Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Statistical Method The purpose of this book is to furnish a simple text in statistical method for the benefit of those students, economists, administrative officials, writers, or other members of the educated public who desire a general knowledge of the more elementary processes involved in the scientific study, analysis, and use of large masses of numerical data. While it is intended primarily for the use of those interested in sociology, political economy, or administration, the general principles set forth are applicable likewise to every variety of statistical data. The author has found that the members of his classes in this subject were not, as a rule, expert mathematicians, and he believes that this is true of a majority of those persons who are called upon to make practical use of statistics, hence, no pretense whatever has been made, in this work, of presenting any but the most simple of the mathematical theorems upon which statistical method is based. So far as the author is aware, there is no book published in America which attempts to cover the field of statistical method in its present state of advancement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Statistics Throughout is intended to be suitable for those whose mathematics have not been carried to any height or have become rusty from disuse. With this view, when mathe matical symbols were unavoidable, the preliminary hypotheses have been first discussed without algebraic notation and at some length, and those proofs have been chosen which require the minimum mathematical know ledge rather than those which lead most directly to the result. Thus the most important results of the Theory of Error have been obtained without the use of the Differ ential or Integral Calculus, and it is hoped that the greater part even of the chapter on Correlation will be intelligible to those who are not so well equipped as the Major General in the Pirates of Panzanoe. Part II. Is in tended to be introductory and is certainly incomplete the normal law of frequency is the only one discussed, and the correlation of three variables is untouched. The more advanced treatment of this part of the subject is likely to be of interest to but few, who will have little trouble in obtaining the books and journals in which the further development may be found. Short bibliographies are added to the chapter on Interpolation and to Part II. For this purpose. It is hoped that this elementary handling may be of use to some who are interested in the statistical arguments based on the Laws of Probability, and that the definitions, formulae, and proofs given may save others from the necessity of searching in books, long out of print, for elementary theorems and deductions. The treatment in Part II., Section II., is peculiar in that it leaves very much in the background the Method of Least Squares; the phrase, useful in some connections, seems to make the application of the Law of Error to statistics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Educational Measurement With the Elements of Statistical Method This book is an attempt to bridge, in part, a gap between theory and practice in educational tests and measurements. The leaders in the movement for a quantitative study of educational problems have advanced so far into the theory and more complex practical phases of the work that a very large percentage of the teachers and students have considerable difficulty in following them. Most of the books on the subject have either been more or less technical, pre-supposing considerable training on the part of the readers in the field, or they have been largely manuals of directions for giving the tests and scoring the papers, with little reference to the theory and to the problems which have confronted those attempting to measure educational processes and products. This book deals with the processes and problems in a somewhat evolutionary way so that the teachers and students may see the order in which the problems have arisen and the attempted solutions of them. A mere manual of directions for giving tests and scoring the papers will not develop a professional spirit among teachers in this field. They must understand the fundamental principles, or the work becomes purely mechanical and non-professional. It has been the aim of the author to present the fundamental principles in non-technical language, as far as it is possible to do so, and to confine the statistical treatment of the data almost entirely to simple operations in arithmetic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Statistical Learning provides an accessible overview of the field of statistical learning, an essential toolset for making sense of the vast and complex data sets that have emerged in fields ranging from biology to finance, marketing, and astrophysics in the past twenty years. This book presents some of the most important modeling and prediction techniques, along with relevant applications. Topics include linear regression, classification, resampling methods, shrinkage approaches, tree-based methods, support vector machines, clustering, deep learning, survival analysis, multiple testing, and more. Color graphics and real-world examples are used to illustrate the methods presented. This book is targeted at statisticians and non-statisticians alike, who wish to use cutting-edge statistical learning techniques to analyze their data. Four of the authors co-wrote An Introduction to Statistical Learning, With Applications in R (ISLR), which has become a mainstay of undergraduate and graduate classrooms worldwide, as well as an important reference book for data scientists. One of the keys to its success was that each chapter contains a tutorial on implementing the analyses and methods presented in the R scientific computing environment. However, in recent years Python has become a popular language for data science, and there has been increasing demand for a Python-based alternative to ISLR. Hence, this book (ISLP) covers the same materials as ISLR but with labs implemented in Python. These labs will be useful both for Python novices, as well as experienced users.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory of Statistics History of the Origin and Progress 3 of the work, he tells us, Many people were at first surprised at my using the new words, Statistics and Statistical, as it was supposed that some term in our own language might have expressed the same meaning. But in the course of a very extensive tour, through the northern parts of Eurppe, which I happened to take in 1786, I found that in Germany they were engaged in a species of political enquiry, to which they had given the name of Statistics;4 as I thought that a new word might attract more public attention, I resolved on adopting it, and I hepe that it is now completely naturalised and incorporated with our language. This hope was certainly justified, but the meaning of the word underwent rapid development during the half century or so following its introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Vital Statistics In various 'parts of the book will be found critical observations on commonly employed statistical methods, and discussions of problems of public health which lend them selves to statistical treatment. These, it is hoped, will increase the interest and value of the book, and lead to local investigations of disease on similar lines. In a work involving such a mass of statistics it cannot be expected that no errors have crept in. It is believed, however, that these are very few. The author will be grateful for an intimation as to any such errors that may be detected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade there has been an explosion in computation and information technology. With it have come vast amounts of data in a variety of fields such as medicine, biology, finance, and marketing. The challenge of understanding these data has led to the development of new tools in the field of statistics, and spawned new areas such as data mining, machine learning, and bioinformatics. Many of these tools have common underpinnings but are often expressed with different terminology. This book describes the important ideas in these areas in a common conceptual framework. While the approach is statistical, the emphasis is on concepts rather than mathematics. Many examples are given, with a liberal use of color graphics. It should be a valuable resource for statisticians and anyone interested in data mining in science or industry. The book’s coverage is broad, from supervised learning (prediction) to unsupervised learning. The many topics include neural networks, support vector machines, classification trees and boosting---the first comprehensive treatment of this topic in any book. This major new edition features many topics not covered in the original, including graphical models, random forests, ensemble methods, least angle regression & path algorithms for the lasso, non-negative matrix factorization, and spectral clustering. There is also a chapter on methods for “wide” data (p bigger than n), including multiple testing and false discovery rates. Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, and Jerome Friedman are professors of statistics at Stanford University. They are prominent researchers in this area: Hastie and Tibshirani developed generalized additive models and wrote a popular book of that title. Hastie co-developed much of the statistical modeling software and environment in R/S-PLUS and invented principal curves and surfaces. Tibshirani proposed the lasso and is co-author of the very successful An Introduction to the Bootstrap. Friedman is the co-inventor of many data-mining tools including CART, MARS, projection pursuit and gradient boosting.

But in spirit, the title is apt, as the book does cover a much broader range of topics than a typical introductory book on mathematical statistics. This book is for people who want to learn probability and statistics quickly. It is suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate students in computer science, mathematics, statistics, and related disciplines. The book includes modern topics like non-parametric curve estimation, bootstrapping, and classification, topics that are usually relegated to follow-up courses. The reader is presumed to know calculus and a little linear algebra. No previous knowledge of probability and statistics is required. Statistics, data mining, and machine learning are all concerned with collecting and analysing data.
