Download or read book The Home Office and the Dangerous Trades written by P.W.J. Bartrip and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first in-depth study of occupational health in nineteenth and early-twentieth century Britain. As such it is an important contribution to the burgeoning literature on the history of health in the workplace. It focuses on the first four diseases to receive bureaucratic and legislative recognition: lead, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning and anthrax. As such it traces the emergence of medical knowledge and growth in public concern about the impact of these diseases in several major industries including pottery manufacture, matchmaking, wool-sorting and the multifarious trades in which arsenic was used as a raw material. It considers the process of state intervention taking due account of the influence of government inspectors, ‘moral entrepreneurs’ and various interest groups.

Download or read book The Vital Century written by John Rule and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long neglected, the Eighteenth Century is now the focus for much of the most exciting work in history today. This new research has so altered and expanded our understanding of the Georgian economy that some historians now question the very idea of an `Industrial Revolution'. John Rule uses the latest scholarship for a comprehensive and magisterial review -- of population, output, agriculture, manufacture, labour, communications, towns, finance and domestic and overseas markets -- through which he reassesses the `vital century' in which the contours of the modern economy first emerge to view. An analytical survey which offers the first comprehensive economic history of the C.18th.
Book Synopsis Networks of Improvement by : Jon Mee
Download or read book Networks of Improvement written by Jon Mee and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, Jon Mee proposes a new literary-cultural history of the Industrial Revolution in Britain from the late-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries. Against the stubbornly persistent image of "dark satanic mills," in many ways so comforting to literary Romanticism, Jon Mee provides fresh, revisionary account of the Industrial Revolution as a story of unintended consequences. Reading a wide range of texts-economic, medical, and more conventionally "literary" ones-with a distinctive focus on their circulation through networks and institutions, Mee shows how a project of enlightened liberal reform, articulated in Britain's emerging manufacturing towns, led unexpectedly to coercive forms of machine productivity, a pattern that might be seen repeating in the digital technologies in our own time. Instead of treating the Industrial Revolution as Romanticism's "other," Mee shows how writing, practices, and institutions emanating from the industrial towns developed a new kind of knowledge economy, one where "literary" debates played a key role, especially through local literary and philosophical societies who were important transmission hubs for the circulation of knowledge. Mee provides a new perspective on the development of social relations across the period, challenging the idea that the Industrial Revolution as the result of some kind of prior, ideological intention. The book will interest literary scholars concerned with the relation of Romanticism to Britain's social and economic upheavals; social and economic historians studying the underpinnings of the Industrial Revolution; and cultural historians tracing the relation between social networks and political philosophy"--
Book Synopsis Murder, Magic, Madness by : Davies Owen
Download or read book Murder, Magic, Madness written by Davies Owen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1856 William Dove, a young tenant farmer, was tried and executed for the poisoning of his wife Harriet. The trial might have been a straightforward case of homicide, but because Dove became involved with Henry Harrison, a Leeds wizard, and demonstrated through his actions and words a strong belief in magic and the powers of the devil, considerable effort was made to establish whether these beliefs were symptomatic of insanity. It seems that Dove murdered his wife to hasten a prediction made by Harrison that he would remarry a more attractive and wealthy woman. Dove employed Harrison to perform various acts of magic, and also made his own written pact with the devil to improve his personal circumstances. The book will study Dove’s beliefs and Harrison’s activities within the rural and urban communities in which they lived, and examine how modern cultures attempted to explain this largely hidden mental world, which was so sensationally exposed. The Victorian period is often portrayed as an age of great social and educational progress. This book shows how beliefs dismissed by some Victorians as ‘medieval superstitions’ continued to influence the thoughts and actions of many people, viz most famously Conan `table tapper' Doyle.
