Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Experimental Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is impossible to direct our views to the future im provement of this wide field of science, without deeply lamenting the privation, which we have lately sustained, of two of its most successful cultivators, Sir Humphry Davy and Dr. Wollaston, - at a period of life, too, when it seemed reasonable to have expected, from each of them, a much longer continuance of his invaluable labours. To those high gifts of nature, which are the characteris tics of genius, and which'eonstitute its very essence, both those eminent men united an unwearied industry and zeal in research, and habits of accurate reasoning, with out which even the energies of genius are inadequate to the achievement of great scientific designs. With these excellencies, common to both, they were nevertheless dis tinguishable by marked intellectual peculiarities. Bold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Experimental Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 When the deutoxide is boiled with weak nitric acid, a portion of it parts with oxygen, and enters into solution in the state of protox ide, while the remainder is converted into peroxide, which is' black, and insoluble in all acids except such as deprive it of oxygen. On evaporating the nitric solution, and heatin the product to redness, peroxide is left, which, however, if not su ciently heated, still holds a little nitric acid; and if too strongly, parts with a little oxygen. Owing to this uncertainty, ' Dr. Turner does not rely on artificial per oxide for purposes of analysis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Experimental Chemistry, Vol. 3 of 3 No blame attaches to the publisher for not having originally delayed the republication, until the appearance of the new Eu glish edition, since the demands for the work were so urgent, as well by the students of the University of Pennsylvania, in which it is used as a text book, as by those of other public Insti, tutions, as not to admit of being disregarded. At the same time, in presenting the new matter in a separate form, he believes he has done an acceptable service, both to the purchasers of that part of his edition, already sold, by enabling them to complete their copies with the supplementary volume, and also to those, who, while they may desire to see the latest discoveries in Chemical Science, may not wish to incur the expense of the English copy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Chemistry: For Junior Students We believe that he is right in the plan he has adopted, and that instruction of this nature would greatly facilitate the acquisition of clear and distinct ideas of the leading facts and laws of Chemistry.' (cfiemz'cal News, vol. Xxix. Page This work is divided into four parts, each one being, as far as -practicable, complete in itself. Part I. Is introductory, and deals with first principles, and with the chemistry of the typical elements, hydro gen and oxygen, and their compounds; Part II., with the rest of the non-metals Part III., with the metals; and Part IV., with organic chemistry. The experiments described are, whenever possible, those easily performed; in some cases, however, methods are necessarily detailed which the student may not have either the skill or the means to carry out, but he should endeavour to see these operations carefully conducted. It is assumed throughout that the reader can obtain some practical instruction in glass working and the construction of apparatus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 The principal power productive of chemical phenomena, is that species of attraction, exerted between the parti. Cles of bodies, which brings them into intimate and per manent union. From its exertion between particles of a similar nature, arise -the forms under which bodies exist, and many of the physical qualities of which they are pos sessed. And from its exertion between particles of differ ent kinds, are derived the greater number of substances which compose our globe, - these consisting of certain ele ments retained by this power in a state of combination. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Experimental Chemistry There are two things that the study of a science should accomplish for the student: first, the development of the powers of observation; second, a knowledge of the relations of the principles and facts that underlie that science. The first may be obtained to a greater or less degree from the study of any science by the experimental method; the lat ter however may often be only imperfectly acquired even by those who are able to make accurate observations, but who fail to draw the correct or logical conclusions. It is the aim of this book to aid the student in accomplishing both these things. The author has found by experience (as, in deed, what teacher has not that all beginners in the study of chemistry are by no means natural adepts at making the necessary observations, but that by a sufiiciently prolonged course of experiments their powers in this direction are easily augmented. The difiiculty comes, however, in ena bling the student, after the observations have been made, to form the correct conclusions, and, finally, when both these things have been done throughout the subject, to round it off into a symmetrical whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General Chemistry: With Experiments In too many instances the student is introduced to qualitative analysis as his first laboratory work, and this is followed by gravimetric analysis to complete a course. This plan certainly gives the beginner a distorted idea of the relative importance of analytical chemistry in the study of the science; for the beginner a knowledge of the proper ties of a substance, the methods of its preparation and its uses is far more important than acquaintance with methods of separation, and general illustrative experiments should, therefore, be made the foundation work in the laboratory. Experience has shown me that none' of them are too difficult for beginners. It has been too much the custom to seek easy experiments, without considering whether such experiments would teach general principles and, above all, would emphasize quantitative relations. In the study of an exact science, the latter are, however, the most important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
