Download or read book The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 2 written by Du Bois and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 2: Statics Any limited portion of matter we call a body. A body so small that, so far as its motion is concerned, we can disregard its size we call a material point or particle. Just as a mathematical point, having no dimensions, cannot rotate, but can have motion of trans lation only, so a material point or particle is considered as having motion of translation only. Ever body may be considered as a system composed of such materia points or particles. The diagram representation of a particle is then a mathematical point, bavin position only. When a Ody has motion of translation only, the motion of every one of its points at any instant is the same (page 13, Vol. I), and in such case we may then consider the entire body, whatever its size, as a particle and represent it by a mathematical point. Download or read book The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1 written by Frederick Slate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: An Elementary Exposition, for Students of Physics The following chapters may be arranged in two groups, and the first of these (chapters I - V) is devoted continu ously to building up knowledge of the necessary concep tions, and unfolding their content. It is believed that such a plan will foster in students who use the book some quality of precision and method in statement, while it accustoms them to follow a sustained argument. If re sults like these are not attained by those who cultivate the science of Mechanics, the benefits of their study are but half reaped. The ninth and tenth chapters are given up mainly to auxiliary discussions on Centre of Mass, Moment of Inertia, and Dimensions; leaving three chap ters in that group (chapters VI - VIII) for the usual range of applications. This has been covered with a fair degree of thoroughness; and the problems constitute at the same time a collection of varied illustrations, by means of which the general principles can be elucidated and enforced. Download or read book The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1 written by Frederick Slate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Mechanics, Vol. 1: An Elementary Exposition, for Students of Physics The material contained in these chapters has taken on its present form gradually, by a process of recasting and sifting. The ideas guiding that process have been three: first, to select the subject-matter with close reference to the needs of college students; second, to bring the instruction into adjustment with the actual stage of their training; and, third, to aim continually at treating Mechanics as a system of organized thought, having a clearly recognizable culture value. The result has been maturing under the suggestive influences of repeated presentation to a class of junior grade in the University who have brought to their task a working knowledge of calculus and a good groundwork of experimental physics. The distinctive traits in this attempt to set forth connectedly the conceptions and methods of the science are reproduced from the informal lectures of the class-room, as delivered for several years past. Advantage has been taken, however, of the larger opportunity in writing for publication, to make at some points a completer and more systematic formulation of fundamental doctrine. The seventh chapter has been incorporated here from another course of instruction, in part, at least, because its problems afford exactly the illustration needed of the difference between mathematical and physical forces. Book Synopsis An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics by : Sir James H. Jeans
Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics written by Sir James H. Jeans and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to being among the twentieth century’s major scientific figures, Sir James Jeans (1877–1946) was also one of the greatest modern science expositors. His classic introduction to mechanics endures as a clear and concise presentation of first principles. Although brief, it encompasses a remarkably wide selection of topics. Its subjects include rest and motion, force and the laws of motion, forces acting on a single particle, statics of systems of particles, statics of rigid bodies, center of gravity, work, motion of a particle under constant forces, motion of systems of particles, motion of a particle under a variable force, motion of rigid bodies, and generalized coordinates. Within each chapter, the author carefully explains the most elementary concepts (such as velocity, acceleration, Newton’s laws, friction, moments, and kinetic energy), and he illustrates them with examples. Ideal for beginning physics students or for more advanced readers in need of refreshment, the text emphasizes the fundamental physical principles rather than mathematics or applications. So clearly written that it can be read and understood outside the classroom, it features hundreds of fully worked illustrative examples and test exercises.
