Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomophthoreae of the United States The plants that are to be considered in the present paper belong to a class which, al though made up of several groups differing widely from one another in their habit and affinities, is yet, by reason of a peculiarity common to all its members, possessed of a certain individuality of its own that renders it susceptible of a consideration apart from all other forms of plant life. This peculiarity, by reason of which the class is usually characterized as entomogenous or entomophytous, consists in an obligatory parasitism upon insects, which, although in some instances it exists without apparent injury to the insect host, is usually of such a nature as to cause its death; often resulting, especially among noxious insects, in widespread mortality. Although a few of the more common or conspicuous forms of entomophytous plants had attracted the notice of botanists even in the last century, it was not until within comparatively recent years that they began to be studied with any care, and the work of Robin1 is the first contribution of importance 011 the subject. This work still remains, with two exceptions,2 the only attempt that has been made to bring together all the known forms of insect parasites; but since its publication very important contributions have been made to our knowledge of the subject, through the medium of numerous scattered papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomologica Americana, Vol. 3: April 1887 to March 1888 This insect, one of the most beautiful, as well as one of the largest of its genus, for many years was known only in isolated examples. The type came from Yreka, Cal. Then it was taken here and there, in from one to four or five specimens. In West Farms, by Mr. Angus; in New Jersey, by Mr. Doll; in Covington, Ky., by Mr. Dury; in Ills., by Prof. French; in Evansville, Ind., by Mr. Evans, as well as other places, but everywhere very rarely. A year or two since however its true home was found; Mr. Franck of Brooklyn, while travelling through Kentucky, heard ofa local collector, and after the manner of the brethren of the net visited him to see who he was. And what he had. Imagine his surprise to find that this collector, unknown to fame, had C. Marmomta by the scores. Our wide awake Brooklynite came to us showing box after box of these regal insects! By a misfortune many were broken, but we saw enough to excite our wonder. The collector reported, that it was very common in his vicinity. Geo. D. Hulst. The prothoracic spiracle is placed a little above the root Of the wing and immediately behind the antenna. The abdominal spiracles are distinct on both sides Of the abdomen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Entomological Society of America, Vol. 15 The external genitalia of male insects are so variable in structure even within the limits of a single family, that it is a very difficult matter to trace the homologies of their component parts; and much detailed study of many types from all orders must be done before the subject can be placed upon a isatis factory foundation. The difficulties experienced in the present work in comparing the various types of Orthoptera alone have been such that it was found desirable to give a relatively large amount of time and Space to this order, and as a result the other orders have necessarily been somewhat sacrificed. Some of them, such as the Plecoptera and Dermaptera, have been but superficially treated, owing to lack of material. It is hoped that these neglected groups will receive their due share of attention at another time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Writings of Thomas Say on the Entomology of North America, Vol. 1 The number of works through which the descriptions of insects published by Say are scattered, has been a serious obstacle to the progress of Entomology in the United States. As the founder of that branch of science in this country, the basis of all knowledge of our species rests upon a correct determination of those known to him; but the labor and expense of acquiring this information is so great, in consequence of the cost and number of the works to be consulted, that it is within the power of few to possess even a moderately complete series of his contributions. For the purpose of aiding the researches of the student of Entomology in this country, and for the securing of due credit to the labors of this great naturalist abroad, I have here brought together all the descriptions of insects published by him. By the introduction of the paging of the original publications [in brackets] into the body of the text, the labor of referring to a separate index for the place of publication is obviated, and the true reference can be readily made. With the view of increasing the usefulness of the work, notes have been added, in which the species, so far as possible, are referred to genera adopted in the present condition of science. And I must here express my earnest thanks to Baron R. von Osten Sacken, of the Russian Legation, at Washington, for his kindness in furnishing me with his notes on the Diptera described by Say, and to Mr. Philip R. Uhler for similar notes upon Orthoptera, Neuroptera and Hemiptera. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the Cincindelæ of the United States; Revision of the Elateridæ of the United States; Synopsis of the Melolonthidæ of the United States The genus Cicindela, a favourite with all entomologists, contains a very large number of species which are mostly distinguished by brilliant colours, and conspicuous markings. Although easily recognised by direct comparison, the structure of these numerous species is varied upon such uniform types, that much difficulty is found in identifying an um known one by description, and the descriptions given by authors are frequently either obscure from their brevity, or tedious from their length. This necessarily results from the want of success in dividing the genus into small groups defined by easily recognised characters; and it is much to be regretted that some of the entomologists of Europe, with large collections at hand, have not made an effort to produce a monograph of this beauti ful genus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Record of American Entomology: For the Year 1868 The year has been one of very considerable activity among our entomologists, as evinced by the appearance of two monthly journals devoted purely to entomology - the "American Entomologist" and the "Canadian Entomologist" - and the large space devoted to popular entomology in the "American Naturalist." There is no doubt but that the collection and description of species in the various groups, and the study of practical or economical entomology, including bee-keeping, will go on making great advances and producing most important results. But it is to the less frequented fields of research that we would draw the attention of entomologists. In the art of bee-keeping Americans are rapidly becoming the most practised and expert hands; but for the science of this art we are indebted to German and French physiologists and embryologists. Our entomologists need to pay more attention to the anatomy, physiology, and to the study of the development of insects, especially as bearing on the subject of parthenogenesis.
