Book excerpt: Associative economics is a philosophy of money developed from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner. It places human beings at the centre of all economic activity, replacing the power of unseen 'market forces' with personal freedom and responsibility. In this comprehensive book, Gary Lamb explains associative economics, its background and principles, and its potential to change our world, along with possible pitfalls. He gives examples of successful projects and offers practical small steps that we can make to improve our situation. This is a useful introduction to an important form of alternative economics.

Forty years after Gunnar Myrdal's seminal Beyond the Welfare State it is still little grasped in the 'reform' debate that the whole structure and economies of our societies are being transformed. This book reasserts the importance of a new employment and productive model - that of the 'associative economy' - which integrates social solidarity with economic planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the role of government policy in economic development in the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea has achieved economic success on many fronts. Real GNP has tripled every decade since the 1960s. A dynamic and flexible manufacturing sector now dominates the economy. The benefits of growth have been widely distributed, with a sharp decrease in poverty. This study, like others in the series, seeks to draw lessons from such success and to identify and analyze the policies behind this strong economic performance. Koreas development strategy and macroeconomic performance are outlined in Part I. Several factors are seen to underlie strong growth, including the maintenance of a stable macroenvironment, flexible and pragmatic policies, and investment in infrastructure and human capital. Part II assesses the role played by industrial policy since 1961. Particular attention is given to the Heavy and Chemical Industry (HCI) drive, launched in 1973 to diversify and upgrade Koreas industrial sector. The authors note that while the HCI has been largely successful, it also has been very costly, particularly to the financial sector. Part III outlines the role of institutions and the close relationships among the government, the bureaucracy, and business. The key to Koreas rapid development, according to the authors, was the governments commitment to growth and its early focus on equity and wide distribution of the gains from growth. The authors also laud the efficiency and effectiveness of Koreas public and private sector institutions, which they see as models for all developing nations.

However, there is an ongoing lack of progress in this field due to the challenge of bridging the gaps between applied science, policy, and society. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as green economics, organic farming, and sustainable development from a nature vs. nurture perspective, this book is ideally designed for agricultural researchers, professionals, academicians, policymakers, and farmers seeking current research on sustainability in farming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book conducts a comparative legal study from two analytical points of view. First, it accounts for the legal dimensions of the fight against poverty and the right to development as seen from the perspective of domestic legal law. It examines the domestic legal tools, such as constitutional law, that aim to contribute to the fight against poverty and the right to development. Second, the book accounts for the domestic contributions to the international legal framework and examines cross-cutting themes of the contemporary state-of-play on the fight against poverty more broadly and of the right to development. The book consists of several national and thematic reports, which look at these issues from either a national or a thematic perspective. Its first chapter is a general report, which draws on the national and thematic reports to compare, systematize and question the contemporary features at play within the field of the fight against poverty and the right to development.
