Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epitome, 1936, Vol. 60 A dry catalog of a man's career and accomplishments can but present a very inadequate picture of the man himself. There is lacking the vital element which distinguishes a real per sonality. In Dr. Emery's case the outstanding qualities were an engaging affability and a con scientious devotion to duty. Towards faculty and students he was always kindly, fair, courteous, and sympathetic without in the least being gullible. He demanded a great deal of himself and expected much from others. He was an able administrator, an excellent committee man and a capable presiding officer. His knowledge of business methods and parliamentary procedure was supplemented by a generous fund of common sense and an almost uncanny faculty of getting at the crux of a situation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epitome, 1909, Vol. 33 When he was called to the Chair of Civil Engineering at Lehigh Univer sity in 1878, the young instructor in the Sheffield Scientific School showed brilliant promise, as evidenced particularly in his work, Method of Least Squares. Far be it from us to say that Prof. Merriman would not have evolved in another sphere. But perhaps it is not too much to say that the struggling young institution furnished as favorable an environment as any; that its poverty was a stimulus and the absolutely free hand given him an inspiration. Prof. Merriman made the Department of Civil Engineering in Lehigh University. Likewise Lehigh made Prof. Merriman the teacher he became by furnishing a fertile field for the particular seed he had to sow. The benefit was mutual. A concrete instance of this is found in the matter of text-books written by Prof. Merriman. Some of his most impor tant works, the books on the materials of engineering and on bridges, were largely the outgrowth of lectures in the classroom. The Treatise on Hydraulics was prepared as the result Of work in instituting the Univer sity's hydraulic laboratory. Download or read book Shahnameh written by Abolqasem Ferdowsi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 1041 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive translation by Dick Davis of the great national epic of Iran—now newly revised and expanded to be the most complete English-language edition A Penguin Classic Dick Davis—“our pre-eminent translator from the Persian” (The Washington Post)—has revised and expanded his acclaimed translation of Ferdowsi’s masterpiece, adding more than 100 pages of newly translated text. Davis’s elegant combination of prose and verse allows the poetry of the Shahnameh to sing its own tales directly, interspersed sparingly with clearly marked explanations to ease along modern readers. Originally composed for the Samanid princes of Khorasan in the tenth century, the Shahnameh is among the greatest works of world literature. This prodigious narrative tells the story of pre-Islamic Persia, from the mythical creation of the world and the dawn of Persian civilization through the seventh-century Arab conquest. The stories of the Shahnameh are deeply embedded in Persian culture and beyond, as attested by their appearance in such works as The Kite Runner and the love poems of Rumi and Hafez. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Download or read book Orientalism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East that is—three decades after its first publication—one of the most important books written about our divided world. "Intellectual history on a high order ... and very exciting." —The New York Times In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding.
Book Synopsis The Sciences of the Artificial, reissue of the third edition with a new introduction by John Laird by : Herbert A. Simon
Download or read book The Sciences of the Artificial, reissue of the third edition with a new introduction by John Laird written by Herbert A. Simon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Simon's classic work on artificial intelligence in the expanded and updated third edition from 1996, with a new introduction by John E. Laird. Herbert Simon's classic and influential The Sciences of the Artificial declares definitively that there can be a science not only of natural phenomena but also of what is artificial. Exploring the commonalities of artificial systems, including economic systems, the business firm, artificial intelligence, complex engineering projects, and social plans, Simon argues that designed systems are a valid field of study, and he proposes a science of design. For this third edition, originally published in 1996, Simon added new material that takes into account advances in cognitive psychology and the science of design while confirming and extending the book's basic thesis: that a physical symbol system has the necessary and sufficient means for intelligent action. Simon won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1978 for his research into the decision-making process within economic organizations and the Turing Award (considered by some the computer science equivalent to the Nobel) with Allen Newell in 1975 for contributions to artificial intelligence, the psychology of human cognition, and list processing. The Sciences of the Artificial distills the essence of Simon's thought accessibly and coherently. This reissue of the third edition makes a pioneering work available to a new audience.
Download or read book Ignition! written by John Drury Clark and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.
