Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology of Elizabethan Dedications and Prefaces Davies, for instance, is represented in this collection, it is because their dedications and prefaces are wholly in verse. Limitations of date, length, and form leave us, then, with a collection of prose dedications and epistles to the reader, chosen from Elizabethan books between 1557 and 1623 that are not too long to be reproduced in their entirety. The arrangement is strictly chronological in the order of the first appearance of each in print; for it is believed that the historic development of this form of writing may thus best be traced. I have called it an Introductory Study, as it would require a larger volume than this to deal with the details of such a complicated subject. The book is intended for the general reader, who may wish to know some thing of how the Elizabethan Reformation affected the every-day life of the people. As there is so much in dispute, I have thought it best to add references, and these may be of some aid to students of the period: In addition, they will serve to give some support to my posit'wns and to clear the air amid the dust of controversy. I have done my best to eliminate prejudice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Elizabethan Age: Stirring Records of the Intrepid Bravery and Boundless Resources of the Men of Queen Elizabeth's Reign As Elizabeth's reign passed on into more dangerous times, the early loyalty to a young Queen began to develop into a fierce and devoted attachment to religious liberty, menaced so long by Spain and the Pope. We must remember what the Englishmen of those days feared for themselves and their families, when we read of cruelties by sea and land that some what shock our sense of what is right. Drake will seem to some of us nothing more than an exalted pirate, if we only consider his exploits and fail to remember that deep in his heart he loved righteousness, and was convinced that life was not worth having without freedom - civil and religious. It is only when we are in danger of losing a blessing that we really and fully awake to its value. Elizabethan heroes were tried by the severest of tests; the fear of foreign invasion never left them. They were, most of them, only brave men seeking to do their duty to their Queen, their country, and their God: they may have a lesson for us who live, so we believe, in times of greater ease, refinement, and security. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elizabethan Influence on the Tragedy of the Late Eighteenth and the Early Nineteenth Centuries Each of these new tendencies pointed back to the glamor of an older time, when life, partly it is true because of retrospect, but partly also because of its inherent qualities, was a colorful pageant, and a happily unlearned people still felt the mystery of existence and wonder about things eternal. Playwrights and poets alike experienced that Revival of the Middle Ages that Heine gives as his definition of romance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promised Land a Drama of a People's Deliverance, in Five Acts, (in the Elizabethan Style) With regard to the last-mentioned point it may be objected that the women in the play are allowed more scope and freedom than is usual in the East but a reference to the Bible will show that the women of Israel in the early days probably had a good deal of independence. I think I am right in saying that the wearing of a veil by a woman is only twice alluded to in the Mosaic books, and then apparently as something out of the ordinary course. Book excerpt: Engaging with histories of the book and of reading, as well as with studies of material culture, this volume explores ’popularity’ in early modern English writings. Is ’popular’ best described as a theoretical or an empirical category in this period? How can we account for the gap between modern canonicity and early modern print popularity? How might we weight the evidence of popularity from citations, serial editions, print runs, reworkings, or extant copies? Is something that sells a lot always popular, even where the readership for print is only a small proportion of the population, or does popular need to carry something of its etymological sense of the public, the people? Four initial chapters sketch out the conceptual and evidential issues, while the second part of the book consists of ten short chapters-a ’hit parade’- in which eminent scholars take a genre or a single exemplar - play, romance, sermon, or almanac, among other categories-as a means to articulate more general issues. Throughout, the aim is to unpack and interrogate assumptions about the popular, and to decentre canonical narratives about, for example, the sermons of Donne or Andrewes over Smith, or the plays of Shakespeare over Mucedorus. Revisiting Elizabethan literary culture through the lenses of popularity, this collection allows us to view the subject from an unfamiliar angle-in which almanacs are more popular than sonnets and proclamations more numerous than plays, and in which authors familiar to us are displaced by names now often forgotten.
