Book Synopsis Religion and Violence in Early American Methodism by : Jeffrey Williams
Download or read book Religion and Violence in Early American Methodism written by Jeffrey Williams and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early American Methodists commonly described their religious lives as great wars with sin and claimed they wrestled with God and Satan who assaulted them in terrible ways. Carefully examining a range of sources, including sermons, letters, autobiographies, journals, and hymns, Jeffrey Williams explores this violent aspect of American religious life and thought. Williams exposes Methodism's insistence that warfare was an inevitable part of Christian life and necessary for any person who sought God's redemption. He reveals a complex relationship between religion and violence, showing how violent expression helped to provide context and meaning to Methodist thought and practice, even as Methodist religious life was shaped by both peaceful and violent social action.
Book Synopsis The Life of Wesley: and the Rise and Progress of Methodism, by Robert Southey by : Tim Fulford
Download or read book The Life of Wesley: and the Rise and Progress of Methodism, by Robert Southey written by Tim Fulford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Wesley was one of Southey’s most influential and bestselling works. It was the first biography of John Wesley – the major figure in the largest religious movement of the eighteenth century – to be published by anyone beyond the Methodist community. In addition, it was a major history of the rise of a phenomenon that Southey and many others saw as a defining sign of contemporary history – the rise of sectarianism and of religious cults. This two-volume edition will represent the full text of the 1820 edition. It will include a comprehensive critical apparatus that will make sense of the major issues posed by the text and how it contributes to studies of both Southey and Romanticism. The edition will feature a critical and contextual introduction, which will set out the origins and composition of the text together with its publication history, as well as offer a carefully considered view of the interplay between the Life and other biographies of Wesley and accounts of Methodism, bringing into view the wide array of sources and influences Southey drew from. It will also examine the book’s reception history, incorporating material from reviews of the period and detailing the controversy it caused in the Methodist community.

Download or read book Tom Paine written by John Keane and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It is hard to imagine this magnificent biography ever being superseded . . . It is a stylish, splendidly erudite work.” —Terry Eagleton, The Guardian “More than any other public figure of the eighteenth century, Tom Paine strikes our times like a trumpet blast from a distant world.” So begins John Keane’s magnificent and award-winning (the Fraunces Tavern Book Award) biography of one of democracy’s greatest champions. Among friends and enemies alike, Paine earned a reputation as a notorious pamphleteer, one of the greatest political figures of his day, and the author of three bestselling books, Common Sense, Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason. Setting his compelling narrative against a vivid social backdrop of prerevolutionary America and the French Revolution, John Keane melds together the public and the shadowy private sides of Paine’s life in a remarkable piece of scholarship. This is the definitive biography of a man whose life and work profoundly shaped the modern age. “[A] richly detailed . . . disciplined labor of scholarship and love, an exemplar of the rewards of a gargantuan effort at historical research. . . . In short, buy it; it’s definitive.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of The Journal of Religious History, Literature and Culture comprises some of the papers delivered at the ‘George Whitefield after Three Hundred Years’ International Conference held in June 2014 at Pembroke College, Oxford, commemorating the tercentenary of George Whitefield’s birth in 1714. The Revd George Whitefield (1714–70) was a very important early Methodist leader, clergyman and writer, who has not attracted as much scholarly attention as John and Charles Wesley. This interdisciplinary volume contains articles on ‘George Whitefield and the Secession Movement’s Reaction to the Cambuslang Revival’ by Kenneth B. E. Roxburgh; ‘George Whitefield and Anti-Methodist Allegations of Popery, c.1738–c.1750’ by Simon Lewis; ‘Latitudinarian responses to Whitefield, c.1740–1790’ by G. M. Ditchfield; ‘Preachers, prints and portraits: Methodists and image in Georgian Britain’ by Peter S. Forsaith, with eight attractive images; ‘George Whitefield’s Journals: A Publishing Phenomenon’ by Digby James; and ‘George Whitefield’s Reception in Twentieth-Century German-Speaking Theology’ by Maximilian J. Hölzl.
Book Synopsis Anti-Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth-Century England by : Simon Lewis
Download or read book Anti-Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth-Century England written by Simon Lewis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley and George Whitefield are remembered as founders of Methodism, one of the most influential movements in the history of modern Christianity. Characterized by open-air and itinerant preaching, eighteenth-century Methodism was a divisive phenomenon, which attracted a torrent of printed opposition, especially from Anglican clergymen. Yet, most of these opponents have been virtually forgotten. Anti-Methodism and Theological Controversy in Eighteenth-Century England is the first large-scale examination of the theological ideas of early anti-Methodist authors. By illuminating a very different perspective on Methodism, Simon Lewis provides a fundamental reappraisal of the eighteenth-century Church of England and its doctrinal priorities. For anti-Methodist authors, attacking Wesley and Whitefield was part of a wider defence of 'true religion', which demonstrates the theological vitality of the much-derided Georgian Church. This book, therefore, places Methodism firmly in its contemporary theological context, as part of the Church of England's continuing struggle to define itself theologically.
