Book excerpt: This study presents the results related to the adsorption behavior of one cationic surface active agent at the silica-water interface and demonstrates the capabilities of the Total Internal Reflection (TIR) Raman sampling configuration to provide spectroscopic information on a molecular level and simultaneously serve as an experimental platform for studying thermodynamic and kinetic properties of molecules at the silica-water interface. This Raman spectroscopic technique takes advantage of an "evanescent electric field" that is generated at the silica-water interface in TIR mode with limited, TIR geometry specific, probing depth. A minor portion of the research work was related to the adsorption of low vapor pressure solvent molecules from the gas phase at the silica-gas interface, followed by studies at the silica-water interface that proved that neither short alkyl chain hydrophilic ionic liquids nor anionic surfactants adsorb in excess at the silica-water interface. The primary goal of this work was to study and identify the adsorption mechanisms of a cationic surfactant at the silica-water interface. Spectral analysis and the relevant Raman signal intensities as function of surfactant concentration and surface excess provided the input data for evaluating the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of benzyldimethylhexadecyl ammonium chloride. Adsorption isotherms were fitted according to the Langmuir model for the pure surfactant, and based on a modified Langmuir model for the surfactant with various concentrations of magnesium chloride, on bare and on hydrophobic silica. The results revealed enhancement of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of adsorption, as function of electrolyte concentration; the results from the 2nd part of the research work further emphasized the effects of a hydrophobic silica surface on surfactant adsorption behavior; the hydrophobic surface properties promoted different type of surfactant aggregation at the interface, with attenuation of the adsorption driving mechanisms, but with retention of the intrinsic surfactant properties found at the bare silica surface. Spectral analysis of the Raman scattering intensities as function of concentration and time indicated that no significant reorientation of surfactant molecules takes place at the silica-water interface and the most likely aggregate structure at the surface is spherical at the bare silica surface, and hemi-micellar or hemispherical at the modified hydrophobic silica surface. The study concludes that cationic surfactant adsorption mechanisms can be modulated by substrate properties, electrolyte type, and the concentration levels of both surfactant and electrolyte..

Book excerpt: "A study of the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and the dependency of the adsorption of divalent metal counterions such as copper and zinc at the air-water interface on its concentration in the solution, was undertaken in order to better understand the process of ion flotation. The study is divided into two broad categories, the first of which consists of the evaluation of the extent of aggregation of the surfactant molecules into micelles, and the effect of the divalent metal counterion concentration on this aggregation and on the critical concentration at which micelles start forming (cmc). This was accomplished using well established light scattering and surface tension techniques, which were also used in the investigation of the influence of surfactant concentration on the precipitation of lead dodecyl sulfate. The adsorption of divalent counterions at air-water interfaces comprised the second category of this research, and it was conducted using conventional equilibrium surface tension measurements and an established foaming technique. The following conclusions were drawn: 1) The adsorption of divalent metal counterions at air-water interfaces, and therefore, the flotation of these ions is largely independent of the type of divalent counterion. 2) Optimum flotation conditions for divalent counterions occur in surfactant solutions containing no micelles. Since the stability of the foam, a desirable feature in ion flotation, increases with the concentration of the surfactant, the best conditions for ion flotation occur at the cmc. 3) The competing adsorption of the divalent metal counterions at the micellar shear interface is primarily responsible for the decrease in the adsorption of these counterions at the air-water interface. 4) The competing adsorption of divalent lead counterions at the micellar shear interface is apparently responsible for the increase in the solubility of Pb(DS)2 in concentrated sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solutions. Book excerpt: A series of experiments were performed to study the sorption of humic acid and Eu3+ ion (at trace concentrations) on the minerals: montmorillonite, bentonite, diatomite and kaolinite in ternary systems. Humic acid and europium sorption were investigated as a function of humic acid concentration, ionic strength and pH. There was a strong uptake of humic acid on to the minerals with sorption increasing as humic acid concentration decreases. For montmorillonite, the uptake of discrete size fractions was also studied. It was found that the larger fractions were more strongly sorbing and were better able to retain Eu in solution. The ionic strength has an impact on Eu behaviour: in the absence of humic acid, sorption strength decreases, whilst in the presence of high concentrations of humic it increases. The sorption of Eu3+ increases from pH 2 to 5 in both the presence and absence of humic acid. Above pH 5, the Eu3+ showed different behaviour with and without humic acid, and as humic concentration became high (100 ppm), the Eu behaves in the same way as the humic. Bentonite is able to sorb humic acid and Eu3+ at any concentration expected in the environment, and shows the strongest sorption of any of the materials tested. Experiments confirmed that Eu is an excellent analogue for Am in these systems. The sorption of selected divalent and trivalent metal ions: Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Eu3+ and Cr3+ on montmorillonite has been investigated in the micro-molar concentration range. In all cases, sorption strength increased with pH, and was consistently stronger for the tri-valent ions. In the presence of humic acid, there was some evidence for the enhancement of sorption. Uptake of metal ions (Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Cr3+, Eu3+ and La3+) by natural and modified kaolinite was studied, and for all except Cr3+, it was found that kaolinite modified by manganese hydrothermal treatment gave the strongest sorption. A simple kinetic model was developed to simulate the experimental data for the sorption of humic acid and Eu3+ on the minerals. The model allows two humic binding sites on the mineral surface and two types of humic in solution, which can have different Eu3+ binding strengths. Metal ion surface complexation is modelled with a single kinetic equation. Ternary complexes are included in the model. The interaction of humic acid on the minerals can be fitted reasonably well. However, for the Eu3+ ion behaviour, although the model was able to give a reasonable fit to data for montmorillonite and bentonite, it could not reproduce the behaviour for kaolinite and diatomite.
