Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Plane Trigonometry This book originated in a desire to give to my private pupils a better idea of the trigonometric functions of obtuse angles than they could obtain from any book with which I was acquainted. I believe that a student can get a comprehensive and thorough knowledge of trigonometry most quickly and easily, if, at the outset, such definitions are given to the trigonometric functions as will apply to all angles: with this idea for a basis, I have endeavored to prepare. An elementary text-book for general use. By beginning with an explanation of the use of the negative sign as applied to lines and angles, and then giving general definitions to the trigonometric functions, I have been able to demon strate all the fundamental formulas in a perfectly general yet simple manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Trigonometry: With Tables This book contains, in revised form and with some additions, the material of the chapters on trigonometry found in the author's text book on Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry. The theory of the subject is here presented in a manner as direct and elementary as possible, and much attention is given to the applications, which are brought out in numerous examples and exercises. These cover a sufficient range to give the student in technical courses a working knowledge of trigonometry as a tool. Great care has been taken to make the illustrations instructive, and a large amount of graphic work is called for in the exercises throughout the text. The presentation of spherical trigonometry, with applications to the terrestrial globe and to practical astronomy; has been reduced to the space of 17 pages, which will be found to contain a fair introduction to the subject. If this is to be included with plane trigonometry in a three-hour course, the work in identities and in the numerical solution of triangles should be reduced to a mini mum. Four-place tables are appended to the text, in the belief that they are sufficient for a large range of practical applications, and, be cause of their brevity, are less confusing to beginners and enable them to get results in less time than would be the case with more extensive tables. The explanation of the table of logarithms is made on the assumption that the student has no knowledge of the subject of logarithms. Answers are given to nearly all of the odd-numbered exercises. This gives the instructor the liberty of assigning exercises with or without given answers, as may seem best. For the convenience of the student a protractor is provided and will be found inside the back cover. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Geometry, and Plane Trigonometry: With an Appendix, and Very Copious Notes and Illustrations We should form a wrong estimate, however, did we consider the Elements of Euclid, with all its merits, as a finished production. That admi rable work was composed at the period when Geo metry was making its most rapid advances, and new prospects were opening on every side. No wonder that its structure should now appear loose and defective. In adapting it to the actual state of the science, I have therefore endeavoured care fully to retain the spirit Of the original, but have sought to enlarge the basis, and to dispose the accumulated materials into a regular and more compact system. By simplifying the order Of ar rangement, I have materially abridged the labour Of the student. The numerous additions that are incorporated in the text, so far from retarding, will rather facilitate his progress, by rendering more continuous the chain Of demonstration.
