This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the International Law and Laws of War This abridgment has been prepared at the suggestion of a number of professors and instructors in our colleges and higher institutions of learning. The experience of our officers, both volunteers and regulars, in the great civil war which has just terminated, has proved that this subject has been too much neglected, not only in our colleges, but also in our two great national schools - the Military and Naval Academies. An attempt is here made to supply a suitable text-book for such instruction. The plan of the larger work has been closely followed, the chapters are the same, and only a few of the paragraphs have been changed. Therefore, the instructor or student who may desire to further investi gate any particular question, has only to turn to the corresponding chap ter and paragraph of the larger edition, and to refer to the authorities there quoted. It should be remembered that these authorities are not quoted in support of the author's opinions, but are often in conflict both with those Opinions and with each other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of War Shepherds' fires, lit on a stormy coast, to guide the uncertain seaman these lines might well be applied to the following pages. They were written for young officers. The reader must not look to find in them a complete, a methodical, still less an academic account of the art of war, but rather a mere discussion of certain fundamental points in the conduct of troops, and above all the direction which the mind must be given so that it may in every circumstance conceive a manoeuvre at least rational. If it prove useful in this respect, by enlightening the reader, or by giving him a sound direction, this book will have fulfilled its purpose. When young officers Jom their regiments and propose to study the conduct of troops in the field, they hear talk of certain principles which govern war. They attempt in vain to discover those guiding principles; they cannot find them either in what they have been previously taught, or in the reading of military works. Principles, they are told, are a matter of common sense, of judgment; their application varies according to circumstance; they cannot be written down or learned. When the moment comes for exercise on varied ground and for the autumn manoeuvres, they hear their senior officers criticise in the name of these same principles the tactics adopted. It then appears that though their elders know these famous principles, they often apply them wrongly. It is yet another example of the great gulf between the knowledge of a truth and its use in practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and the Weather Agency, though sufficiently startling, is not one which, in this age of progress, ought to be consid ered as impossible of practical realization. Aside from its connection with the superstitions of certain savage tribes, it is an Opinion of comparatively recent origin, and is one which cannot be regarded as belonging, in any degree, to a certain class of notions which prevail among the unthinking, and which, being based neither on reason nor observed facts, are respectable, if at all, only for their anti quity; but, on the contrary, it is one which is con fined principally to those who are accustomed to draw conclusions only from adequate premises, and whose belief in the matter referred to has generally been founded on facts which have come under their own observation. When numerous observers, each independently of the others, arrive at an identical conclusion, in reasoning from facts which they have separately noticed in widely different fields, such conclusion is certainly worthy of respect, and may be assumed to contain the elements of truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Synopsis Philosophies at War by : Fulton J. Sheen
Download or read book Philosophies at War written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by Colchis Books. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two ways of looking at the war: one as a journalist, the other as a theologian. The journalist tells you what happens; the theologian not only why it happens, but also what matters. If we look at this war through the eyes of a journalist or a commentator, it will he only a succession of events without any remote causes in the past, or any great purpose in the future. But if we look at the war through the eyes of God, then the war is not meaningless, though we may not presently understand its details. It may very well be a purposeful purging of the world’s evil that the world may have a rebirth of freedom under His Holy Law, for: Every human path leads on to God, He holds a myriad finer threads than gold, And strong as holy wishes, drawing us With delicate tension upward to Himself. Our approach is from the divine point of view, first of all, because it is the only explanation which fits the facts; secondly because the American people who have been confused by catchwords and slogans are seeking an inspiration for a total surrender of their great potentialities for sacrifice, both for God and country. The great mass of the American people are frankly dissatisfied with the ephemeral and superficial commentaries on what is happening. Being endowed with intelligence, they want to know why it is happening. We all know what we are fighting against; we want to know what we are fighting for. We all know that we are in a war; we want to know what we must do to make a lasting peace. We know whom we hate; but we want to know what we ought to love. We know we are fighting against a barbarism that is intrinsically wicked; we want to know what we have to do to make the resurrection of that wickedness impossible.
