It is a play published in a standard "actor's script" format and can be purchased for reading pleasure or as a production script.NOTE ON THE SCRIPTThe story of the Sleeping Beauty in her castle is a familiar one, although many of the "familiar" details are not found in the original tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm, which is not really a complete narrative (most characters are not named, for example). But it does include intriguing details such as the lack of satisfactory tableware as the reason for the evil enchanter's exclusion from the party. From this central core, the script builds a complete tale, with more fully realized characters with their own individual personalities and motivation.The original tale includes certain problematic aspects. The beauty sleeps for 100 years and has no prior connection with the prince, whose love for her develops as she lies in sleeping death. The animated film wisely rejected that approach, as well as the uncertainty as to whether the princess (not to mention all those in the castle) wakes due to a kiss or simply because the 100-year curse has run its course. The current script goes farther, making the princess a more fully realized character. She cannot awaken herself, but events need not end with the kiss. In the present story, there is still the evil enchanter with whom they all must deal.The six enchanters encounter mutual suspicion, misunderstanding, courage, and even nobility in the face of certain defeat. The hero's background provides the young would-be lovers with challenges of their own, separate and apart from the evil enchanter's curse. Ultimately, though, the story remains the story of true love, and of the curse, as the princess and her sweetheart must confront a dramatic and powerful villain - a villain whose evil and magic itself must confront the nature of love and the obligations of past friendship.Suitable for audiences of all ages, the script also provides opportunities for actors of all ages and experience levels.
