Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether implementing 15 minutes of daily, direct fluency instruction using poetry to model phrasing, rate and expression, with opportunities that allowed students practice for rereading would result in increased reading fluency rate. This research was conducted with twenty-three second-grade students during the first ten weeks of the school year. For this study, the researcher used a quantitative, preexperimental design. This method is known as a one-group pretest/posttest design. Results were measured using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Nonsense Word test. the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency probes and the Language Arts Primary Observation, and assessment used by the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Each fluency lesson was organized into four components: a focus on meaning, modeling, guided practice and in dependen practice. A variety of echo and choral reading activities helped students attain fluency with the passage alongside a fluent reader, which in this case was the researcher. The assisted reading activities took place multiple times throughout the week for reinforcement and practice. The data indicated an overall increase in reading fluency rate for the students involved n the study.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if using poetry as a repeated reading strategy would improve second graders' reading fluency scores. Fluency is defined as the ability to read accurately, quickly, and effortlessly with appropriate expression and meaning, is an important aspect of reading because it is the bridge between word recognition and comprehension. This study was concluded in a second grade classroom of 21 students in the fall of 2008. Selected students were chosen to practice and read aloud one poem a week for an eight-week study. Throughout the study, fluency data was collected by listening and timing individuals. Fluency was measured by pre and posttest, and teacher rubric. Results of the study showed a significant growth in fluency among all students involved in this study. While there may be other contributing factors, using poetry can help increase fluency scores.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if engaging low-achieving Second Grade students in 15 additional minutes of daily instruction using repeated reading of poetry would increase students' fluency and improve the number of words read per minute on district assessments. This study used a quasi-experimental pretest/posttest design with 1 treatment group and 1 comparison group. For a period of 7 weeks, the researcher implemented 1 poem per week with a small group of 6 Second Grade subjects during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. Subjects were chosen based on student scores on the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System. The Macmillan Second Grade Benchmark Assessment was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores and as a posttest to determine the outcome. An anecdotal journal was also used to monitor the progress of subjects during the research study. Explicit plans were developed and followed to maximum the educational potential of the poems read during the small group reading time of the treatment group. Results indicated an increase in the fluency test scores of the involved subjects. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of poetry as a focal point of instruction.

All second grade students at a suburban elementary school in the upper Midwest were benchmark assessed to evaluate their reading fluency ability. Based on the benchmark assessments, five students were selected to receive reading intervention using the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System. The study focused on the correlated daily book reads and poetry books and the effect they have on student fluency. Reading fluency data was collected on a weekly basis and comparisons from students' baseline scores was made to determine if fluency growth was occurring. The data was triangulated and compared to determine the growth students made. The research suggested that poetry reading daily did help students achieve greater gains in their reading fluency.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

The study took place in a third grade classroom involving seven students who scored below grade level independence in fluency. Students took part in weekly poetry activities to encourage and promote reading fluency. Students were also involved in poetry readings in front of a classroom and parent audience. Student progress was measured using three data tools. Baseline data were gathered through the use of running records. Parent opinions were collected through the use of a survey at the beginning and conclusion of the study. These data tools were all used to measure the effect repeated readings.and performance of poetry had on student fluency. All students involved in the study were fluent at grade level, or on track to be fluent at grade level, by the conclusion of the school year. Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using repeated reading of poetry as a strategy to increase third graders' reading fluency scores. This study utilized a quasi-experimental one group pretest/post test design. The researcher implemented one poem per week, for a nine-week period, with a group of six third grade students. The study was conducted during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. The Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores, as well as a post test for an indicator of progress. An anecdotal journal was used to document observations about student progress during the study. Six selected students received daily instruction on one poem per week. After being introduced to each poem. students were asked to practice reading the poem independently, with a partner and in a small group. On the last day of each week the researcher collected fluency data by timing and listening to each student. A comparison group of six different students with similar reading abilities were given the BRI pre/posttst. In comparing the performance data of the two groups, the treatment group showed a significant growth. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of simple poems as a strategy to increase fluency.

It enables teachers to go beyond the conventional "round-robin" approach by providing strong instructional support and using challenging texts. Grounded in research and classroom experience, the book explains what works and why in helping students build comprehension along with word recognition and the expressive elements of oral reading. Specific lesson plan ideas, helpful vignettes and examples, and reproducibles make this an indispensable classroom resource. Included are chapters on fluency's role in learning to read, motivation, the home-school connection, fluency assessment, and strategies for struggling readers.

Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of repeated readings in four second-grade classrooms in two urban elementary schools in Northwest Ohio. As determined by the Ohio Department of Education, 75% of the students in each building must score at or above the proficient level. For the 2008-2009 school year Building A, a school within one of Ohio"s urban settings, had a passage rate of 65.7% and Building-B, in the same district, had a lower passage rate of 58.1%. To evaluate the effectiveness of the 10-week repeated reading session of poetry and prose the following research questions were addressed: (a) What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on fluency (Words Correct Per Minute) over a 10-week intervention?(b) What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on fluency (prosody) over a 10-week intervention? (c)What is the effect of repeated readings of poetry versus repeated reading of narrative passages on reading comprehension over a 10-week intervention? (d)What is the effect of repeated reading of poetry on students' attitudes toward reading as compared to the repeated readings of narrative passages? Mixed methods design was selected for this study due to both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The quantitative data represents the scores on the pre- and post-tests of Words Correct Per Minute, retelling rubric, Elementary Reading Attitude Survey, and prosody rubric. The qualitative data within the study consisted of student questionnaires, student interviews, and teacher journals following the 10-week repeated readings project. Within this study, statistical significance was demonstrated in the areas of improvement in Words Correct Per Minute, phrasing, and smoothness, making repeated readings a viable addition to reading instruction. Additionally, the results suggested that attitudes toward reading for poetry were more positive than attitudes toward reading of narrative passage.

This research was conducted in a First Grade classroom with ten subjects. The treatment lasted for nine weeks with pretests and posttests administered the first and last weeks of the study. Data taken included nonsense word recognition, words per minute read, and anecdotal journals. At the beginning of each week, the five subjects in the treatment group conferenced with the teacher about a new poem. The subjects took home the poem and practiced it with an adult for four days. Subjects (or their guardians) documented the number of minutes read each night on verification sheets. Data were compiled, triangulated and analyzed to form conclusions. Results from this study showed an increase in reading fluency of both the treatment and comparison subjects during the nine week treatment period. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research project was to implement repeating readings and examine their effectiveness on the reading fluency of second grade students who have specific learning disabilities. For eight weeks, reapeating reading strategies were implemented for approximately 20 minutes, three days a week. This study took place during reading class with three second grade students. The students' growth was assessed using the Standard Oral Reading Fluency Assessment Passages from the Achievement Improved Monitoring System (AIMSWeb). The Oral Reading Fluency subtest from the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (3rd edition) and the Reading Fluency subtest from the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement Revised III were also administered. These assessments were given in the winter as a baseline and again in the spring to measure the students' reading fluency growth. Data was analyzed to measure the effectiveness of using the strategy of repeated readings to increase the reading fluency rate of students with reading disabilities.
