They have important applications as dielectrics, semiconductors, and metals, and as materials for magnetic and optical uses. The recent discovery of `high temperature' superconductors has brought the attention of a wide scientific community to this area and has highlighted the problems involved in trying to understand transition metal oxides. The present book is not primarily about Tc superconductors, although their main properties are discussed in the final sections. The main aim is to describe the varied electronic behaviour shown by transition metal oxides, and to discuss the different types of theoretical model that have been proposed to interpret it. It is intended to provide an introduction to this fascinating and difficult field, at a level suitable for graduate students and other research workers with a background in solid- state chemistry or physics.

Book excerpt: There are many theories at present which attempt to explain the property of high-temperature superconductivity in the new breed of superconducting ceramics - however, the electronic structure of these materials is not yet fully understood. The 29 papers in this work present the results from the use of a wide range of spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance and photoemission, in investigating the electronic structure of the new cuprate perovskites.

Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides have proven to be a fertile research area for condensed matter physicists due to the fascinating array of superconducting, magnetic and electronic properties they exhibit. A particular resurgence of intense activity in investigating the properties of these systems followed the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates, colossal magnetoresistance in the manganites, ferroelectricity in the cobaltites and simultaneous ferroelectric and ferromagnetic ordering in the manganites. These diverse properties of transition metal compounds arise due to the presence of strong electron-electron interactions within the transition element 3d states. Indeed, it is the competition between the localizing effects of such interactions and the comparable hopping strengths driving the system towards delocalization, that is responsible for these wide spectrum of interesting properties. In terms of theoretical and fundamental issues, electronic structure of transition metal oxides play a most important role, providing a testing ground for new many-body theoretical approaches treating the correlation problem at various levels of approximations. In addition to this rich spectrum of properties, metal-insulator transitions often occur and can even be coincident with structural or magnetic changes due to the strong coupling between charge, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom. However, in spite of the immense activities in this area, the underlying phenomena is not yet completely understood. A careful investigation of the electronic structure of these systems will help in the microscopic understanding of these and photoelectron spectroscopy has been established as the most powerful tool for investigating the electronic structures of these systems. In this thesis we investigate the electronic structures of some of these transition metal oxides and the metal-insulator transition as a function of electron correlation strength and doping of charge car.

Book excerpt: The discovery of an unexpectedly large thermopower accompanied by low resistivity and low thermal conductivity in NaxCoO2 raised significant research interest in these materials and let to a number of experimental and theoretical investigations. This interest has strongly been reinforced by the discovery of superconductivity in the hydrated compound Na0.35CoO2 " .3H2O in 2003, and thus, NaxCoO2 experiences an again increasing attention. The similarity of the Na cobaltates to the high temperature superconductors (HTSC) - both are transition metal oxides and adopt a layered crystal structure with quasi-two-dimensional (Cu, Co)O2 layers - is an important aspect of the research activities. In contrast to the HTSC cuprates however, the CoO2 layers consist of edge sharing CoO6 octahedra which are distorted in such a way that the resulting local symmetry is trigonal. The trigonal coordination of the Co sites results in geometric frustration which favours unconventional electronic ground states. The geometrically frustrated CoO2 sublattice also exists in the nonhydrated parent compound NaxCoO2, which has been investigated in this work. The intercalation of water into the parent compound is expected to have little effect on the Fermi surface beside the increase in two dimensionality due to the effect of expansion. Upon lowering the symmetry from cubic to trigonal, the t2g states split into states with eg_and a1g symmetry. Measurements of polarisation and temperature dependent soft X-ray absorption have been performed on a wide doping range of NaxCoO2 single crystals. Beside the Co L_2,3-edges, the O K-edge and the Na K-edge have been measured. These measurements show strong polarisation dependencies especially for the excitations into the lower lying a1g energy level. In addition to that, also an unexpected polarisation dependence for higher energies has been observed, which should be absent in trigonal symmetry. These results point towards a deviation of the local trigonal s.

The ways in which these magnets produce stronger magnetic fields than ordinary iron-core electromagnets is explored. A review of the electronic structure of transition metal oxides and salts is also included in this book, specifically what concerns electron transfer, electron correlation, electron-nuclear coupling, and inter-metal interaction in cuprates. Combining a number of well-known theories of conventional superconductors, a general vortex theory for inhomogeneous superconductors is proposed. Ways to fabricate superconducting magnets in a faster, cheaper and more practical way is also presented.

Book excerpt: In this thesis the author presents the results of extensive spectroscopy experiments beyond the bounds of each transition element to clarify the origins of characteristic spectral features and charge dynamics in charge-spin-orbital coupled phenomena in Mott-transition oxides. Several counterpart 3d transition-metal oxides were adopted as model systems suitable for examining the mechanisms involved, and their electronic structures were systematically investigated using three main spectroscopy methods. Comparative studies on the charge dynamics and Mott transition features of transition-metal oxides were performed: Charge dynamics and thermoelectricity in a typical Mott transition system La1−xSrxVO3, charge dynamics in a doped valence-bond solid system (Ti1−xVx)2O3 and in layered nickelates R2-xSrxNiO4 with charge-ordering instability are investigated thoroughly. The results obtained successfully provide a number of novel insights into the emergent phenomena near the Mott transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron oxypnictide family of compounds1?9 has generated intense interest. The layeredcrystal structure with transition-metal ions in planar square-lattice form and the discovery of spin-density-wave order near 130 K seem to hint at a strong similarity with the copper oxide superconductors. An important current issue is the nature ofthe ground state of the parent compounds. Two distinct classes of theories, distinguished by the underlying band structure, havebeen put forward: a local-moment antiferromagnetic ground state in the strong-coupling approach, and an itinerant ground statein the weak-coupling approach. The first approach stresses onsite correlations, proximity to a Mott-insulating state and, thus, the resemblance to the high-transition-temperature copper oxides, whereas the second approach emphasizes the itinerant-electronphysics and the interplay between the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The debate over the two approaches is partly due to the lack of conclusive experimental information on the electronic structures. Here wereport angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of LaOFeP (superconducting transition temperature, Tc55.9 K), the first-reported iron-based superconductor. Our results favour the itinerant ground state, albeit with band renormalization. In addition, our data reveal important differences between these and copper-based superconductors.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in high pressure diamond anvil cell techniques and synchrotron radiation characterization methods have enabled investigation of a wide range of materials properties in-situ under extreme conditions. High pressure studies have made significant contribution to our understanding in a number of scientific fields, e.g. condensed matter physics, chemistry, Earth and planetary sciences, and material sciences. Pressure, as a fundamental thermodynamic variable, can induce changes in the electronic and structural configuration of a material, which in turn can dramatically alter its properties. The novel phases and new compounds existing at high pressure have improved our basic understanding of bonding and interactions in condensed matter. This dissertation focuses on how pressure affects materials' bonding and electronic structures in two types of systems: hydrogen rich molecular compounds and strongly correlated transition metal oxides. The interaction of boranes and hydrogen was studied using optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy and their hydrogen storage potential is discussed in the context of practical applications. The pressure-induced behavior of the SiH4 + H2 binary system and the formation of a newly formed compound SiH4(H2)2 were investigated using a combination of optical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The experimental work along with DFT calculations on the electronic properties of the compound up to the possible metallization pressure, indicated that there are strong intermolecular interactions between SiH4 and H2 in the condensed phase. By using a newly developed synchrotron x-ray spectroscopy technique, we were able to follow the evolution of the 3d band of a 3d transition metal oxide, Fe2O3 under pressure, which experiences a series of structural, electronic and spin transitions at approximately 50 GPa. Together with theoretical calculations we revisited its electronic phase transition mechanism, and found that the electronic transitions are reflected in the pre-edge region.
