical applications.
