Book excerpt: This dissertation offers an in-depth analysis of the history of Asian American stereotypes presented throughout U.S. media and popular culture, with particular emphasis on the impact of racialized gender stereotypes on Asian American males. Utilizing a theoretical hermeneutic design, three primary stereotypes emerged as essential historical themes employed to control the image and perception of Asian Americans: (1) The Perpetual Foreigner, (2) The Yellow Peril, and (3) The Model Minority. This dissertation provides background information regarding the socio-political context surrounding the historical formation of each primary stereotype, and proposes a unique perspective of how each forms a self-perpetuating cycle that allows for its continued existence. Psychoanalytic and postcolonial frameworks further explore the psychological implications of these stereotypes on Asian American subjects, and reveal the complex intersection of patriarchy, colonialism, and hegemonic masculinity. Potential avenues to address these stereotypes include improvements in media representation, redefining new concepts of Asian American masculinity free from hegemonic standards, and building solidarity with other marginalized populations to no longer be used as a racial wedge as honorary Whites. Only through embracing their identity as unique people of color, can Asian Americans escape their current position as Other in U.S. society.
