Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Furnace, Its Evolution, Theory and Practice On my first visit to Canada, in 1897, I constructed an electric furnace and showed it in operation at a lecture on Canada's metals, which was delivered by the late Sir William Roberts-Austen. The application of electrical heat to Metallurgy has always interested me greatly and I hope that this little book may serve to instil this interest in others, and to help forward the application of electric smelting in a country which is so rich in water-powers and mineral resources. This book originated in a series of papers, written about a year ago for the "Canadian Engineer," in which I endeavoured to present, as simply as possible, the principles on which the construction and use of the electric furnace depend, and to give an account of its history and present development. The original papers were written at a time when the experiments of Dr. Haanel, at Sault Ste. Marie, were attracting public attention, and a large section of the book has been devoted to the consideration of these and other advances in the electro-metallurgy of iron and steel. I wish to thank all who have helped me in the preparation of this book, including Dr. Haanel, whose valuable monographs have formed the basis of my chapter on iron and steel, and to whom I am indebted for additional information on this branch of the subject: Prof. J. W. Richards, who has taken an interest in my work, and whose book on "Metallurgical Calculations" has been of considerable assistance in writing the chapter on furnace efficiencies; Mr. E. A. Colby, who gave me information in regard to his induction steel furnace and a sketch for Fig. 25; Mr. Francis A. J. Fitzgerald, who supplied me with the data for Table X.; the editor of the "Electrochemical and Metallurgical Industry," who loaned the block for the frontispiece, and the International Acheson Graphite Company, who gave me information about their furnaces and lent the block for Fig. 40. I also wish to thank those of my personal friends who assisted me in the tedious work of proof-reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An attempt has been made to include all the import ant references since 1900, at which time the electric furnace was becoming established in the iron and steel industry. Since 1907 the reference to Chemical Abstracts is given in addition to the magazine references, since this source will enable the reader to eliminate many of the references here given as unsuitable for his particular needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Furnaces and Their Industrial Applications There is also a type of furnace which the author proposes to include in this work, with the object of rendering it complete, and that is the electrolytic type. Although not, strictly speaking, furnaces, in the ordinary acceptation of' the term, there are several forms of apparatus which depend for their action on a combination of thermal, electrolytic, and chemical effects. Since the office of the furnace proper, viz., that of heating the raw materials, is an essential auxiliary in such cases, it has been resolved to include them in the pages which follow, the necessary line of demarcation between a thermal and an electrolytic process pure and simple being determined by the presence of an aqueous solution. Only such methods and apparatus will be dealt. With as involve the presence of a fused electrolyte. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Inspection of commercial furnaces, attendance at commercial tests, and collection of data, what different types of elec tric furnaces have done or may be expected to do under various conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Furnaces for Making Iron and Steel The quality of pig iron obtained, with especial reference to its suitability for (a) steel manufacture by (1) Bessemer or Siemen's acid process or (2) Bessemer or Siemen's basic process; and (b) foundry purposes. The tests, performed on March 19, 20, and 21, 1904, marked the real beginning of the present practice of the reduction of iron ores in an electric furnace, for although, as will be seen later, the fur naces in use for this purpose at present differ considerably in con struction from the Keller furnace, the principle employed is the same - namely, the ore, flux, and reducing agent are fed around the electrodes, and the heat generated by the current passing through the charge raises the temperature of the ore and fluxes to their melt ing point, and thus enables the carbon to reduce the ore with which it is mixed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Furnaces in the Iron and Steel Industry The belief expressed in the writer's preface five years ago has been well home out. To-day there are over 212 electric furnaces in the iron and steel industry in the United States and Canada out of a total of 562. Over half a million tons of electric steel are being made annually the world over, and production only started less than a score of years ago. Even making the outer ends of the plugs considerably colder than the interior a ected the temperature within but little. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steel Foundry The tremendous increase in the number of electric furnaces in steel foundries since the first edition of this book was written in 1913, and the refinements in electric furnace practice that have resulted, made a revision of this volume advisable. In these nine years, too, much has been added to our knowledge of moulding sands, heat treatment and a great many other phases of foundry practice, which the author has attempted to outline. The work of revision has, of necessity, been done in what little spare time it has been possible to find, and it is the hope of the author that the result will justify the effort expended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Furnaces: The Production of Heat From Electrical Energy and the Construction of Electric Furnaces The present volume is an English version of the second German edition of Die elektrischen Ofen by Dr. Borchers, the well-known authority on electro-metallurgy. The English edition has been brought up to date as far as possible by the inclusion of descriptions of two of the most recent and most successful electric steel furnaces used on the Continent. These descriptions were also kindly supplied by Dr. Borchers, and have been added in an appendix, as the information concerning the furnaces was only obtained after the work had been translated and printed. The method of treatment and classification of electric furnaces adopted is from the point of view of the heating system on which their action is based, and their development and application are examined in an authoritative and critical manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lighting by Acetylene: Generators, Burners and Electric Furnaces As for the American gas generators, a description of types of those which the author has been able to discover from an examination of the United States Patent Office records, direct interviews with the manufacturers or inquiry among the carbide dealers is included; but, since hundreds are experimenting in this field, and since two or three new generators are patented in this country each week, it is quite impossible to include the most recent ones. Suffice it to say that, in the very nature of the problem involved, generators may all be divided into three classes, and that any new machine can differ from the existing forms only in matters of detail. For the production of acetylene it is necessary to bring calcic carbide into contact with water in some kind of vessel from which the resulting gas may be conveyed for use. Whether the carbide is thrown into water, or the water is poured upon the carbide, is in general terms a matter of indifference, the result being practically the same.
