Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emperor's Marble Pavement, the second of four novels about the fall of Constantinople, finds Niccolo Gritti and Demetrius Alexandrou plunged in the turmoil of a city on war's brink, their friendship complicated by the presence of Theodora, Demetrius' pious sister and the prostitute Cinnamon. Now in the Emperor's service, Niccolo must make accommodation with an embattled Venetian merchant colony. The struggle between Constantine's supporters and those who would appease the Ottomans climaxes in the infamous Service of Union in Hagia Sophia. Then Demetrius disappears, a victim of his peace-party enemies. Niccolo goes in pursuit and the friends are reunited in the Turkish court, under the cynical eye of Mehmet II. Here, courtesy of Nestor-Iskander, a Christian fanatic in the Sultan's service, they witness the Ottoman siege train's ominous preparations before fleeing back to Constantinople. In The Emperor's Marble Pavement, the cross-currents of personal and historical destiny take on new turbulence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving from a patrician domus, the emperor's residence on the Palatine became the centre of the state administration. Elaborate ceremonial regulated access to the imperial family, creating a system of privilege which strengthened the centralised power. Constantine followed the same model in his new capital, under a Christian veneer. The divine attributes of the imperial office were refashioned, with the emperor as God's representative. The palace was an imitation of heaven. Following the loss of the empire in the West and the Near East, the Palace in Constantinople was preserved– subject to the transition from Late Antique to Mediaeval conditions – until the Fourth Crusade, attracting the attention of Visgothic, Lombard, Merovingian, Carolingian, Norman and Muslim rulers. Renaissance princes later drew inspiration for their residences directly from ancient ruins and Roman literature, but there was also contact with the Late Byzantine court. Finally, in the age of Absolutism the palace became again an instrument of power in vast centralised states, with renewed interest in Roman and Byzantine ceremonial. Spanning the broadest chronological and geographical limits of the Roman imperial tradition, from the Principate to the Ottoman empire, the papers in the volume treat various aspects of palace architecture, art and ceremonial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work establishes the various perspectives surrounding and emanating from the Roman Emperor Commodus. Included are an in-depth analysis of his major influences as a child/youth, particularly in relation to his family, as well as a discussion of the influences that had occurred in Rome and while in the provinces, despite the frequent denial of any positive attributes towards him within the works of many late Republican authors. Adams analyses the progression of influences and events throughout the life of the infamous emperor in order to clearly establish Commodus' perspectives about not only the Principate, but also how his role within Roman society was clearly influenced by the ideals of his more well-received predecessors (the 'Five Good Emperors' - Edward Gibbon). It is intended that this work will not only appeal to an academic audience but also interested students and laymen who have an interest in one of the most intriguing and infamous characters of the Ancient World.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, everything seemed possible in Afghanistan. The Taliban was gone. A new government had been elected. A cultural renaissance was energizing the country. An actress visiting from Paris casually proposed to some Afghan actors in Kabul: Why not put on a play? The challenges were huge. It had been thirty years since men and women had appeared on stage together in Afghanistan. Was the country ready for it? Few Afghan actors had ever done theater. Did they even know how? They had performed only in films and television dramas. Still, a company of actors gathered—among them a housewife, a policewoman, and a street kid turned film star. With no certainty of its outcome, they set out on a journey that would have life-changing consequences for all of them, and along the way lead to A Night in the Emperor’s Garden.

Book excerpt: The Pyramids and the Taj Mahal are witness to the extravagant architectural tributes that, throughout human history, the great and the wealthy have paid to their dead. In this book, a well-known architectural historian provides a history of funerary architecture in western Europe from the earliest megalithic tombs of prehistory to the establishment of public cemeteries in the nineteenth century. With sensitivity and wit, Howard Colvin traces the ways in which these structures represent changing ideas about the after-life as well as changes in architectural style.

Book excerpt: Other friends reacted differently to her decision to move to Los Angeles. But less dramatically! Kitten perceived negativism towards the United States of America of the Sixties. No one had said anything bad about her moving to Rome in the past. Aside from elders' backbiters' slanderous remarks about Kitten being pregnant, youngsters had praised her for her choice. This time, comments abounded as if she was heading for the moon. As if she were about to reach a point of no return. -"With this decision, you have ratted on your past!" declared a friend of hers she was particularly fond of. -"You have forsworn your ancestors. You have betrayed Paris!" said another. Amazingly enough, these deeply rooted bourgeois had admitted Kitten in their closed-in Parisian circle. In their minds, Rome had belonged to France once. Vogue Magazine was an extremely chic advocate of French fashion. Yet, at twenty-three, the girl-who was about to move on-had lived more years outside France! Outside Paris to be exact! It was as if her entourage knew nothing of her birthplace, her childhood stage, and her many school years abroad. Everyone was outraged by her eminent departure.
