Book excerpt: Elsie is a calico cat who was born to do great things. When she is taken by humans to their apartment, she begins plotting to take over the world. Soon humans will be in subjugation to cats. As Her Royal Highness Elsie Cat the First, she will unify cats across the world and provide them with their just dues. But Elsie encounters obstacles to her goals: from incompetent messenger rats to spoiled neighbor cats unwilling to join the resistance. This delightful tale from a feline's perspective will vindicate those who always claimed cats were plotting something. The Elsie Files sparkles with acerbic wit amid the contrary ambitions of Elsie and the pesky humans. As Elsie schemes to dominate the humans, she'll begin to question her aims. Will ruling the world be as wonderful as she's always dreamed? Christine Webb gives voice to the pet that prompted the phrase 'dogs have owners; cats have staff.'

Book excerpt: Dermot Harding is ten years older than me.A family friend. An employee on my father's ranch. But I've loved him as long as I can remember. At eighteen, I kissed him and he pushed me away. He said I was too young. The army took him from me for three long years, but now he's back at Gold Rush Ranch-looking at me like he's never looked at me before. Letting his hands linger longer than they should. Offering to help me train the racehorse I've always dreamed of owning.I say that I've moved on, but our chemistry? It's electric. It's overpowering. And soon all our reasons for staying away from each other fall away, along with our clothes. He says he's too old and too broken for someone like me. He says we can never work. But his body tells another story.I put my pride on the line for him once before.Am I a fool to risk it again?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morton Farrier was no longer at the top of his game. His forensic genealogy career was faltering and he was refusing to accept any new cases, preferring instead to concentrate on locating his own elusive biological father. Yet, when a particular case presents itself, that of finding the family of a woman abandoned in the midst of the Battle of Britain, Morton is compelled to help her to unravel her past. Using all of his genealogical skills, he soon discovers that the case is connected to The Spyglass File—a secretive document which throws up links which threaten to disturb the wrongdoings of others, who would rather its contents, as well as their actions, remain hidden forever. This is the fifth book in the Morton Farrier genealogical crime mystery series, although it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story. Further information, and a FREE prequel story for the series, is available from the author's website at nathandylangoodwin.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an historical survey of women’s sport from 1850-1960. It looks at some of the more recent methodological approaches to writing sports history and raises questions about how the history of women’s sport has so far been shaped by academic writers. Questions explored in this text include: What are the fresh perspectives and newly available sources for the historian of women’s sport? How do these take forward established debates on women’s place in sporting culture and what novel approaches do they suggest? How can our appreciation of fashion, travel, food and medical history be advanced by looking at women’s involvement in sport? How can we use some of the current ideas and methodologies in the recent literature on the history and sociology of sport in order to look afresh at women’s participation? Jean Williams’s original research on these topics and more will be a useful resource for scholars in the fields of sports, women’s studies, history and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elsie MacGill achieved many firsts in science and engineering at a time when women were considered to be inferior in the sciences. In 1923, at the age of nineteen, she became the first woman to attend engineering classes at the University of Toronto. She was the first woman in North America to hold a degree in aeronautical engineering and the first woman aircraft designer in the world. As chief engineer for the Canadian Car and Foundry Company she oversaw the production of the Hawker Hurricane, and designed a series of modifications to equip the plain for cold weather flying. Her Maple Leaf trainer may still be the only plane ever to be completely designed by a woman. And she did all this while suffering from polio. In this biography we learn that she supervised 4500 workers and produced about 1450 Hawker Hurricanes by the end of WWII. Elsie was a popular heroine of her time, inspiring the comic book "Queen of the Hurricanes" in the 1940s. In later life she became a powerful feminist activist, advocating for the rights of women and children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth look at how women have shaped the history and legacy of Indiana University. Women first enrolled at Indiana University in 1867. In the following years they would leave an indelible mark on this Hoosier institution. However, until now their stories have been underappreciated, both on the IU campus and by historians, who have paid them little attention. Women at Indiana University draws together 15 snapshots of IU women's experiences and contributions to explore essential questions about their lives and impact. What did it mean to write the petition for women's admission or to become the first woman student at an all-male university? To be a woman of color on a predominantly white campus? To balance work, studies, and commuting, entering college as a non-traditional student? How did women contribute to their academic fields and departments? How did they tap opportunities, confront barriers, and forge networks of support to achieve their goals? Women at Indiana University not only opens the door to a more inclusive and accurate understanding of IU's past and future, but also offers greater visibility for Hoosier women in our larger understanding of women in American higher education.
