Book excerpt: Measurements of the heat transfer coefficient distribution on flat and ribbed surfaces with interrupted heating are presented. One application of this type of thermal boundary condition is the cooling of surface mounted modules in electronic packaging. Heating occurs at the modules, with no heating between the modules. The heat transfer measurements in the present study are made using the heated-coating method with a thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC). The "coating" is vacuum-deposited gold on a plastic sheet, which is mounted on a Styrofoam surface. The gold film is electrically heated to produce the surface heat flux. The surface temperature is measured by capturing color images of the TLC, using the hue technique. These surface temperature plots are transformed into heat transfer coefficient distributions on the surface of the models. Interrupted heating on the flat surface is obtained by heating strips perpendicular to the freestream flow, with insulated spaces between the strips. The ribbed surface is heated on the top of the ribs only, with insulated unheated cavities in-between. The results show that, as expected, the local heat transfer coefficient is higher on the heated strips of the flat surface interrupted heating case, than would be present at the same locations with a uniform heat flux. The interruption of the thermal boundary layer at each unheated section allows it to "reset", thereby causing the higher heat transfer on the following heated section. The ribbed model shows a slight increase in heat transfer on the ribs above that of the flat plate interrupted heating model. The cavities appear to introduce mixing that causes this change. The increase in h due to the ribs is small, however, when compared to the effect of the interrupted heating.

Book excerpt: The effects of turbulence intensity on the heat transfer distribution, transition and flow separation on a turbine blade was investigated at low Reynolds numbers. Measurements were performed in linear cascades (at both UCDavis and the USAF Academy) at low Reynolds number (67,000 to 144,000) representative of low pressure turbine stages at high altitude. Nominal turbulence intensities of 1% and 10% (generated with biplane lattice grids) were used. The heat transfer was measured with the uniform heat flux (UHF) or heated-coating method. The heated-coating was a gold-film and liquid crystals were used for the surface temperature measurement. A novel laser-tuft surface flow visualization method was also used. For low turbulence levels (1%) the pressure side of the blade exhibited streaks of varying heat transfer possibly associated with Taylor-Gortler vortices. With grid turbulence (10%) these streaks disappeared on the pressure side and the heat transfer nearly doubled. Gird turbulence also increased the heat transfer on the leading edge and suction surface, while advancing the location of boundary layer transition. Good agreement was generally found between the UCDavis and USAFA data. These cascade results compare favorably to those that have been reported with rotation.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was made to obtain quantitative information on heat transfer, flow, and pressure distribution in a branched duct test section that had several significant features of an internal cooling passage of a turbine blade. The objective of this study was to generate a set of experimental data that could be used for validation of computer codes that would be used to model internal cooling. Surface heat transfer coefficients and entrance flow conditions were measured at nominal entrance Reynolds numbers of 45 000, 335 000, and 726 000. Heat transfer data were obtained by using a steady-state technique in which an Inconel heater sheet is attached to the surface and coated with liquid crystals. Visual and quantitative flow-field data from particle image velocimetry measurements for a plane at midchannel height for a Reynolds number of 45 000 were also obtained. The flow was seeded with polystyrene particles and illuminated by a laser light sheet. Pressure distribution measurements were made both on the surface with discrete holes and in the flow field with a total pressure probe. The flow-field measurements yielded flow-field velocities at selected locations. A relatively new method, pressure sensitive paint, was also used to measure surface pressure distribution. The pressure paint data obtained at Reynolds numbers of 335 000 and 726 000 compared well with the more standard method of measuring pressures by using discrete holes.

Book excerpt: The influence of freestream turbulence representative of the flow downstream of a modem gas turbine combustor and the first stage vane on turbine blade heat transfer has been measured and analytically modeled in a linear, transonic turbine cascade. Measurements were performed on a high turning, transonic turbine blade. The facility is capable of heated flow with inlet total temperature of 120 degrees C and inlet total pressure of 10 psig. The Reynolds number based on blade chord and exit conditions (5x10(exp 6)) and the inlet and exit Mach numbers (0.4 and 1.2, respectively) are representative of conditions in a modem gas turbine engine. High intensity, large length-scale freestream turbulence was generated using a passive turbulence-generating grid to simulate the turbulence generated in modem combustors after it has passed through the first stage vane row. The grid produced freestream turbulence with intensity of approximately 10-12% and an integral length scale of 2 cm near the entrance of the cascade passages, which is believed to be representative of the core flow entering a first stage gas turbine rotor blade row. Mean heat transfer results showed an increase in heat transfer coefficient of approximately 8% on the suction surface of the blade, with increases on the pressure surface on the order of two times higher than on the suction surface (approximately 17%). This corresponds to increases in blade surface temperature of 5- 10%, which can significantly reduce the life of a turbine blade. The heat transfer data were compared with correlations from published literature with good agreement.
