Book excerpt: The multi-year national Elder Economic Security Initiative program at Wider Opportunities for Women (WOW) offers a conceptual framework which includes concrete tools to shape public policies and programs to promote the economic well-being of older adults, whether or not they have the capacity to be fully self-reliant or are in need of certain public supports to age in place with dignity. The EESI program combines coalition building, research, education, and advocacy at the community, state, and national level. With support from the Retirement Research Foundation, WOW has partnered with five states, Illinois, California,Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, to launch the national EESI program. Support from The Atlantic Philanthropies will expand the project to 20 states and result in a national database with information on all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Undergirding the EESI program is the Elder Economic Security Standard Index (Elder Index), a new tool for use by policy makers, older adults, program providers, leaders in the aging advocacy community and the public at large. Developed by the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston and WOW, the Index is a measure of income that older adults require to maintain their independence in the community and meet their daily costs of living, including affordable and appropriate housing and health care. The development and use of the Index promotes a measure of income that respects the autonomy goals of older adults, rather than a measure of what we all struggle to avoid: poverty.

Book excerpt: How much income do the states elders need to meet the rising costs of living? What is the true impact of public support programs, such as medical assistance, utility assistance, or housing assistance on elders expenses and income needs? To accurately answer these questions, policymakers, advocates and social service providers require an accurate measure of elders' economic security. The national Elder Economic Security Initiative program, a multi-year, research-driven initiative to raise awareness and promote policy change for older adults, offers such a benchmark: the Elder Economic Security Standard Index (Elder Index).

The Initiative combines coalition building, research, education, and advocacy at the community, state and national levels. With support from the Retirement Research Foundation, WOW partnered with five pilot states, California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois and Wisconsin, to launch the national Initiative. Support from The Atlantic Philanthropies will expand the project to a total of twenty states, including Minnesota, Connecticut, New Jersey, Michigan, New York, West Virginia and New Mexico in an effort that will ultimately result in a national database with information on all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It features more than 15 papers that explore the relevance of the social environment for health on the micro, meso, and macro level. Overall, the book applies a comprehensive contextual approach that includes discussion of how family and friends, neighborhoods, nations, and welfare regimes influence health. The book first explores the issue on the individual level. It looks at the importance of social capital for health among older people, examines types of social networks and health among older Americans, as well as discusses dynamic social capital and mental health in late life. Next, the book looks at the issue through a neighborhood and societal context, which takes into account day-to-day interaction in the immediate environment as well as the social, health, and economic policies in place in different regions in the world, including America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. From there, the book goes on to offer implications and recommendations for research and practice, including the management of related concepts of research on well-being and health. It also offers a psychosocial approach to promoting social capital and mental health among older adults. This book provides health professionals as well as researchers and students in gerontology, sociology, social policy, psychology, and social work with vital insights into the social factors that increase healthy life years and promote well-being.

Book excerpt: This provocative, intellectually charged treatise serves as a concise introduction to emancipatory gerontology, examining multiple dimensions of persistent and hotly debated topics around aging, the life course, the roles of power, politics and partisanship, culture, economics, and communications. Critical perspectives are presented as definitions for reader understanding, with links to concepts of identity, knowledge construction, social networks, social movements, and inequalities. With today’s intensifying concentration of wealth and corporatization, precarity is the fate for growing numbers of the world’s population. Intersectionality as an analytic concept offers a new appreciation of how social advantage and disadvantage accumulate, and how constructions of race, ethnicity, class, ability, and gender influence aging. The book’s entries offer a bibliographic compendium, crediting the salience of early pioneering theorists and locating these within the cutting-edge of research (social, behavioral, policy, and gene–environment sciences) that currently advances our understandings of human development, trauma, and resilience. Accompanying these foundations are theories of resistance for advancing human rights and the dignity of marginalized populations.

Book excerpt: “Wow. This book totally rocks. It arrived on a day when I was in deep confusion and sadness about my age. Everything about it, from my invisibility to my neck. Within four or five wise, passionate pages, I had found insight, illumination, and inspiration. I never use the word empower, but this book has empowered me.” —Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author Author, activist, and TED speaker Ashton Applewhite has written a rousing manifesto calling for an end to discrimination and prejudice on the basis of age. In our youth obsessed culture, we’re bombarded by media images and messages about the despairs and declines of our later years. Beauty and pharmaceutical companies work overtime to convince people to purchase products that will retain their youthful appearance and vitality. Wrinkles are embarrassing. Gray hair should be colored and bald heads covered with implants. Older minds and bodies are too frail to keep up with the pace of the modern working world and olders should just step aside for the new generation. Ashton Applewhite once held these beliefs too until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces her journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life. Explaining the roots of ageism in history and how it divides and debases, Applewhite examines how ageist stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, looks at ageism in the workplace and the bedroom, exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, critiques the portrayal of elders as burdens to society, describes what an all-age-friendly world would look like, and offers a rousing call to action. It’s time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind of bias. Whether you’re older or hoping to get there, this book will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life. Age pride!
