Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread use of the Internet as a tool for gathering and disseminating information raises serious questions for journalists--and their readers--about the process of reporting information. Using virtual sources and publishing online is changing the way in which journalism takes place and its effect on the society it serves. USE LAST THREE PARAGRAPHS ONLY FOR GENERAL CATALOGS... The Electronic Grapevine explores the use of online media by reporters in the United States, and examines the impact that usage may have on how journalism is framed in the cultural sphere, as well as how it is conducted in the professional one. It contains a mix of material examining how it feels to "do" online journalism, how it affects those who consume it, different ways that media scholars go about trying to understand it better, and the likely social and cultural impact of Internet-like technologies on the public, at whom all this electronic information is eventually aimed. Drawing from the emerging scholarly work in the field and from the real-life experiences of working journalists, Borden and Harvey collect contributions that examine why journalists use the Internet, what changes it makes in how they approach their jobs, and what differences they see in conducting their daily newsgathering with this medium rather than other methods. The volume also analyses when and why journalists do not use online media and what the impact of the decision to use or not use the Internet may mean for the outer world, whose perceptions of itself are so often shaped by journalistic portrait. This series of thought-provoking, original essays explores the impact of computer-based information and communication services on traditional journalistic routines and practices, and thereby addresses a critical gap in the scholarly literature on communication, law, and culture. Distinguishing between linkage devices like the Internet, and database resources such as LEXIS/NEXIS, America Online, and others, this book examines the ways in which both types of online services may reshape and redefine not only the products of journalistic effort, but the newsgathering process itself.

Book excerpt: An oral history of the legendary band Primus, with a star-studded cast of interviewees (Tom Waits, Phish front man Trey Anastasio, etc.) "It's a wild ride that's vividly captured in Greg Prato's excellent oral history . . ." —Bass Player Magazine Usually when the "alternative rock revolution" of the early 1990s is discussed, Nirvana's Nevermind is credited as the recording that led the charge. Yet there were several earlier albums that helped pave the way, including the Pixies's Doolittle, the Red Hot Chili Peppers's Mother's Milk, Jane's Addiction's Nothing's Shocking, and especially Primus's 1991 album Sailing the Seas of Cheese. This fascinating and beautifully curated oral history tells the tale of this truly one-of-a-kind band. Compiled from nearly fifty all-new interviews—including Primus members past and present and many more fellow musicians—conducted by journalist/author Greg Prato. This book is sure to appeal to longtime fans of the band, as well as admirers of the musicians interviewed for the book. Interviewees include: Tim Alexander, Trey Anastasio (Phish), Matthew Bellamy (Muse), Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland (The Police), Chuck D (Public Enemy), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Larry LaLonde, Geddy Lee (Rush), Mickey Melchiondo (Ween), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Matt Stone (South Park), Tom Waits, and many more.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 2003. This book examines the growth of news provision on the internet and its implications for news presentation, journalism practice, news consumers, and the business of running news organizations. Much of the focus is placed on the migration of newspapers onto the internet, but references are also made to the establishment of news websites by other organizations. The book examines the growth of online technology as a source of information and entertainment and considers how this development can be framed within models of communication and comments, on the apparent shortage of new models to explain the use, role, effectiveness, and impact of online communications.

Book excerpt: Many people have been employed as journalist, news anchors, and gossip columnists. Mr. Reid and Mr. Bell invented one of the worlds greatest sources of communication, the telephone. Somebody is always calling to say, "Have you heard?" Someone is always looking and saying, "Did you see?" The tabloids in the supermarkets are a very visible source of questionable information. The most recent written talk of the nation in 1991, when I started to write this book, was the "Unauthorized Biography of Mrs. Nancy Reagan." Many people flew to the nearest bookstore and purchased a copy. This was an account of a person that was denied and declared pure fiction. However, there are always those whose curiosity becomes so overwhelming and uncontrollable they would do anything at any price to satisfy their quest to know. As I complete this book, it is now 1999. During the first part of 1998, every eye, ear, and mouth was aimed at President William Bill Clinton. Many times we are willing to accept partial truths and outright prevarication (be it partial or totally untrue, a lie is a lie). This is the reason for the title of this book, "Grapevine." I intend to discuss with you the news we are commissioned to "spread to all the nations," the good news of the gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from mere idle tales, rumors are a valuable window into our anxieties and fears. Rumors let us talk as a community about some very inflammatory issues--issues that may be embarrassing or disturbing to discuss-allowing us to act as if we are talking about real events, not personal beliefs. We can air our hidden fears and desires without claiming these attitudes as our own. In The Global Grapevine, two leading authorities on rumor, folklore, and urban legend--Gary Alan Fine and Bill Ellis--shed light on what contemporary rumors can tell us about the fears and pressures of globalization. In particular, they examine four major themes that emerge over and over again: rumors about terrorism, about immigration, about international trade, and about tourism. The authors analyze how various rumors underscore American reactions to perceived global threats, show how we interpret our changing world, and highlight fears, fantasies, and cherished beliefs about our place in the world. Along the way the book examines a wide variety of rumors-that the Israelis were behind 9-11, the President knew of the attack in advance, tourists wake up in foreign countries with their kidneys stolen, foreign workers urinate in vats of beer destined to be shipped to America. These rumors, the authors argue, reflect our anxieties and fears about contact with foreign cultures-whether we believe foreign competition to be poisoning the domestic economy or that foreign immigration to be eroding American values. Rumors are the visible tip of a vast iceberg of hidden anxieties. Illuminating the most widely circulated rumors in America in recent years, The Global Grapevine offers an invaluable portrait of what these tales reveal about contemporary society.

Book excerpt: Taking a multidisciplinary approach that they identify as a "cyber-realist research agenda," the contributors to this volume examine the prospects for electronic democracy in terms of its form and practice--while avoiding the pitfall of treating the benefits of electronic democracy as being self-evident. The debates question what electronic democracy needs to accomplish in order to revitalize democracy and what the current state of electronic democracy can teach us about the challenges and opportunities for implementing democratic technology initiatives.

Book excerpt: The Daily Planet is a long-awaited selection of Patricia Aufderheide's most important critical essays, updated and organized thematically to demonstrate the breadth of her thinking on media and film, public telecommunications policy, and contemporary society. The result is a pithy and provocative exploration of "the culture of daily life under capitalism". Here, Aufderheide demonstrates criticism that is both activist and analytical. She probes the processes that shape our culture by examining diverse subjects, including the struggle to create quality children's television programming, the meaning of Paul Harvey, the evolution of the war film over the past thirty years, and the ways journalism is changed by the Internet and other new technologies. Throughout, Aufderheide foregrounds democratic values, displaying the penetrating insights that have made her a leading public intellectual and commentator on contemporary culture.
