Book excerpt: Early in the 18th century, groups of Germans from the principality of Palatinate sailed to America and William Penn's new Quaker settlement at Philadelphia. They came from the Valley of the Rhine River to farm the rolling foothills and fertile valleys of the Delaware, Susquehanna, Lehigh and Perkiomen. Known first as Pennsylvania Deutsch, mis-translated later as Pennsylvania Dutch, they referred to themselves and their dialect as Pennsylvani Ditesch. there is no other place where an immigrant group as small as the Palatine Germans, surrounded by other cultures, has retained the heritage of its homeland virtually unchanged through so many generations. The Pennsylvania Dutch people created the new, original dialect which is the language of this dictionary. They also speak a mixed-up kind of English that passes all understanding by other Americans. Much concern has been expressed about the possibility that the dialect may become lost to future generations for lack of use from day-to-day. It is hoped that this glossary of English words with their Pennsylvania Dutch equivalents may make a desirable and valuable contribution to its preservation. To affect the most reasonable means for conveying the correct sounds of words, we have resorted to fanatical spelling, capitalizing the syllables on which the pronunciation emphasis is placed. Of course, the term Pennsylvania Dutch is applied to far more than the dialect. It also identifies a sturdy, God-fearing group of people and a charming way of life. Interspersed throughout the English-Pennsylvania Dutch dictionary are short, authoritative essays on the local scene and culture, profusely illustrated with drawings and photographs to show the attire, farm buildings, furniture, utensils, decorative arts and colorful designs of these admirable people. - Preface.
