And to become the eleventh Sage, you must embark on a journey of impenetrable purpose, abounding with unknown peril, beckoned by enigmatic vehemence, driven toward unfathomable destinations. Wade Burton regains consciousness in an ambulance, then passes out again. He enters a sanctuary of transcendental training where he rapidly ascends various levels of achievement and learns that he was Wild Bill Hickok in a previous life. Within reach of the highest level attainable within the sanctuary, he suffers a head injury and regains consciousness back in the ambulance. In the hospital, he learns he has been charged with murder. The only problem is that he cant remember anything except his experience in the sanctuary. To make matters worse, the sanctuary apparently doesnt even exist.

Everything is set for a bright adventure... and then someone is found hanging dead just weeks before the launch. Fear and paranoia spread as the death begins to look more and more like a murder. Book excerpt: In response to the events following September 11, 2001, a number of leading cultural studies and interpretive qualitative researchers write from their own experiences and hearts. These essays by noted scholars Kellner, Fine, McLaren, Richardson, Denzin, Giroux and others, were written in crisis within days and weeks of September 11. The immediacy of their writing is refreshing and reflects the varied emotional and critical responses that bring meaning to this event. From the poetic to the personal, the theoretical to the historical, these contributions represent intelligent and reflective responses to crises. This collection of essays allows the contributors to tell us how they made sense of these tragic events and predicts what the place of the humanities and the social sciences might hold in an age of terror. The articles were originally published in journals "Qualitative Inquiry" and "Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Qufu, in north China’s Shandong Province, is famous as the hometown of Kong Qiu (551–479 BCE)—known as Confucius in English and as Kongzi or Kong Fuzi in Chinese. In The Kongs of Qufu, Christopher Agnew chronicles the history of the sage’s direct descendants from the inception of the hereditary title Duke for Fulfilling the Sage in 1055 CE through its dissolution in 1935, after the fall of China’s dynastic system in 1911. Drawing on archival materials, Agnew reveals how a kinship group used genealogical privilege to shape Chinese social and economic history. The Kongs’ power under a hereditary dukedom enabled them to oversee agricultural labor, dominate rural markets, and profit from commercial enterprises. The Kongs of Qufu demonstrates that the ducal institution and Confucian ritual were both a means to reproduce existing social hierarchies and a potential site of conflict and subversion.

Book excerpt: This volume contains nine chapters of translation, by a range of leading scholars, focusing on core themes in the philosophy of Zhu Xi (1130-1200), one of the most influential Chinese thinkers of the later Confucian tradition. It includes an Introduction to Zhu's life and thought, a chronology of important events in his life, and a list of key terms of art. Zhu Xi's philosophy offers the most systematic and comprehensive expression of the Confucian tradition; he sought to explain and show the connections between the classics, relate them to a range of contemporary philosophical issues concerning the metaphysical underpinnings of the tradition, and defend Confucianism against competing traditions such as Daoism and Buddhism. He elevated the Four Books-i.e. the Analects, Mengzi, Great Learning, and Doctrine of the Mean-to a new and preeminent position within the Confucian canon and his edition and interpretation of these four texts was adopted as the basis for the Imperial Examination System, which served as the pathway to officialdom and success in traditional Chinese society. Zhu Xi's interpretation remained the orthodox tradition until the collapse of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and exerted a profound and enduring influence on how Confucianism was understood in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current ecological crisis is a matter of urgent global concern, with solutions being sought on many fronts. In this book, Seyyed Hossein Nasr argues that the devastation of our world has been exacerbated, if not actually caused, by the reductionist view of nature that has been advanced by modern secular science. What is needed, he believes, is the recovery of the truth to which the great, enduring religions all attest; namely that nature is sacred. Nasr traces the historical process through which Western civilization moved away from the idea of nature as sacred and embraced a world view which sees humans as alienated from nature and nature itself as a machine to be dominated and manipulated by humans. His goal is to negate the totalitarian claims of modern science and to re-open the way to the religious view of the order of nature, developed over centuries in the cosmologies and sacred sciences of the great traditions. Each tradition, Nasr shows, has a wealth of knowledge and experience concerning the order of nature. The resuscitation of this knowledge, he argues, would allow religions all over the globe to enrich each other and cooperate to heal the wounds inflicted upon the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book revisits the concepts of “the new politics of welfare” and “Adivasi and Indigenous livelihoods”, situating the existing body of knowledge of these subjects within the context of state policy and the socio-cultural developments witnessed in India after independence, specifically the impact of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in the Adivasi/ Indigenous areas. Since India’s independence, the major challenge before the State has been how to provide employment to the vast amount of unskilled labour in rural areas. In order to examine the functioning of institutions under MGNREGA in a tribal community of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, this book assesses the act’s impact on, and drawbacks regarding, the socio-economic condition of the Indigenous people, evaluating the constraints faced by the functionaries in implementing the scheme. Its findings point out the inefficiency and rampant corruption involved in the implementation of the MGNREGA over the years. The book will serve to contribute to raising awareness on the part of the targeted groups and, above all, to showing officials the importance of transparency and responsible governance for the effective implementation of this scheme. India needs to develop its own pro-active measures to cultivate a democracy of the oppressed, in order to combat the current tyranny of the majority which prevails in the country. Its findings also provide new data showing that large-scale MGNREGA policy represents an important tool of mitigating violent conflict in India.
