Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of text genre on French language reading comprehension at two levels of college French instruction. The subjects consisted of college students enrolled in the second quarter of elementary French (French 102.01) and the second quarter of intermediate French (French 104.01) of the college French program at The Ohio State University. Subjects were rated based on their level of academic performance in their respective levels of French study. All subjects read the same two passages from twentieth century French literature (excerpts from a play and a novel). Subjects wrote an L1 free-recall protocol upon relinquishing each passage. The 48 recall protocols were scored using Johnson's weighted prepositional analysis system (1970) and the scores were analyzed with the Analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedure with the following design variables (a) Text genre (Play, Novel), (b) Level of language instruction (French 102, French 104), (c) Teacher assigned rating of student academic performance (Excellent, Good, Poor). The two-way (ANOVA) mixed design revealed significant effect for text genre and level of class performance but no significant main effect for the level of instruction. The ANOVA did not indicate either first-order or second-order interaction. This finding has implications for further research as well as instructional use.

Book excerpt: A study investigated whether adult anglophone readers of French could be taught to use the organizational patterns (top-level structures, or TLSs) in expository text and whether they could then use this knowledge (the structure strategy) to facilitate reading comprehension as measured quantitatively through immediate free recall. Subjects were 43 university students of high intermediate level French proficiency divided into experimental (n=21) and control (n=22) groups. The experimental group received training in the use of five TLSs: description; sequence; causation; problem solution; and comparison. Training concentrated on use of the TLSs and their corresponding signal words as strategy for promoting recall. All subjects were pre- and posttested for reading comprehension and recall. Subjects also completed rating scales to estimate text difficulty, memorability, affect, interest, background knowledge, clarity of argument, organization, recommendations, content, and discussion of content. Results indicate that: text topic was a significant factor in recall, suggesting that effects of training in structure strategy cannot be predicted across topics; more proficient readers appeared to have the structure strategy already, and those trained in it had improved recall; structure strategy is teachable; reading time was not significantly related to recall; and longer passages seemed to offer no disadvantages. However, students often struggle when conducting essential tasks, such as making complex inferences, examining arguments, or vetting sources, during the process of comprehending complex, content-rich texts (e.g., expository texts). Text-based discussions have been shown by prior research to effectively promote students basic and high-level comprehension as well as critical-analytic thinking about and around text. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the effects of text genre, knowledge, and interest on students high-level comprehension as mediated by text-based discussions. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation study was to investigate the effects of text and learner characteristics on students acquisition of high-level comprehension. Specifically, the present study controlled for text topic and examined the degree to which text genre, topic knowledge, and perceived interestingness influenced students achievement in reading comprehension as evidenced by discourse elements during small-group text-based discussions as well as post-discussion comprehension measures. Two fourth-grade teachers and their 28 students from a private elementary school in the northeastern United Stated consented to participate in the study. The current study employed a single group, repeated measures design in which students read three texts and conducted QT discussions on the text every other week for six weeks in total. The three texts were written in different genres (i.e., expository, narrative, and mixed) on the same topic. Data concerning student discourse, post-discussion reading assessments, as well as measures of topic knowledge and perceived interestingness were collected at three time points. Piecewise multilevel modeling was employed to analyze changes in students discourse and reading performance due to text genre by incorporating variables at different levels. Regarding the effect of text genre on students acquisition of high-level comprehension, the results suggested that a) students performed best with narrative text regarding high-level comprehension, especially the co-construction of exploratory talk; b) students performed better with mixed genre text than with expository text regarding high-level comprehension, especially the generation of elaborated explanations; c) the number of authentic questions raised by students during discussions did not differ statistically significantly by text genre; d) students scored statistically significantly higher on the post-discussion reading comprehension measures with narrative and mixed texts, compared to the expository text. Moreover, pertaining to the effects of prior knowledge and perceived interestingness of students acquisition of high-level comprehension, the results indicated that a) students personal connection to the text was a positive predictor of their production of elaborated explanations during discussions; b) students personal connection to the text was a negative predictor of their participation in exploratory talk; and c) topic knowledge scores positively predicted students post-discussion comprehension scores. Several auxiliary findings were also addressed.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated text reconstruction performance of EFL university-level students reading a fairly long naturally-occurring popular magazine article taking two factors into consideration: degree of text content explicitness and EFL reading ability level. More specifically, it attempted to examine a deeper level of text representation, or what Kintsch and his associates label the situation model (Kintsch & van Dijk, 1978; van Dijk & Kintsch, 1983; Kintsch, 1974, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998), by subjects of two reading ability levels in EFL [high and low]. Subjects performed an immediate written reconstructive recall after reading one of the two versions [fully explicit and less explicit] of a popular science article. This recall or text representation reflected (1) the comprehension or the reconstruction of the text as a whole, (2) the distribution of information in the text, i.e., in terms of its macro and microstructure, and (3) any correct inferences that may have been generated. In addition, the study considered the influence of text difficulty, topic interest, and topic familiarity in the reconstructive representation. Ninety-two Brazilian university-level subjects participated in this study.Comprehension was measured quantitatively in terms of (1) the number of propositions recalled from reading one of the two versions, in terms of (2) textbase recall, and (3)inferential recall. In both cases, six hierarchical levels of information were considered for the two text versions. The findings of the present study indicated (1) that text version had an impact on the reconstructive process. Readers benefited from reading a less explicit version of the text regardless of their reading ability level, although high reading ability level readers outperformed low reading ability ones; (2) that the fully explicit version had an advantage over the less explicit version only with respect to the construction of thetextbase respresentation; (3) respect for the Hierarchy Principle, that is, higher-level propositions were better and more frequently recalled than lower-level ones; (4) that textdifficulty and topic familiarity were not determining factors in the reconstructive representation. Topic interest, however, was shown to be a significant factor in the construction of the textbase as well as in the reconstructive process as a whole of low reading ability subjects. These findings are consistent with those reported in earlier cognitive research in the area of text representation.

Book excerpt: My intention is to further validate and extend the application of knowledge structure (KS) analysis methods beyond monolingual into bilingual reading settings. This investigation applies KS analysis methods to describe the influence of narrative and expository lesson texts on bilingual readers KS. Monolingual native language (L1) reading studies have established that text type, or genre, strongly influences reading comprehension, and narrative texts are easier to recall and understand than expository texts, indicating that the comprehensibility of the content may differ depending on the genre in which it is presented. Thus, it is important to understand reading comprehension differences that are triggered by different text genres. However, the effects of text genres on reading comprehension have rarely been the focus of target language (L2) reading research, where the few L2 studies have reached different conclusions about their relative difficulty. In addition, I consider the interaction of prior knowledge and text genres in L2 reading contexts. The inconclusive and few reported findings in an L2 reading context may largely be due to methodological difficulty because L2 reading is an extraordinarily complex process dependent upon reader-related and text-related factors that are far more varied than those implicated in L1 reading. For this methodological problem, this investigation proposes a KS analysis model to better understand the interactions between pre-reading KS and text genre and between text genre and post-reading KS. An additional aim of this study is to assess how language proficiency modulates the interactions. For that, university mixed proficiency Korean English language learners (n = 616) were randomly assigned to one of 8 conditions that all involved a pre-reading task in L1 or L2 (as a sorting task), reading a text, then from memory a post-reading task in L1 or L2 (as a summary writing), and finally a comprehension posttest (e.g., sort Korean or English, read English expository or narrative text, write Korean or English, posttest). All of the participants sorting and essay artifacts were converted into Pathfinder Networks (PFnets) that were visually and statistically compared with each lesson texts PFnet they read. For the PFnet analysis, this investigation employed two distinctly different graph theoretic metrics, Similarity of PFnet and Centrality of PFnet, in order to analyze the PFnets statistically and to visually describe the interactions between text genre and pre- and post-reading KS by proficiency level. The results from the similarity and centrality of PFnets showed that the low proficiency participants comprehension of the same text content was greater in the L1 task language and in the narrative text, while the high proficiency participants comprehension did not differ as functions of task language and text genre. With respect to prior knowledge interaction, both low and high proficiency participants maintained their pre-reading KS more for the expository text than the narrative text. These findings from the current study can have practical implications for their L2 reading instruction. Narrative texts would be more beneficial to L2 readers who do have lower L2 proficiency because of its superior comprehensibility, while expository texts would be more beneficial to L2 readers who have enough prior knowledge of to-be-learned content because of its tendency to integrate content with prior knowledge.

The expository text used in this study was entitled Friendship, a suggested reading for intermediate students. The text was 490 words long, with average sentence length of 12,8, had a Flesch Reading Ease value of 77.5, and a computed Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 6.1. Most of the pupils attained a rating of developing for the content (40.57%), structure (61.71%), and vocabulary (46.86%) of their retelling. A small percentage of the respondents attained an exceptional rating on content (13.14%), structure (4.57%), and vocabulary (0.57%). Majority of the pupils (47.43%) were classified as approaching proficiency (80-84) in terms of their Grade 6 English subject grade. Only 1.71% of the pupils belonged to the advanced category. The reading comprehension of the pupils in expository texts has a significant relationship with their grades in their English subject. This means that their reading comprehension in expository text influences their performance in their English subject class. Results revealed that pupils had difficulty in comprehending expository texts as revealed by their low rating in the content, structure and vocabulary of their retelling. Further, the academic performance of the pupils in their English subject is affected by their reading comprehension.
