(John Miller Dow) Meiklejohn 1. Tongue, Speech, Language.-We speak of the "English tongue" or of the "French language"; and we say of two nations that they "do not understand each other's speech." The existence of these three words-speech, tongue, language-proves to us that a language is something spoken, -that it is a number of sounds; and that the writing or printing of it upon paper is a quite secondary matter. Language, rightly considered, then, is an organised set of sounds. These sounds convey a meaning from the mind of the speaker to the mind of the hearer, and thus serve to connect man with man. 2. Written Language.-It took many hundreds of years-perhaps thousands-before human beings were able to invent a mode of writing upon paper-that is, of representing sounds by signs. These signs are called letters; and the whole set of them goes by the name of the Alphabet-from the two first letters of the Greek alphabet, which are called alpha, beta. There are languages that have never been put upon paper at all, such as many of the African languages, many in the South Sea Islands, and other parts of the globe. But in all cases, every language that we know anything about-English, Latin, French, German-existed for hundreds of years before any one thought of writing it down on paper. 3. A Language Grows.-A language is an organism or organic existence. Now every organism lives; and, if it lives, it grows; and, if it grows, it also dies. Our language grows; it is growing still; and it has been growing for many hundreds of years. As it grows it loses something, and it gains something else; it alters its appearance; changes take place in this part of it and in that part, -until at length its appearance in age is something almost entirely different from what it was in its early youth. If we had the photograph of a man of forty, and the photograph of the same person when he was a child of one, we should find, on comparing them, that it was almost impossible to point to the smallest trace of likeness in the features of the two photographs. And yet the two pictures represent the same person. And so it is with the English language. The oldest English, which is usually called Anglo-Saxon, is as different from our modern English as if they were two distinct languages; and yet they are not two languages, but really and fundamentally one and the same. Modern English differs from the oldest English as a giant oak does from a small oak sapling, or a broad stalwart man of forty does from a feeble infant of a few months old. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the English Language and Literature States, and out of, we know not how many writers that are deceased, was obvious to the editor from the first, and has pressed upon him from step to step, in his labours. But he has done the best that he could, in the space to which his judgment has restricted the undertaking. He is not, however, assured, that even on this limited scale, some names are not omitted which ought to have been introduced. Should such be ascertained to be the fact, the omission will be cheer fully supplied in a future edition of the work, if that should be ever called for. As no personal preju dices have been knowmgly indulged, and no political, sectional, or secta rian purposes have been sought to be answered in the preparation of the book; the possibility of mistakes in the matter just alluded to, may be safely acknowledged, and the intention of rectifying them sincerely pledged. The single object of the Ameiican portion of the work has been, to give a just and proportionatehistory of the English language and the literature of the language, so far as these have been affected by the intellectual efforts of the anglo-american people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of the English Language If the sole function of language is the communication of thought it follows that every development of thought will produce also a development of language. What we require of language is, therefore, no small thing. We require of it that it shall give expression to every human activity, high and low, good and bad; that it shall render all human knowledge, human emotion, human faith and human ambitions; for the creative impulse in man will never rest until it has found its appropriate expression in words or deeds. We expect of language, therefore, that it shall give expression to every possible development of human thought, and the history of the literature in any particular language is the most convincing proof possible that language rises to the occasion and satisfies those demands. It is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and Its Early Literature 1. Why should we study the origin and history of the English language? It is matter of interest to every person of intelligence and feeling to know who his ancestors were, what they thought, and how they expressed their thoughts. Familiarity with their thoughts and their modes of expression must, to some extent, enrich the mind of the student, and fit him better to play his part in the drama of life. The ancient literatures - whether Greek, Latin, or English - preserve for us the winnowed grain of the human intellect, and no man can afford to ignore them. More than this, there is, as Henry Reed has well said, "a continuity in a nation's literary, as well as political, life; and no generation can cast off the accumulated influence of previous ages without grievous detriment to itself." No force once generated - whether physical or intellectual - is ever lost. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Language In Part V some advantageous changes in order have been made. The most noticeable Of these is in treating the weak verbs before the strong. This order, while not adopted in the larger work, is quite in accord with the plan of both; namely, to give prominence to those elements of the lan guage which have been most stable and most important. The weak verbs were not only more numerous than the strong in the oldest period, but have increased in number and influence at the expense of the latter. Besides, the present arrangement not only emphasizes the more regular weak class, but also brings together all the less regular classes, an advantage in itself. It seems to solve the diffi culty with which each teacher of Old English is confronted, that of finding a text which is of proper size to use in an ordinary College course in Old English without infringing too much upon time which belongs more particularly to grammatical study and to reading.
