Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Theosophy During the last few years there has been an increasing need for some book that would give a fairly comprehensive outline of the nature and aims of the Theosophical Society, and of what are commonly called the 'Theosophical Teachings,' and would at the same time be sufficiently simple and free from Sanskrit terms to be easily readable by those who are only just beginning to study Theosophy. It is in consequence of this need, and in response to the request of many members in Australia, that this work has been undertaken. It is a very difficult task to reduce the 'Theosophical Teachings' to a form that would be readable by the average enquirer, as many of the ideas may be unfamiliar, and portions of the subject are in themselves abstruse and metaphysical. I have tried, however, to avoid the most difficult points, and have used but very few Sanskrit terms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ocean of Theosophy N attempt is made in the pages of this book 2 to write of Theosophy in such a manner as to be understood by the ordinary reader. Bold statements are made in it upon the knowledge of the writer, but at the same time it is distinctly to be understood that he alone is responsi ble for what is therein written: the Theosophical' Society is not involved in nor bound by anything said in the book, nor are any of its members any the less good Theosophists because they may not accept what he has set down. The tone of settled convie tion which may be thought to pervade the chapters is not the result of dogmatism or conceit, but flows from knowledge 'based upon evidence and experience. Members of the Theosophical Society will notice that certain theories or doctrines have not been gone into. That is because they could not be treated with out unduly extending the book and arousing needless controversy. The subject of the Will has received no treatment, inasmuch as that power or faculty is hidden, subtle, undiscoverable as to essence, and only visible in effect. As it is absolutely colorless and varies in moral qual ity in accordance with the desire behind it, as also it acts frequently without our knowledge, and as it operates in all the kingdoms below man, there could. Be nothing gained by attempting to enquire into it apart from the Spirit and the desire. No originality is claimed for this book. The writer invented none of it, discovered none of it, but has simply written that which he has been taught and which has been proved to him. It therefore is only a handing on of what has been known before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theosophy Theosophy, in a secondary sense - the above being the primary - is the body of doctrine, obtained by separating the beliefs common to all religions from the peculiarities, specialities, rites, ceremonies and customs which mark off one religion from another; it presents these common truths as a consensus of world beliefs, forming, in their entirety, the wisdom-religion, or the Universal Religion, the source from which all separate religions spring, the trunk of the Tree of Life from which they all branch forth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Theosophy Of those that are yet to come there is also much to be said, and on this subject too a great deal of definite information 1s available. Such information is obtainable, first, from men who have already passed much further along the road of evolution than we, and have consequently direct experience of it; and, secondly, from inferences drawn from the ob vicus direction of the steps which we see to have been previously taken. The goal of this particular cycle, is in sight, though still far above us;-but it would seem that, even when that has been attained, an infinity of progress still lies before everyone who is willing to undertake it. One of the most striking advantages of Theosophy is that the light which it brings to us at once solves many of our problems, clears away many difficulties, accounts for the apparent injustices of life, and in all directions brings order out of seeming chaos. Thus while some of its teaching is based upon the observation of forces whose direct working is some what beyond the ken of the ordinary man of the world, if the latter will accept it as a hypothesis he will very soon come to see that it must be a correct one, because it, and it alone, furnishes a coherent and reasonable explanation of the drama of life which is being played before him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theosophy and the Theosophical Society None other can reveal it to him; none other can walk for him along the path to realization. It is written in a Hebrew Scripture that no man may deliver his brother nor make agreement unto God for him; for between the supreme Spirit who is God and the fragment of that Spirit who is man there is no intermediary, there is none with the right to dictate. And so in our Society, while we seek the truth, we bid every member seek it and find it for himself; for truth is only truth when the intellect can perceive it; only then is it truth to any individual man; and the condition of know ing the truth, of seeing the truth, is to develop to the point whence the truth is visible. The moment you see it, you must believe it; until you see it, you ought not to say that you know it. Hence the perfect freedom of our Society, the absence of all authority exercised over the minds of its members. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Theosophy In an attempt to compile a brief, popular outline of so vast and far-reaching a movement as Theosophy, it becomes the writer to approach the subject with ab solute fearlessness and impartiality; and most of all is it necessary for whoever undertakes to write on so stupendous and universal a theme, to distinctly re member that no limited definition of the word, as applied to the tenets of any special society or school of thought, can possibly do justice to the term. The Theosophical Society was founded more than forty years ago; its life is approaching the half-century, to say nothing of former manifestations of that perpetual life. Would it not seem, then, that the bare subject, Theosophy, should be pretty well exhausted; that the elements should be so plain and familiar, that any further statement of them, at this late day, would be, to gild refined gold, to paint the lily, to throw a perfume on the violet? Should not the speaker have chosen something deeper, more abstruse, perhaps some subject genuinely occult? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Theosophy: A Very Condensed Outline Theosophy is a word that comes from the Greek words meaning Divine Wisdom. The divine wisdom is that which teaches man the way to reach God by grow ing into his image and likeness, developing the deific powers within him. But it is also the wisdom or knowledge which includes all other knowledge, which means all the sciences, forms of philosophy and ethics, as would necessarily be the case if, as we affirm, it came from the Logos or God of our solar system through His agents. Theosophy, then, may be considered as science, religion, philosophy and ethics as seen from God's point of view. This would also further mean they were to be considered not solely from the point of view of their present status, but also from that of their origin and their destiny. We shall present the subject in very brief outline under these four headings, referring read ers at frequent intervals to the works which deal in authoritative detail with the subjects touched upon. Theosophy as Science at once gives the origin of science, its rationale, its future and the synthesis of its parts. It considers all material and spiritual things within the solar system as made up of two elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. We cannot speak oi it as dis covered, for in truth it has always been known to mankind, though sometimes temporarily forgotten in certain parts of the world. There has always existed a certain body of highly-developed men - men not of any one nation, but of all the advanced nations - who have held it in its fulness; and there have always been pupils of these men, who were specially studying it, while its broad principles have always been known in the outer world. This body of highly developed men exists now, as in past ages, and Theosophical teaching is pub lished to the Western world at their instigation, and through a few of their pupils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theosophy and New Thought The double title given to the book is not meant to imply that Theosophy and New Thought are approximately identical. The inclusion of the two in a Single volume is rather a matter of convenience than of logical clas sification. We recognize that, while they have distinct points of similar ity, they also exhibit quite apparent contrasts in Spirit and content. In particular the intemperate speculation and headlong Orientalism of Theosophy are but partially reflected in New Thought. Both, however, make very high claims, and this fact justifies the subjecting of them to close scrutiny. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Principles of Modern Theosophy Brotherhood - the elder brothers of the Great Orphan Humanity - have preserved till now: the system which furnishes the key to every religion wherein is buried the truth about our nature and our destiny. And as a young servant of that great band of Silent Workers, the author has only followed in the steps of others who, like him, would wish the western nations to know them selves and to some extent the plan of that small por tion of Cosmos in which this little globe swings round the sun. So, with whatever faults, many or few, this book may have, both the author and I are glad of its appearance, for we firmly believe that this is but once more the sounding the same call to our fellows that we helped to sound before in prior lives on this poor globe, the least significant of the seven. For if through this volume but three immortal pilgrims shall be turned to the light held out by the great Brothers, they will be three more gained for the Army of the Future.
