Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners of the Eighteenth Century I do not undertake to deal with the study of the literary style of the period, a work which is always forward, and in abler hands than my own. Even such lives as those of the writers I have quoted are to serve only to illustrate the conditions of their time. Their biographies have been all charmingly written and their works analyzed by our own best writers in other books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Andrew Rice's autobiography, first published to critical acclaim in 1942, is a remarkable tour through late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century America. When the book was suppressed by the publisher soon after its appearance because of legal threats by a college president described in the book, the nation lost a rich first-person historical account of race and class relations during a critical period—not only during the days of Rice's youth, but at the dawn of the civil rights movement. I Came Out of the Eighteenth Century begins with Rice's childhood on a South Carolina plantation during the post-Reconstruction era. Later Rice moved to Great Britain when he won a Rhodes scholarship, then to the University of Nebraska to accept a professorship. In 1933 he founded Black Mountain College, a legendary progressive college in North Carolina that uniquely combined creative arts, liberal education, self-government, and a work program. Rice's observations of social and working conditions in the Jim Crow South, his chronicle of his own fading Southern aristocratic family, including its famous politicians, and his acerbic portraits of education bureaucrats are memorable and make this book a resource for scholars and a pleasure for lay readers. Historical facts are leavened with wit and insight; black-white relations are recounted with relentless and unsentimental discernment. Rice combines a sociologist's eye with a dramatist's flair in a unique voice. This Southern Classics edition includes a new intro-duction by Mark Bauerlein and an afterword by Rice's grandson William Craig Rice, exposing a new generation of readers to Rice's incisive commentaries on the American South before the 1960s and to the work of a powerful prose stylist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Memoirs of the Eighteenth Century IN the following Memoirs 1 have invited the reader to meet a little company of men and women who may seem, at first sight, to have little or nothing in common with one another, consisting as they do of two grandes dames of the second George's Court, a poet playwright who dabbled in diplomacy, an aristocratic declassee who died in the odour of royalty, an etc-shoemaker turned bookseller, a Highland lady with literary proclivities, and a distinguished scholar who was chiefly remarkable for his misfortunes. Yet the points of resemblance, though less obvious, are scarcely less decided than the points of contrast, for all were children of the same century, all belonged to the genus self-revealer, ' all have left their 'confessions, ' in the form of letters or auto biography, all were celebrated, or at least notorious, in their own day (with the exception of John Tweddell, whose notoriety was posthumous), and all have fallen, whether deservedly or not, into neglect, if not oblivion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare in the Eighteenth Century At no time since his death has Shakespeare not been placed upon a pinnacle by himself as the greatest of all English writers. But each age has its own point of View, its own special interests, its characteristic method of treatment; and no age can ever say the last word on anything that is a living and life-giving force. Say the last word on Shakespeare, and Shakespeare is dead. There can never be finality in the criticism of a great author. The truth and the beauty embodied in his work exercise the taste and the acumen of one critic, and remain undiminished and untarnished for the next. All the best criticism of the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Women of the Eighteenth Century IT may 'excite astonishment that we return to individuals who, at the first glance, appear to be known to everybody, but in no instance have we thought of reanimating one of these figures without the aid of unpublished documents. Up to the pres ent time, moreover, much greater attention has been given to a variation in the text of an author, than to a trait of character in his life. What, however, can be more interesting, than the study of the passions of a man whose name has survived him! Our chief study, therefore, in a poet should be, less the work which bears his name, than the movements of his heart. Poetry in action attracts us more than poetry on paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Scene, in the Eighteenth Century To attain the object in view it was necessary that the treatment of the subject should be at once broad and simple; to enter minutely into details, to offer illustrations of every statement of fact or of opinion, would lessen clearness of outline. It would have been equally inappropriate to load the following pages with references, since a view presented in a few lines is frequently the result of the consideration of many facts, and of numerous authorities. Some references have, however, been inserted, chiefly to enable a reader who desires to follow a particular subject at length, to have at hand some guide when he begins his quest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century The principles governing the choice of selections may be briefly explained. In the first place, it was thought well to re present the half-dozen (more or less) most important prose writers of the century by fairly generous and complete speci mens of their work, approximating some twenty to thirty thou sand words each. These selections cover, in the experience of the editor, the assignments of prescribed reading set for one or two weeks, in college courses dealing with the century as a whole. The authors thus largely represented are Defoe, Swift, Steele, Addison, Johnson, Boswell, and Burke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
