Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rail is potentially a very efficient form of transport, but must be convenient, reliable and cost-effective to compete with road and air transport. Optimal control can be used to find energy-efficient driving strategies for trains. This book describes the train control problem and shows how a solution was found at the University of South Australia. This research was used to develop the Metromiser system, which provides energy-efficient driving advice on suburban trains. Since then, this work has been modified to find practical driving strategies for long-haul trains. The authors describe the history of the problem, reviewing the basic mathematical analysis and relevant techniques of constrained optimisation. They outline the modelling and solution of the problem and finally explain how the fuel consumption can be minimised for a journey, showing the effect of speed limits and track gradients on the optimal driving strategy.

Book excerpt: America's economy and lifestyles have been shaped by the low prices and availability of energy. In the last decade, however, the prices of oil, natural gas, and coal have increased dramatically, leaving consumers and the industrial and service sectors looking for ways to reduce energy use. To achieve greater energy efficiency, we need technology, more informed consumers and producers, and investments in more energy-efficient industrial processes, businesses, residences, and transportation. As part of the America's Energy Future project, Real Prospects for Energy Efficiency in the United States examines the potential for reducing energy demand through improving efficiency by using existing technologies, technologies developed but not yet utilized widely, and prospective technologies. The book evaluates technologies based on their estimated times to initial commercial deployment, and provides an analysis of costs, barriers, and research needs. This quantitative characterization of technologies will guide policy makers toward planning the future of energy use in America. This book will also have much to offer to industry leaders, investors, environmentalists, and others looking for a practical diagnosis of energy efficiency possibilities.

Book excerpt: Energy Efficiency in Air Transportation explores the relationship between air transportation and energy use, starting with an analysis of air transport energy sources and their potential development. The book examines how different elements of the air transport system make use of energy, with an analysis of various methods for optimizing energy consumption. The book covers the consequences of energy use in terms of economics, environmental impact and sustainable development, with a review of the existing and proposed regulatory measures addressing those factors. Aeronautical and air transport engineers interested in aerial vehicle systems design, as well as public administrators and regulators concerned with energy efficiency or environmental issues in air transport, will benefit greatly from this comprehensive reference, which captures necessary background information along with the newest developments in the field. Examines new developments in energy efficiency in the air transport field Includes exergy analyses of aerial vehicles and systems Shows the environmental impact from fuel use including local air quality, consumption of non-renewable materials and contribution to climate change Discusses the CO2 emissions certification required by ICAO for new aircraft models

Book excerpt: This report is a summary, based primarily on a literature review, of the energy-savings potential of the elements in the transportation planning process and systems management. Within the scope of long-range planning, the energy aspects of land use and mode of transportation were investigated, whereas for the short range the energy potential of the various transportation systems management strategies were considered. The role of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation in energy-saving activities was also considered. The report should be of value to transportation planners and traffic engineers as an overview of the energy-use characteristics of activities within transportation planning and systems management and as a resource document for detailed energy analyses.

Book excerpt: This report assesses an array of transportation policies designed to reduce energy use and describes the intersection of these policies with general transportation problems such as congestion and air pollution. The report: describes the U.S. transportation system and its energy use; presents and evaluates forecasts of energy use to 2010; compares and contrasts U.S. and European travel and energy use patterns; discusses reasons governments may choose to intervene in transportation markets; and describes and evaluates a range of policy options to reduce U.S. transport energy use, from gasoline taxes to urban planning. Its objective is to provide a balanced, qualitative perspective of issues and problems rather than a highly quantified analysis.
